I doubt any of you care, but on October 19th, Elliott Smith's last (unfinished) album will be released.  Originally set to be a two-disc set with 34 songs, his suicide ended up changing that to a single disc with only 15 songs.  Two have been released by the label or family or somebody for free and can be found here:

An article (though not a very good one) can be found here:

If you like Smith's stuff, this album looks to also be of five star calibur.  The two songs that are out are kind of in between his new and old stuff.  I've never bought music on its day of release, but I'll sure as hell be getting this one as soon as it is available.

A little birdie sang the entire album to me last night at about 2 AM, and it's absolutely brilliant.  It's a different Elliott Smith than was on his first three albums, or even his fourth and fifth.  The fact that this album is so good only makes the guy's death at a young age even suckier.  No other musician out there even compares.

He stabbed himself in the heart with a jagged piece of metal. He's another one of those musicians who completely sucked, but then killed himself in such a ridiculously kickass way that it elevated him to totally awesome status.

I hate it when you do that.  The first (and only) time you heard him, you liked it.  Why the hell are you saying he "completely sucked" now?

That's pretty ignorant considering you have no fucking clue what his life was like or what was going through his head.

Yeah, I read that.  That's what I was responding to.  It's incredibly ignorant.

Alright before this topic turns into a fistfight (|D).....

I've never heard of him.  What kind of music did he make?

Singer-songwriter.  If you're familiar with Nick Drake at all, that'd give you a pretty good idea of what his stuff sounds like.  Smith came 25 years later, of course, so it's different, but they both fall into the same niche of singer-songwriter.
