Welcome to a world where a game's physics engine doesn't dictate what happens. Welcome to a world where damage means nothing, or everything. Welcome, to The Glitch Files, where you will encounter some of the strangest, most bizarre, and downright odd glitches of the gaming world. Not only will we show you footage of the glitch, but will give directions on how to exactly preform said glitch for yourself!

Today's special features the Minus 1 World Glitch, from perhaps the most popular game on the planet, Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System or Famicom in Japan. This glitch, which occurs in World 1-2, takes you to an infinite loop underwater level, and has no real purpose, because the only way to get out is to die and get a game over or reset! Nevertheless, it is still a fun and interesting glitch to preform. More info after the break. Wink

So, in all essence, this glitch is very basic. You preform what is needed with the right tools, and there you go! The Minus World Glitch. So, what tools do you need? A NES, a copy of SMB, and a controller. I have heard it is possible to do this on the Wii Ware version as well, so these directions will apply to that too.

Steps:
  • Turn on the NES with Mario in the Cart slot, and progress through the game until the end of world 1-2. Make sure that you are at least Super Mario, Fire Mario can be used as well, but normal Mario cannot.
  • Now, you see the pipe at the right of the screen? You will have to jump on the edge of the pipe, crouch down, and jump into the ceiling almost directly above you, at the slightest angle. This requires a fair bit of trial and error. Once you get it right, Mario will kind of be 'sucked in', and glitch through the wall on the right side of the screen.
  • Now that you are through the wall, go into the pipe.
  • And there you are, an infinite level that you can goof off in. No real point other that proving you can do it, but you have to admit, it is pretty neat!

I remember when I first saw this glitch years ago.  It was fun at first untill I realized it was a never ending loop.  Somehow it became a huge headache after......

I find it amusing that it resembles a regularly fleshed out level, and not some crazy, random glitchy world. Makes you wonder how it came to be.
 
I think it was a testing level.  I could be mistaken but I remember reading about it being an easter egg in a mag.  Still think it was annoying after a few tries.
 
@c5187: I was actually wondering if there was an in depth explanation somewhere on the internet. What I would imagine is happening is, since the pipe through which Mario exits the level isn't loaded onto the screen in a normal way, it works as a normal level exit. I'm fairly sure that this glitch doesn't work if you walk farther than the above video, because it will load the warps. Since the normal level after 1-2 is 1-3 (the water level) it loads that level. I'm not sure why it would produce -1 as the level number. I think when you go to exit the water level, there is a variable that hasn't been set (because you never technically jumped on the flagpole to finish 1-2) and it sends you back to the beginning of the level again, which would explain the infinite loop. It would be interesting to see the code that makes this happen.
