Hey everyone, now that my one year anniversary is over I've got two games and one demo to add to the Mega CD collection. And also there's a topic to discuss.

Left is Yumemi Mystery Mansion, also known as Yumemi Yakata no Monogatri, which is translated to Mansions of Hidden Souls which is the US title. When I was looking through the auctions the thing that caught my eye was the spine card, which was attacted onto the case by double sided sticky tape, a slow steady hand and a kitchen knife can can do the trick. I usually find the game for sale for around 30 - 40 even without the spine card, so getting this for 14.50 was lucky of me.

Right is Jaguar XJ220, another Core game, and apparently a good racer. Both this and the BC Racers Yellow disc demo were from the same guy, I was also trying to bid for Blackhole Assault from the same guy, but despite bidding at the last minute I was still outbid. Jaguar was 3 and BC Racers Demo was 2.95.

I've been thinking a bit lately about video game collecting in the future, How would video game collecting be like in around 15 years? The DS and the Wii seem to be the follow up of the Gameboy and NES in terms of there game library and there positions in the current markets, would that make the Xbox 360 and PS3 more pricey in the future? Maybe not.

Also, what would make the games more collectable, because now almost all game systems, handheld or not, use plastic cases, the term "MINT Condition" may be obsolete when selling these kinds of games, and what about the cardboard game sleeves, will they increase the value of games like Spine Cards did? What about the Guitar Hero games? Will the accessories become as bland as steering wheels became, meaning they'll go down in price? Or what about the Wii Balance board? I don't know, I think it's something good to discuss.

Amount Paid:

Yumemi Mystery Mansion* (E) 14.50

Jaguar XJ220 (E) 3.00

Yellow BC Racers Yellow Disc 2.95

Total cost:
466.65

I think the most obvious answer to your question of collectibility is that the items that are most easily damaged now are going to be more collectible in the future. Things like working, non-repaired Xbox 360's (especially the early ones) are going to be high on the list for collectibility. A lot of the games that have the cardboard sleeves that the cases fit into will also be more collectible.
Then there is the "disposable" stuff like Rock Band boxes, people do not want to store those huge boxes, so most of them are going to be tossed or will be so mangled from storing the instruments, that pristine condition ones will be worth a fair bit.
Finally, things with low production numbers and especially those that develop a cult following later on down the road (think Earthbound) are going to be collectible.

Of course, collectible doesn't always mean profitable or valuable, so it's not necessarily wise to go out and buy a bunch of new Rock Band sets and store them in a warehouse to sell them for a profit in 15-20 years.

I think most of the ridiculous accessories that are coming out now are going to drop in value the same way most 3rd party controllers do.

I doubt you will even be able to make a profit down the road on the GH and RB games. THere are so many of them sold now that you won't make a profit compared to what you had spent on them new.

Well seeing as though all games come in disc form now.  Finding one 20 years from now that doesn't have a single scratch on it ( MINT )  would probably be pretty hard.

Like NES said, 1st edition Xbox 360 that works and hasn't been refurbished.

GBA Boxes.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band Boxes Mint.  Also stickers, for the guitars, that haven't been used.

MAYBE for a SERIOUS DIE HARD COLLECTOR.  A PS3, PSP, XBox 360 that still has the original firmware and what not. I don't know that might be strectching it a little.  Smiley

I agree with people above me said: unrepaired working Xbox 360's will be hard to find. Wii's and PS3's will probably be much easier to find.

The GBA was the last system with cardboard boxes, finding CIB games for that system will be like finding CIB NES games now.

What exists much more today than in the past are all the collector's/limited/special editions of games. Those that are truly limited (limited print runs) will definitely become hard to find. Especially if they originally came with a bunch of extra's and special boxes, it could be hard to find those CIB in 20 years. (Like the ultimate (or whatever it's called) edition of Modern Warfare 2 with the nightvision goggles)

With all the model changes with the PS3s and 360s there are bound to be some more collectable than others. Especially CIB because system boxes still get thrown out a lot and are all cardboard.

I would imagine that some end of life PS2 games that see limited distribution or low production counts. It seems that once people move onto the next generation of consoles those last few titles seem outdated for the time and sell poorly.

Thats usually true with a lot of systems, but its possible that just because the PS2 had so many units sold that even end of life games will be plentiful. I think it will be interesting to see what happens in that regard.

@ Crabmaster2000

That's a valid point, but holding onto a few sealed Atlus RPGs would be prudent if you are looking for long term return on investment.

@Duke.Togo

Only if you can get them for cheap and can hold onto them for a VERY long time. Lots of sealed games from the SNES era still arnt worth more than they originally retailed for. I wouldnt do it as an investment. Maybe as a sweet future trading item though.
