Join RFGeneration Playcast hosts, Rich (singlebanana), Floyd (Fleach), Shawn (GrayGhost81), and Steven (Disposed Hero) as we discuss August's retro and modern playthroughs.  On the retro side, Rich and Floyd discuss their treacherous jaunt through Slumberland and Nightmare Land during the Little Nemo: The Dream Master segment. They are joined by RF Generation's own crafty gamer and host of the Retro Games Plus Podcast, Mr. Russ Lyman (russlyman). For the modern segment, Shawn and Steven discuss the action-packed and heavily decision-driven 3rd person shooter, Spec Ops: The Line. The end of summer is upon us and the temperature will soon be beginning to cool down. However, this latter part of the summer has been a real heat wave in terms of submissions, in fact, they've been better than ever!  If July was a "scorcher," then August might be deemed "molten lava hot." During last month, we increased our impressive July effort of 5,272 submissions, to 5,867!!! That is an incredible feat and we appreciate all of you who contributed to this effort.  The submissions for August included 5,784 game submissions (4,035 of which were images) and 83 hardware submissions. Top contributors for the month of August include:

Our top submitters (those with a minimum of 100) for August were:
FatherJack             4,439   (Holy Schnike!)
Schlibby                  469
Sauza12                  160
Raido                       103

Another amazing month guys!!!

Top approvers for the month included:
Tynstar                    4,067
Shadow Kisuragi    609

Our members from "across the pond" had another very impressive month. Amazing work, please keep those submissions coming! Thanks to everyone who submitted or approved submissions this month. We wouldn't have such a wonderful site without your efforts.

I know that some of you are probably disappointed that this isn't a glowing review of Crackdown on the XBox 360. I'm sure that's a great game, but having never played it, I'd like to talk about another game of the same name released on the Sega Mega Drive & Genesis by Sage's Creation in 1990 & 1991 respectively.  Crack Down is a port of the original 1989 arcade title of the same name that was developed by Sega for their Sega System 24 arcade board. The game was also ported to the Commodore Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, ZX Spectrum, the Wii Virtual Console (PAL & Japan only), and most recently (2010), the Genesis/Mega Drive version was made available on Steam.

After a great showing at our local fan convention and nearly two years in our tiny downtown location, we were starting to feel more cramped than ever in our store. It had felt small very early on, but it was just getting worse and worse as we had more customers and product coming in. Especially, since we wanted to add tabletop games in a significant way and didn't have the space to do it properly. It was feeling more and more like it was time to start shopping around for a new home for Game Quest!

If you are familiar with the series and/or love platformers than this is probably not the game for you...

Image quality may reflect my over all opinion...

Giana Sisters: Dream Runners is essentially a racing platformer with power ups. You and up to three friends* (or bots) can race on nine different stages and have access to nine different power ups. Along the way, you have to dodge traps, a handful of enemies and the attacks from the other racers.

(*I specify friends because the online community appears to be completely dead already, on the XBox One at least, despite having released only a few weeks ago.)

Flying lizards, giant bugs, robots, and dragons as
enemies? Count me in! Wait, what's with the nails?

The mid-late 1980's, and early 1990's were a magical time.  Forget Iran-Contra, forget Black Friday, forget the rampant materialism of the Baby Boomer generation, forget "yuppies", and forget the Gulf War.  During that period of time, we had Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Karate Kid, G.I. Joe and Transformers, Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!, and so much more.  And we had video games.  If you're reading this, you're likely either from my generation, and have fond memories of the 80's and early 90's, or you're experiencing them for the first time, something I often wish I could do, as I approach 40 years of age.  For those in the latter camp, I envy you.

Early in tri-Crescendo's existence, the company looked to expand its portfolio beyond audio work for tri-Ace games. These plans included Sakuraba being the main composer. The company struck a deal with another young development house called Monolith Soft, and the two worked to co-develop Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean for Nintendo's Gamecube in 2003. A prequel followed, Baten Kaitos Origins, in 2006. Eternal Sonata came the following year for the Xbox 360, and also to Playstation 3 a year later. tri-Ace also developed and released an all new game, Infinite Undiscovery for Xbox 360.

Everyone has something to hide. Sometimes it is just more obvious than others...
Enter Octodad!

Octodad is pretty straight forward game. You are a husband/father who goes about his day completing tasks like any other husband/father would. Such activities include grilling, grocery shopping, taking care of yard work, and spending time with your kids. These simple tasks turn into a comedic struggle when you have no bones.... For example, imagine flailing about the house and sloshing milk everywhere while pouring your daughter a glass.

The hook brings you ba-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

One of the things I love most about RF Generation is the great diversity of members that I get to converse with on our forums.  Our members vary in gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, social beliefs, and especially in their game system/developer preference.  Even so, our community has always been the kind where difference of opinion is accepted and embraced, and is even used as a means for looking at video gaming in general in a different light.  As an older member of the site, I've always felt right at home reminiscing about classics with the rest of the "geezers" (like Duke, who is much older than me) and having great conversations with younger members regarding their gaming history.  Though many of us differ in age, there is one thing that many of us have in common.......kids.

At this point in my life, I have two young kids, ages four (a boy) and seven (a girl). Like some of you, I've always had this dream of sharing my collection with my kids and playing alongside them through the same games I grew up on.  Though some of you may not be at this point in your lives yet, but may be considering having kids, you've probably at least had the same thought at some point.  I'm by no means the perfect parent, and when it comes to getting my kids involved in gaming, I've had my share of failures and successes.  However, my kids have really gotten into gaming recently and are begging me every night to go up to the gameroom.  Honestly, it's f@*king awesome!  So, in the course of coming up with an article for the front page, I decided that reflecting on what methods in getting my kids interested in gaming worked for me, as well as what I could have done better to peak their interest, might be a good topic. Below are a few observations that may be helpful if you want to get your kids to enjoy gaming:

Almost everyone likes platformers.  I literally walked around my work and asked a bunch of my fellow employees if they liked platforming games, and those that did not react with a blank stare gave a, "Yes," "Oh, yeah," or "Yep."  One guy also liked them, but only after I described what a platformer was.  He then proceeded to regal me with tales of his Atari 800XL, which he drags out of storage every few years to play Frogger and Jumpman with his wife.  Everyone else I spoke to talked about Super Mario Brothers, Sonic, and even the platforming sections of Contra.

This article isn't about any of those games.

So THIS is how you capture a bunch of gamers in a giant net.  Photo from the official CCAG Facebook page.

If there is anything that annually rejuvenates my enjoyment of video games beyond our little basement 'o fun, it's Cleveland's own 'Classic Console and Arcade Game Show'.  Sure, CORGS (a similar event in Columbus, Ohio) is awesome in its own right, but my beloved and I have been CCAGing for almost a decade, and there's still a sort of homegrown friendliness to the show that just resonates with us.  Maybe it's the vendors, many of whom immediately recognize us every year with a happy wave and plenty of stories to exchange.  Or the atmosphere, which is more laid back, friendly, and trusting than most larger conventions.  Perhaps its the incredible deals, such as the CIB Aquarius (practically sealed) a friend picked up for $25, or the complete Wii system with Motion Plus that another friend nabbed for $11.  It could also be the fascinating creativity some folks display, be it mods, custom arcade cabs, or handmade gaming items.

ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

**Before, we get too far into our game announcement, the RF Generation Playcast has some other exciting news for our loyal listeners. Around the middle of September, we will be moving our hosting services from Podomatic to PodBean. With Podomatic's service, we have always been confined to a specific storage and bandwidth limitation. Once we neared our storage capacity, we had to start deleting old episodes every month, which also removed them from iTunes and Stitcher. For a lower cost, PodBean allows us to house all of our episodes and maintain full download capabilities from their site, as well as our RSS feed affiliates (iTunes & Stitcher). Once we compared our options, the move was kind of no-brainer.  We have already uploaded all of our episodes to PodBean and created a working homepage at http://rfgenplaycast.podbean.com/, so please go ahead and check it out!

If you subscribe to use on Podomatic, iTunes, or Stitcher, please note that our next episode (which will be released at the beginning of September) will be our last episode released on Podomatic. You will need to resubscribe once we change our RSS feed. This will occur toward the middle of September and we will be sure to notify you on the RF Generation forums and homepage. Thanks for listening, and we hope that this move will only enhance your listening experience.**

AND NOW BACK TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAM....

With the month of August nearly half over, we continue to struggle through the rugged platforming of Little Nemo: The Dream Master and a few of us are wading through the tumultuous sands of Dubai in Spec Ops: The Line. Get ready to plow through some other great titles this September, and join GrayGhost81 as he moves to the retro side with playthrough veteran, Fleach, to host the Konami PSX classic, Metal Gear Solid (PSX/PSN/PS2/PS3/360/PC). Likewise, retro host singlebanana takes a walk on the wild side with games buster, Disposed Hero, and hosts next month's modern playthrough, Indigo Prophecy (PS2/XBox/Steam).

Certainly, I can't be the only one on this site who gets a little jealous when they read slakur's articles and hear about his weekly nights of gaming with friends. As I've mentioned before, I don't have a lot of friends who game and even fewer that actually collect games. However, over the last few weeks, a buddy of mine has been coming over to the house on Thursday nights to game. We have a great deal of fun playing some of the new games I've purchased (some of which I'm playing for the first time) and pulling games off the shelf that maybe he or I have never tried out.  The best part of the night is that he always has a plastic grocery bag in his hand when I open the front door to my house and I feel like a kid at Christmas eagerly awaiting to see what goodies are in that bag. Our game nights are definitely making my wishlist increase and my bank account lessen.

This past Thursday, we had another great night of gaming and played such awesome titles as: Castlevania: Bloodlines (Genesis), Soldier Blade (TG16), Air Zonk (TG16), The Combatribes (SNES), and Choplifter III (SNES).  As is always the case, we played a few stinkers as well and that night the list included The Tick (Genesis) and Tail of the Sun (PSX). However, out of all of the games we played, none of them surprised us more than Mobile Light Force for the original Playstation.
