CCAG 2014. Cleveland's annual Classic Console and Arcade Gaming Show.

An event so enjoyed by my Beloved and I that we plan half a year in advance and spend the whole day getting the most out of it. It is mainly a vendor event, but it also has arcade and pinball tables set to free play, old PCs and consoles set up for fun, tournaments and competitions for prizes, and a Chinese auction spread throughout the day. We've been going for over a decade and have yet to be disappointed.
This year was particularly memorable for several reasons. We nabbed five (!!) more NES games for our set, over 50 PS2, GC, and Xbox games for a buck apiece, several C64 and Bally Astrocade carts, more systems and parts for our Xbox LAN (yay original Halo LAN!) along with lots more goodies. We got to reconnect and chat with several convention buddies, and we tried Colombian cuisine for the first time, which was absolutely delicious.
Also, for the first time I found myself in a pseudo-argument with a gentleman selling me a game.

The international success of the first Crash Bandicoot allowed Naughty Dog to get started on a sequel, and most of the team members remained intact for this transition. This let them build on the ideas from the first game and polish up problems, while adding new ideas. Sadly this created quite a few new problems. Despite all these new issues, Crash 2 was more successful than the first game, making it the best selling Western developed game in Japan when it was released. However, its international sales caused the game to fall a bit short of its predecessor in total sales.

There's a current trend in the video games scene to abandon the strict conditions synonymous with large-scale major name development studios in favor of smaller teams that focus on projects they are highly passionate about. This one of the major shifts that's currently changing the way we look at RPGs.
Once role playing games were associated with developers like Square, Atlus, or BioWare, but now smaller teams, some the size of a household family, are making names for themselves. They are the new trailblazers who are defying today's RPG status quo. They are the passionate creators who work on projects that are labours of love. Whether the game is the result of artistic expression or love of the bygone golden era of RPGs, these new names in the gaming market are generating a lot of buzz.

The MechAssault games released on the original Xbox represent one of the last pushes of the BattleTech franchise towards mainstream popularity. With all past successful games released on PC, it seems obvious that publisher Microsoft and developer Day 1 Studios (with some input by FASA Interactive) wanted a fresh reboot in the form of a new francise, one that would be playable only one Microsoft's new Xbox console system. But would this even be possible in a market that seemingly didn't give a rip about Western-style robot sims?

This is the first of a monthly series about older PC games that are not just great classic titles, but that hold up well enough to play today. Whether you are a long time PC gamer or just someone with a PC or Mac who is just a little curious about all of these amazing classic PC games that you have heard a ton about but have never played, I hope I can convince you to give some of these old games a try.
For this first entry, I thought I would talk about:

Beyond Oasis is an action/adventure game developed by Ancient for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It was released quite late in the system's lifecycle, late 1994 for Japan and 1995 everywhere else. Since Ancient was founded by Yuzo Koshiro, it also includes a soundtrack composed by him. This is most likely Sega's answer to The Legend of Zelda mixed with some Mana series, since there are many similarities in gameplay design, puzzle solving, and progression.

As many of you might have noticed, we have had a nice influx of members on the site lately. This has mainly been a result of mentions from Metal Jesus and Kotaku (see video and links at the bottom of this page). The staff here at RFGeneration would like to welcome all of our new members to the site and encourage all of you to not only house your collection here, but to also become active members of our site. The following is an explanation of our database tool, and also a brief description of some of the features that our site has to offer. If you haven't done so already, please introduce yourself on the introduction forum. We are always happy to hear from new members and learn a little about their collections and backgrounds: http://www.rfgeneration.c...um/index.php?topic=2931.0

Which is not to say that the game was mine to keep of course. Rather for that weekend I could download the game at no cost, and play the game all weekend, and then come Monday it would be locked up and I'd have to make the decision if I wanted to keep it or not. Though I've never actually bothered participating in any of these trials, it's nice that they exist, sure. But I guess in some ways they just haven't really fit into my life quite right. Which is to say that never has a game that I REALLY WANTED TO PLAY RIGHT NOW THIS WEEKEND been offered to me so that I was actually compelled to spend the time and bandwidth on a Friday night getting it into my library and then tossing my weekend plans to the side so that I could find as many minutes as I could to play it until bedtime on Sunday night.

As a means to be better host to our playthrough participants, we are announcing our August playthrough selections a bit early. Though these titles will not break your bank, they can be a little troublesome to locate, so we are giving you a bit of additional time to track down these games.
This month on the Retro Playthrough, we head back to Sega with Beyond Oasis for the Genesis. Many have criticized Sega for not having a game or series on the Genesis similar to or rivaling Nintendo's Zelda series. Others argue that Beyond Oasis is this "missing link" and provides a somewhat similar overhead gameplay experience with an added touch of beat 'em up stylistics. In Beyond Oasis the player controls Prince Ali, a young man who discovers a sacred golden armlet with the power to summon elemental spirits. Ali must do battle across the land in an attempt to stop the person who has located the silver armlet and is using it for evil. Beyond Oasis can be played on the Sega Genesis, the Wii's Virtual Console, on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the XBox 360 and PS3, and is currently on Steam. Please join us this month on what promises to be an exciting adventure.

In the Modern Playthrough for August, an amnesic fugitive and possessed princess cross paths in the intertwining story lines of Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Power hungry leaders are after legendary swords, and it is your duty to stop them. It is the height of the shogun era of Japan and you will have to hack and slash your way to saving the country from dragons and demons. Muramasa is by the same developers as Odin Sphere and is similarly a side scrolling hack and slash RPG. Muramasa: The Demon Blade is available for play on the Nintendo Wii, PS Vita, PSN, and is a free game this month on PS Plus (be sure to download it before August).
