Name(First only):
Brian

Location:
Southern NJ

Where does your screen name come from?
A handful of iterations of other screen names over the years all combined into a new or “Neo” one.

How did you find RFG?
I think I was looking for a way to keep track of my collection. I’ve been using the tools FAR longer than any other part of the site.

What made you stay and become part of RFG?
It is one of the few places on the internet that people don’t all suck.

Have you ever met or personally know anyone at RFG?
I’ve met Bill a few times. Duke once. I’m sure a few others....oh, also my wife made an account...does that count?

Number of Games Owned(at time of printing):
1067

Number of Games on Wishlist(at time of printing):
5 (although I’m bad at keeping it up to date)

Number of Systems:
25 by my quick count

When did you start collecting?
Proper collecting probably started around 2001 or so. Before that it was just heavy playing.

What was your first system you owned?
My mom had a NES that I played a bunch. MY first was a Genesis.

What was your first game?
Excitebike, followed by Zelda and SMB in the same day.

What was your first game you bought yourself?
The first one I remember buying with my own money was Startropics.

What made you decide to buy that particular game?
I liked Zelda and it looked cool. Also, it was on clearance!

First game you ever beat?
I actually do not remember. I remember Street Fighter 2 CE, Combat Cars, and Contra: Hard Corps were all early, but can’t decide on which one was first.

Have you ever broken anything due to frustration from a game? Be honest, we won't tell…
A few diets, deadlines, etc, but no physical stuff.

Are you collecting now, if so what anything specific?
Right now, I’m kinda just picking up things I want to play myself. I’m mostly focused on helping my wife find some DS games for her collection.

When did you feel a tipping point from gamer to both gamer and game collector?
When I had my own income. It was around the time I was smart enough to care about boxes and stuff as well.

What are your goals as a game collector, how have you developed them, and how do you feel about your progress toward them?
My goal is to play things I want to play, and always has been. Eventually, it’ll all be a showpiece for the living room in whatever house I eventually get.

How many games, systems, etc. are "enough"?
When I die, I think it’ll be enough.

What's your proudest moment as a game collector?
Every time I force an old game on my younger brother and sister. It's like I’m a historian of sorts.

What's your least proud moment as a game collector?
Trading in games and throwing out cases. I’m still undoing the harm...

If you had to give part of your collection away for a worthy cause what part would it be, and why?

It better be World Peace, and I suppose they can have my SNES stuff...I don’t particularly have any love for it anyway. (That's really a shame...)

Where/how do you store it all?
Most of my collection is on display in my room in the basement right now...even if it is a bit messy. Larger stuff is stored in totes in the other half of the basement.

What's your favorite part of your collection?
Sharing games with my friends. It is always cool to find something odd or weird and then share it.

What about a favorite series?
While I am a fan of a ton, I think Kirby has to be the all time favorite, even if I’m behind playing it.

What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to gaming?
I am a HUGE rhythm game fan...to excess.
I see that guitar on the wall!

What is the most valuable part of your collection(Value or sentimental)?
The ability to look around the room and have the sense of accomplishment that this is what I have worked for.

What game do you have the most nostalgia for?
Excitebike. It was my first game, and as bad as it is, I still pop it in every once in a while.

What would you like to improve in your collection?
Displays. I’m running out of display area and shelf space.

What do you think was your best deal while game buying?
I found a 100% CIB Pokemon Green, a Sega Nomad, and a whole host of other stuff at a yard sale in a bag for 5$.

What item in your collection do you feel you overpaid for?
Everything I’ve sold then re-bought. I hate it every time.

What do you feel is the strangest or weirdest item in your collection?
I’m a big fan of my Ace Combat flight stick. A bunch of people are familiar with the Steel Battalion controller, but get weirded out with the AC one...especially when it works better than a controller!

What item(s) do you not have in your collection that people are surprised to hear you don't have?

SNES RPGs. I have a surprising lack of SNES stuff, since I’m not a huge fan of its library.

Is there any way you'd ever stop collecting?
I’m pretty sure it would take more than one bullet to stop that one.

Do you have a funny story about your collection?
My 16 year old sister like to bring her friends over to play video games. Every time a new kid comes down the stairs with her to get a game, it is like you transplanted them to Disney.

Have you ever had to move your collection to another house? What was it like?
Yep...a few times. Keeping things organized in the boxes you use to move is critical.

If your significant other told you no more games, what would you do?
Not have a significant other anymore.

What percentage of your games are still sealed?
Maybe 1-2? I don't really like keeping things sealed. Games are meant to play!

What percentage of your games have you actually played? Completed?
I’ve played almost every game on the shelf, aside from the new stack from Christmas. If I’ve played 25% of my collection to an “ending” , I’d be surprised.

Do you own any complete collections?
I went for some weird subsets, like every North American PS1 Wrestling game, but no full sets.

Time to bring out the fanboys! What is your favorite game of all time?
Kirby’s Adventure.

Least Favorite?
The “Clean Up!” game.

Do you collect anything else besides games?
Board games (at about 100 or so). I also build Gundams / model kits.

What do you outside of games?
I’m a Chemical Engineer during the day. I run a group of streamers / convention panelists called “The Legends of the Interwebs” in spare time. Non-Video games include a health dose of competitive pinball, as well as Warmachine.

What other features would you like to see more of at RF Generation?
More meetups! RL is overrated, but the chance to hang out would be cool.

Shadow Kisuragi, the previous interviewee, asked, “What upcoming game release are you looking forward to? If you’re not looking forward to a new release, what upcoming release in the past were you most looking forward to?"
I’ve already taken time off from work for Monster Hunter World.

Thanks for your time!

Another great read! Why the SNES dislike? Can't we all just get along? Ha ha

@singlebanana: Dude, right?

I'm with @singlebanana Hearing someone doesn't like the SNES hurts my soul.

No worries on the SNES stuff. You can send it to me ;-)

Nothing wrong with some Kirby and Rythm Games!

I don't hate the SNES. It just lacks a solid set of games that I am into (I really don't do RPGs to often), and I have no nostalgia for it, like I do for Genesis and NES since I never had one as a kid.

@NeoMagicWarrior: That is the exact reason I feel the way I do about the Genesis. I get that there are good games on the system, but I didn't get one until much later, so I feel like I missed out on some great stuff.

Yeah, if you aren't into JRPGs I get that.  The SNES has a lot of other games to play, but to me anyway, it's library is defined by what many consider to be the golden age of the JRPG.  For me I have problems playing the games because I played them so much back in the day I'm kind of burnt out on them.  I don't hate them, I just think the PSX ones are better.

Anyway, another great interview and set of pics.  I wonder who will be next?

Another great interview!  I'm kind of with you on the SNES, Neo.  I don't have the nostalgia for it like the NES and Genesis, and since I didn't really get into RPGs until adulthood, there wasn't a ton of stuff on the console that I wanted to play.  I also had very little experience with the SNES prior to adulthood, because none of my friends had one, and I only got to play it a little bit when one friend rented a SNES one weekend.  Other than than, it's all been since I bought my own used console.  Even in the nearly 20 years since I bought one, my library is still very small.

As much as the world has changed, our still somewhat niche spot as gamers has adapted to the times as well as the games. We have created our online museum of our past. We share our experiences about the present. And we will evolve together as the gaming community continues to change. I hope to write about some of my experiences with gaming, as well as on some topics that were not directly relevant to me, but to the community or you personally.
