Broken Age is a beautiful game. Sometimes you just want to enjoy a piece of art. I'm not going to open up the "Are Games Art?" can of worms argument, but I can say without a doubt that THIS GAME is a brilliant work of art.
Everyone knows the story of this game, but here's a quick recap if you aren't a part of "everyone": Tim Schafer and Doublefine started a Kickstarter asking for $300,000 to make an adventure game. The project exploded and they received over $3.3 Million. The game took a lot longer to make than anticipated, partially because they decided to make a much bigger game than they had originally planned now that they had way more funds than they thought they would. Instead of a delivery date of October 2012, the first half of Broken Age was available for backers to play in January of 2014, with the second half arriving in April of the same year. Along with the game, backers were given access to an episodic documentary of the making of the project. Now that that's all out of the way, let's talk about the game.

One of the biggest reasons I got into role playing games on PC is because of how open they were. Many of them are so open, that you might never get around to playing the entirety of the main story. Having these games really come of age in the third dimension was one of the best things about having a decent PC in the early-mid 2000s. Now I can't help but feel they've stagnated nearly to the point of being the opposite of fun and rewarding. I believe one of the biggest reasons for this is the industry's total shift to fully-voiced scripts, especially in the AAA development scene. This staunches writing freedom and limits player options--effects that game designers should be against! I can only hope this is a AAA trend that dies out, and seeing all these conflicting opinions could lead to Fallout 4 being the landmark title that starts the reversal of this trend.

What if I told you this was a meme about New Years Resolutions? I need to start my article with a bit of a confession: I'm not a "New Year's Resolutions" kind of guy. I tend to think such things are empty promises people make to themselves without any real intent to follow through, so I generally don't make them myself. I understand why people do so, because they want to make some kind of perceived positive change in their life, and that gives them a goal to strive for. But, without a carefully laid out plan, a well conceived idea, or something/someone to keep one motivated, it can be hard to stick with such things beyond the end of January. Be that as it may, I don't begrudge those who resolve to better themselves. Indeed, we should all aim for such a thing.
Now that I've said that, I'm going to turn the tables and say that I'm making some changes this year, and I hope to stick with them as much as I can. Call them "resolutions" if you wish, but for me, I just need to do some things differently this year. I need to deepen my relationship with my wife, and my God. I need to commit more to my church. I need to lose some weight - a goal which, as I write this, comes after my first workout of the year (go me!). And as for my gaming, there are a number of things I want to do differently. Here's a short list of things that I want to accomplish this year, from a gaming perspective.

We all have our spot to game. This year I'm going to be building out a place to call home. I'm taking inspiration from Slackur's game room to create a space that promotes parallel play. I want people who visit to be able to pick up and play a game and not feel tied down to a particular spot or system. To accomplish this I split my game room in to four areas:
1. Modern - Sit down on the futon and play some PS3, 360, Wii or X1. 2. Retro corner with Sony TV - Pull up a chair and play some classic games 3. Retro cart with Magnavox TV - Pull up a chair and play some 2600 or Intellivision 4. Bar - Sit down and play some Galaga or play a board game
I'm working on adding some custom shelving, another retro console cabinet, decorations (making it look less brown), and more places to play this year.
Suggestions are welcome and pictures below:
TV Cart (for RF only systems):

Being in a relatively small town and this being our first event, we decided that it would be best to make sure the operating costs were as low as possible so that our goals would be very obtainable. We wanted nothing more than to have a fun event that could be considered a success so that we could make it an annual event. With that in mind, we wanted to have at least 100 people attend the event at some point during the day and raise at least $2000 for the Child Development Center.
Long story short we exceed both of our goals. But you want the long story so click the link below........

I am on record as proclaiming that Sin & Punishment: Star Successor on the Nintendo Wii to be an "objectively perfect" video game. The excitement and wonder of that game, as well as the motion and scale of the scenery, left me floored after playing it. I thought it would be a long time, if ever, before I found a game that combined the thrilling gameplay, amazing atmosphere, and grand scale of S&P in the same perfect mixture. I haven't had to search long, as I have just finished my first playthrough of Panzer Dragoon Orta for the original XBox.

To everyone who was expecting the conclusion to my 5th Christmas Story today, it will NOT be ready today, as I initially planned. The holidays have taken a big toll on me this year, and it's effecting my judgement and writing, so it will not be finished today, but fear not, for it WILL be finished. Probably tomorrow, the 25th, or the 26th. I apollogize for the delay, but I've also got a massive headache, and I just cannot type it up today. Please bear with me, I WILL write it soon. Thank you.
Ladies and Gentlemen, live from somewhere in Virginia, it's a Christmas Story 5!
Starring:
ReddMcKnight, with bickman2k, izret101, Slackur, Zagnorch, ShadowKisuragi, and Nupoile!
And now, heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Redd!
Before I begin, I'd just like to thank everyone here for being so nice to me over the years. It's been quite a thrill being here. I've had my share of rough times, as we all have, and the good people here at RFGeneration have supported me through it when I asked for help, and I really do appreciate it so much. Here's to many more years! Now, enough with my sentimental stuff, let's get on with the story!
Redd: Merry Christmas, one and all!
Izret: What's there to be merry about?
Zagnorch: Yeah! I haven't played a decent game in weeks!
Redd: Ummmm...Well, I just got a new Computer, and I have a Steam Library full of games. We could go play those.
Izret: (Sighs) Fine. Better than nothing.
(Our intrepid heroes make they're way to Redd's House)
Bickman: Good lord, Redd, this place is a mess!
Slackur: Mother nature died in here!
Redd: Shut up!
Nupoile: Eh. I've seen worse.
ShadowKisuragi (Shadow): Your kidding me, right?
Redd: Look, just bear with me while I boot this thing up. (Turns on Computer)
Nupoile: What kind of hardware does it boast?
Redd: 4GHz CPU, 16GB of RAM, and an nVidia 900-Series Video Card.
Nupoile: ......Mine's still better.
Bickman: Wah wah wah.
Redd: ............Right, anyway...Check out this ga--Huh? What's this? (Points to a game title)
Zagnorch: "Enter.EXE?"
Slackur: What is that?
Redd: I have no idea. I didn't add any such command to this thing.
Izret: Cool, let's click it! (Shoves Redd out of the way and clicks it)
Shadow: You moron! We have no idea what that does!
(Monitor starts flashing)
Izret: Whoa! Seizure-riffic!
Bickman: This can't be good...
(A flash of light bursts from the monitor, and upon disappearing, our heroes find themselves in a different area)
Nupoile: What the...?
Redd: Where are we?! What did you do, Izret?!
Izret: All I did was click that thing!
Bickman: Yeah, and now we appear to be in...Wait a minute...is this Hell?
Zagnorch: What are you talking about?
Bickman: Well, look. We all have guns now, and there's one of those brown creatures from Doom.
Slackur: What the?! Kill it with fire! (Blasts the creature) Hey, that was kind of fun!
Shadow: Is this REALLY happening?
Izret: This is awesome!
Redd: This is insane! We could all die here!
Bickman: I did NOT want to spend my Christmas in Hell!
Zagnorch: Shut up, you wussies! I bet the only way out is to beat the boss at the end of this level! (Loads Shotgun) Let's kick some ass!
Nupoile: We are SO dead.
Slackur: Yep.
Our Heroes seem to be in some real trouble this time! Can they possibly escape the world of Doom and get back home in time for some Holiday Eggnog?! Tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion!
DISCLAIMER: Is a disclaimer really needed this time? There is no way the events in this story could EVER happen.

We all have Christmas gaming stories. Many have two or three, some maybe more. Me, I have several, but the one that's been rolling around my noodle as of late happened back in good old 2001. Remember it? How about you and me sit for a bit, and we can exchange Christmas gaming stories, okay? Great.

And subjective numbers attached to opinions. Fun to read and argue over, sure. But here at RFGeneration, we're cooler than that. (And more humble!) So here I'm gonna list some games that aren't necessarily GOTY-type stuff (though some are, certainly.) But if you're like me, then I'm glad my beloved wife met me first, and also you like to dig through articles to find random gems you weren't aware of or some thoughts on a game that may make you give it a chance instead of otherwise dismissing it. So here goes, a slackur's suggestions from the last year of gaming good times.

For one, I don't own a current generation console to play games released this year on, and secondly, my list of my favorite games I played it 2015 will be available early next year when you listen to the RF Generation Playcast (http://rfgenplaycast.podbean.com/) .....shameless plug!! Instead, I'll be focusing on a topic that has baffled and frustrated me (and probably you) for years and that is, "What import games can I play on my North American consoles without having to import systems?" I certainly won't be able to cover every system, but I'll try to cover the more well-known and most-owned consoles. I understand that some imported games can be burned or pirated for play on North American systems; however, since this method is frowned upon by a large majority of the community, I will not be covering or suggesting this method for any system here. I hope many of you will find this article useful and please think of it and my research as my holiday gift to you!
**DISCLAIMER: Please be advised that I have not tried several of these methods myself and that the great majority of the information that I have assembled here has been compiled through research. I have verified as much of the information as possible, but some of it may be incorrect. If you find that something is incorrect, please send me a PM and I can verify and edit this post. Thank you!**

Another year ends, and another Top 10 lists needs to be assembled. I have to admit that this was kind of a weird year for me as far as new games went. There were actually a lot of unexpected disappointments really. I loved Wolfenstein: The New Order last year, but couldn't enjoy The Old Blood this year. I loved Shovel Knight last year, but the Plague expansion did nothing for me. Ori and the Blind Forest and Mortal Kombat X come to mind as well as let-downs. I also played a lot of indie games that just didn't leave a lasting impression.
The other weird thing is that this was a huge year for independent Dreamcast releases and a bunch of them were released in the latter part of the year. While many of these are either on their way to me now or still on my want-list, I unfortunately didn't get to play all of them. So for all I know, this list could have or would have changed by the time the year officially rolls to an end. I guess you could say that about any list of favorites: it's always going to be in-flux. But as of right now, at this very moment, as the words pour out from my fingers, these were my favorite games of the year. The top half feels really solid to me - the best of the best, but strangely, the lower half feels like games that were 'just good enough' to make it onto the list.

When was the last time you had an impulse purchase completely surprise you? Our game today is one of those for me. Fairy Fencer F is a turn-based RPG developed for Sony's Playstation 3 and Microsoft Windows. I initially had some doubts, since I saw the game was developed by many of the same companies behind the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. To be fair, I've only played the first Neptunia game, and it was a real chore. You can check out my review of that game here: http://www.rfgeneration.c...mension-Neptunia-2957.php.
Once I started playing Fairy Fencer F, I noticed that some monster designs looked different from what I saw in Neptunia, but many looked quite familiar. In addition to Idea Factory's character designer, Tsunako, they managed to add an extremely familiar name to character design for classic RPG fans, Yoshitaka Amano. I'm sure he was brought in for the male characters and monsters, since the two leading ladies look like Neptunia rejects. Meanwhile, Fang looks like Squall and Sora's love child. He's not the only one who was added to Idea Factory's staff for this project, and he's not the only one from the series we all know him for. The original Final Fantasy composer also joined the team. That's right, Nobuo Uematsu composed some songs and had his band, the Earthbound Papas, record them and a few others for the soundtrack. Most of the music was done by the existing in house musicians, but its all good to listen to and fits with the game and characters quite well.
