I consider myself a fair, upstanding, and generous person (*cough*) and I like that some people have that opinion of me. Collecting is an exciting hobby in that many of us see ourselves as Indiana Jones-like explorers who scavenge local garage sales, thrift stores, and "antique" stores in an attempt to upturn games and consoles at great prices and add them to our personal museums. Oftentimes, when we find duplicates or valuable items for games/systems we don't collect, we may turn these over to game stores, sell them on auction sites, or sell/trade them with friends to reinvest in our collections. Of all of these interactions, dealing with friends and people you are in contact with on a regular basis is the most personal, and can sometimes result in awkward or less than favorable interactions. I was recently involved in one of these "transactions" and this is my story. Ladies and gentlemen: "The story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."

Well, we are now 2/3 of the way through the month, and are getting even closer to reaching our goal of $1000. Total Overdose: A Gunslinger's Tale in Mexico was released in 2005. It is an open world, third-person action game with driving and shooting. A lot of people refer to this game as a Grand Theft Auto clone, but honestly, I think that's being generous. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was released almost a full year before this game, and Total Overdose can't even hold a candle to Grand Theft Auto III. It is an example of a game that attempts to expand on an established formula, but falls short.

The Command & Conquer series stands as an early pioneer in the RTS (real time strategy) genre and one of the most identifiable and iconic game series today. Ask any PC gamer and they will likely first tell you which branch is their favorite (the main series, Red Alert, Generals, etc.) and then regale you with a tale of one of their most memorable moments. For many (including this author), it has to do with the power and charisma of the Commando unit. While most single "grunt" type units died a quick and often pointless death, the Commando would wade into battle, single-shot killing enemies and blowing up enemy structures with ease. Because of this, the Commando missions in the first Command & Conquer title were always my favorites, and often over far too soon. Then one day a Westwood employee spoke up at a meeting:
"What if you could be the Commando, but like in Quake? You know, get right down into the action and see things from his perspective. Right?"
Right indeed.

Being a little kid means having lots of free time and an unrealistic understanding of how the world works. Especially when it comes to money, economics, and practicality.
Since I was a little kid, I had an ambitious goal.
Not pictured; me or my panicked mom. Pic from timpickens.com And once I realized how terrible an idea it was to attach rocket boosters to my bicycle, I got another bicycle and a new goal; the ability to play any video game my nerdy heart desired, be it an arcade machine, home console game, or PC title.
Fast-forward many decades and hoping my back doesn't go out due to whiplash, and I still can't shake that little-kid voice. Especially after sharing so many games with so many people over the years. If I see a game for a few bucks that we don't own, my natural inclination is to pick it up for our collection or run through a list of folks I think may appreciate it.

Some of you might be wondering, "Why should you donate to RF Generation?" Our kind and hard working Technical Director, bickman2k dug up this classic, New Year's post from our Site Director, NES_Rules, detailing some site goals he wanted to hit back in 2010: http://www.rfgeneration.c...ts-2009-1258.php#comments. These goals included:
50,000 total games; 4,000 total hardware entries; 60,000 scans; and 30,000 screenshots.
Compare these goals to our current site numbers after 2015. Just look at how we've grown in 5 years since those goals were set! Today our database houses:
Over 103,000 total games; Over 7,500 total hardware entries; Over 130,000 scans; and Over 67,000 screenshots.
These numbers speak volumes about our site members and the hard work and dedication they put into our database (not to mention our staff who looks over and approves each submission). And don't forget, our site is and has always been ad-free and is run solely on the donations from our members. Also, if you haven't checked out our mobile app for Andriod, get on that! There is no better way to track your collection while searching for games out in the wild or while at a convention. I've heard great reports on Twitter from people at MagFest who are using it.
The staff at RF Generation would like to take a moment to thank those who have donated so far:
Cobra erikeskapade Fleach kam1kaz3nl77 Techie413 Voodoo Monkey and a donor whose user name has yet to be determined
Thank you all! Please remember to PM me the email address you donated with, so that we can properly thank you during our weekly updates and provide you with the proper number of raffle tickets. If you donated recently and do not see your name, you may have donated after we pulled numbers. If you don't see it, just send me a PM and I will check on your donation status.

There are plenty of great games in your collection right now (or in GameStop's bargain bin) that will show your loved one just how much they mean to you on this special day.
Some of these games are a bit long so you won't be able to finish all of them on Valentine's Day.
WARNING: Minor spoilers will be briefly discussed for some of the games on this list

Image shamelessly linked from GameFAQS. I'm not seeing much that screams "castle" here, save for the faux family crest with carrots on it. And never once does Yosemite Sam fire a gun in the game. Not once. False advertising, or just paying homage to a lovable, idiosyncratic cartoon character from a bygone era? You decide. Licensed properties can be a tricky beast. If you pay for licensing rights to a property, chances are, you're not going to have exclusive rights to that property, or your rights won't cross all borders. Your licensing rights will expire at some point, and you'll have to weigh the pros and cons of paying to continue those rights, or let them lapse. Sometimes, the window of opportunity for a licensed property is relatively small, and you are forced to come up with a product based upon that property in a rather short time frame. Sometimes, the results can be less than stellar. Such is the case with Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle.

The submissions for last month included 4,192 game submissions and 401 hardware submissions. Once again, we had another outstanding effort from our international members and it's nice to see the database not only growing in the number of items it houses, but also in its diversity. Thanks to all of you for putting forth such a wonderful effort to make the site an even more valuable tool for collectors.
Before I announce the top submitters and approvers for January, I'd like to take a minute to thank the Cartridge Club for participating in a banner swap with our site. If you are unfamiliar with their site, please give them a visit and enjoy the multitude of fantastic vlogs, reviews, podcasts, forums, and blogs that their members have created. Hopefully, this swap will help in directing members to our site and I'd like to welcome several of their site members who have recently joined and are enjoying our database tools and phone app. Thank you!

So you own and/or work at a game store. Pretty awesome, right? You get to constantly be around the things that you love.....but do you actually get to enjoy them??
For the past 2 and half years, I've been running and working at Game Quest as well as a second full-time job doing night shifts. I knew it was going to be busy and cut down significantly on one of my favorite things, my gaming time. Our city had long been in need of a good gaming store, so I felt it would be worth the temporary (hopefully) cut in my free time. The plan was, and still is, to get the store to a point where it doesn't neccessarily need me around to operate so that I can continue to do the things I enjoy and still offer my city a place to sell, buy, and play games of all types.
