At the inception of this article, I wasn't really sure exactly what to focus on. Would I do a top ten for the year? Would I do a top ten at all? What should I do it on? All of this was moot, considering that I wasn't confident that I could even name ten games off the top of my head that I played this year (not already covered in my blog). So with an empty head and a few ideas, I strove forward. I finally decided to touch on two articles that I never finished (but started out earlier this year), one article I wanted to write, but didn't quite get to, and three games that I remember playing that really spoke to me (that no one else covered).
*Note to future self: When doing a "Top of" list it is important to have a general idea of what games you played during said year. So in the future, it might be beneficial to actually keep up with the "Beaten Games" thread just in case I decide to do this again*

The third week of this year's fund drive was outstanding and has us so close to our $1000 goal!!! With only 10 more days left in the month of December, we are definitely on pace to make this happen. If you haven't donated and can, please take into consideration what a valuable service that this site provides. Even a few bucks means a lot and will get us that much closer to our goal. Also consider that every $10 you donate earns you a ticket to this years prize raffle, which will be drawn at the conclusion of the fund drive and donating at least $20 also gets you a copy of the Playcast's Episode #0, which includes discussions of Parasite Eve and Kingdom Hearts (more info and prize lots listed here: http://www.rfgeneration.c...m/index.php?topic=14799.0).
At this time, the staff at RF Generation would like to thank those who donated during the third week of the fund drive:

As we all transition through arbitrary signposts on to another blocked-off sequence of events, I find it best to lift my hands up and feel the wind instead of grabbing for the emergency brake. Still, reflecting where we've been, gives context to where we're going. So as the cart methodically clicks on the track at the top of the hill, let's close our eyes and recall the latest part of the journey before speeding down to Whiplashville. Note that these titles weren't all released in the last year (or decade), but simply a slice of my best gaming experiences since I forgot to update the calendar twelve months ago. Onto the list!!

Every so often there comes a game with such an absurd premise that you just can't help but try it out. Akiba's Trip is one such game. It was developed by Acquire and published by XSEED in North America. It was released in August of 2014 for PS3 and Vita, and on November 25th for the PS4. This game's setting is the Otaku and gaming Mecca of Akihabara. It also involves sun-fearing vampires and combat that revolves around stripping said basement dwelling Otaku vampires down to their skivvies. Otaku burn to a crisp from slight sun exposure after all! The main character is actually turned into one of these vampires in the introduction, and is saved by a pretty young girl with a kiss.

Last year Nvidia released their first serious attempt at getting into the mobile gaming market. And though it's not gotten nearly the attention of the 3DS or even the Vita, the Shield Portable is actually a pretty amazing piece of tech. Although it received a revised model in the form of this year's Shield Tablet (which seems to be an iPad competitor), I actually think that those of you out there looking to spend the bulk of your time gaming on the go are going to be far more interested in the (cheaper) Shield Portable.

Once upon a time there lived an Aunt who was really cool. A Cool Aunt, one might say. The Cool Aunt lived in ideal circumstances, and was quite fond of video games. So much, in fact, that she would often indiscriminately purchase games based exclusively on the cover of the box. Needless to say, Cool Aunt ended up with a lot of duds, but being that she was a true fan of video games, she would often play them regardless of their dubious quality. Still, some were beyond reproach, and ended up being chucked into a paper box underneath her entertainment center along with leafed through gaming magazines, strategy guides, and other bits and bobs (at one point there was a boxed Timex Sinclair 2068). And there those goodies sat, waiting for some youth, desperate for entertainment, to play them.

If you play Super Nintendo games you know what to expect. A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy III are fantastic games, which many of us hold close to our hearts. Perhaps these were games you played as a kid or during your teens, but you at least have the satisfaction of knowing that you've experienced these essential pieces of gaming history. What we played in North America is only the tip of the iceberg though. There are so many great role playing games that we never got to see because they never left Japan. Here are five games that, thanks to translators and/or repro developers, we can finally add to our backlogs.
