JUNE 2018 COMMUNITY PLAYTHROUGH

For our June playthrough, Shawn and I thought that with Detroit: Become Human just around the corner, it might be nice to polish off the Quantic Dreams series with a playthrough of Beyond: Two Souls. Like its predecessors, Beyond is an interactive, drama-laden, action-adventure video game where interacting with objects and non-players progress the story.  The game also features QTEs, or quick time events, which make the player manipulate the controller through button pressing, stick maneuvering, or physically moving it to obtain desired results. Choices in this game are always not so simple and may cause some players to challenge and adhere to or forego their perceived moral constructs.

The story of Beyond: Two Souls centers around Jodie Holmes (primarily voiced and mocaped by Ellen Paige), a girl with psychic abilities and a connection with a mysterious entity named Aiden. Along with him, she can communicate and perform telepathic acts, such as possessing peoples' minds and manipulating certain objects. After an incident with some neighborhood kids results in Aiden almost killing one of them, Jodie's foster parents seek help to care for her condition and permanently leaving her under the custody of doctors Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe) and Cole Freeman (Kadeem Hardison) of the United States Department of Paranormal Activity. It's not long before a government agency learns of Jodie's powers and attempt to exploit them for their own gain.  What happens next is up to YOU!

We hope that you are as excited about this pick as we are, so be sure to grab yourself a copy for the PS3 today! Also, please join in to discuss the game by signing up on our Beyond: Two Souls discussion thread.

Also, REMEMBER that if you're planning to record a roast for the Playcast's 50th episode, you'll need to start prepping.  Submissions are due by June 1st so that we can work them into the episode. If you're interested in submitting some audio, please contact singlebanana via PM. Thank you.

THE "ALL NEW" RF GENERATION SHMUP CLUB

MetalFRO here, and I’d like to invite you to join us on a new adventure starting in June – the RF Generation Shmup Club! In this new adventure, we’ll be playing a single game each month, but will focus entirely on shoot-em-ups, and related games, such as run ‘n gun, or on-rail shooters. On the forums, we’ll have a topic for each month, so we can discuss strategies, talk about the game we’re playing, and share scores. Rather than playing to complete each game, we’ll be discussing the game’s design choices, talk about things we like and dislike, and talk about what makes the game good or bad.  Not good at shooters? No problem! The goal of this club isn’t to complete games or brag about a 1-credit clear, but to just play the games, have good discussions about them, and just have fun! So join us and play along to venerable classics, new indie shmups, and some of the crazy bullet hell games that have graced the genre over the last 30+ years. You may also discover a new favorite or two, among the more obscure games we cover. So polish that P-47 fighter plane window, don your flight suit, and let’s get blasting!

The first game we’ll be playing for the RF Generation Shmup Club is the classic R-Type! Released in the arcade in 1987, this shoot-em-up legend has seen a release on multiple platforms. It hit nearly every microcomputer and PC format, as well as the Sega Master System, TurboGrafx, and even the Game Boy! There’s a faithful arcade conversion on the PlayStation “R-Types” collection, and even a revamped port on the PS3 and Xbox 360, called R-Type Dimensions, with updated graphics and sound. Regardless of how you play it, you’re sure to have scary fun, as the game’s artwork was heavily inspired by legendary science fiction artist H.R. Geiger. Blast off and strike the evil Bydo empire with your fellow RF Generation squad members, and help save the galaxy!

Please sign up and join in to discuss the game by signing up on our R-Type discussion thread.

Shmup Club, woot! Also, I might have you also join you guys in Beyond: Two Souls. I don't have it yet, but I can't imagine it's expensive, and as much as I enjoyed Heavy Rain, I'm definitely interesting in another of their adventures.

@MetalFRO: Wonderful!  Yes, not expensive now at all.

Great job everyone. @ Fleabitten - you're an animal.

If I wasn't so busy, I'd love to set up a Bmup Club, but I'm so busy...
