Posted under RFG Thanks, October 2011, Submissions, Thanks

I hope everyone survived their Halloween night  and didn't get too scared. While yesterday may have been frightening, October certainly wasn't scaring away our submitters this month. Not only did we have a good month here at RFGeneration, we had a record breaking month at RFGeneration! That's right, in October 2011, we had more submissions in one month than any other since we starting tracking submissions in November 2006. Our previous record was in May of this year with an amazing 9,587 submissions. So you better believe this month was OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!! In fact, RFG members made an astounding 12,790 submissions in just 31 days. Thank you to all of you who made that happen.

Now, we normally try to not single out any particular member for their submissions since they are all important in their own way, but this month special credit is due to Tynstar. Because, you see, 10,000 of the monthly submissions were made by him. That's right, in one month he alone submitted more than our entire community in any other month. He even celebrated his 7th year at RFGeneration this month, so its especially nice to see someone who has been around for so long still so active in the database. So if you see Tynstar around on the forums or in person give him a pat on the back, he really deserves it.

For the rest of you, you won't be overshadowed by Tynstar's accomplishments. There were 72 other members who made submissions this month, so thanks goes out to all of you. The rest of members who made 100 or more submissions in October was Shadow Kisuragi, Izret101, Necron99, ixtaileddemonfox, NES_Rules, douglie007, and raffa1985.
And of course, we have our dedicated team of submission reviewers, who have to sift through the thousands of submissions every month. Our top reviewers were Shadow Kisuragi, Tynstar, and Paully3433.

If you're wondering what all these fine people were making so many submissions for, they were adding 884 images, adding 222 games, adding 50 hardware pieces, and editing 11,418 game pages.

Thanks everyone who made this record breaking month happen.

A quick blurb today reflecting on my Halloween - this Halloween, I learned a valuable lesson...real life physics are not always like game physics...

Let me start at the beginning. Halloween we had a movie viewing party, so, in the early afternoon my roommate and I went shopping for Halloween goodies at local stores. The local Spirit Halloween store was a bust, so we decided to go to Joanns to see if they had anything good. We found some good things, then went to leave.
Someone had so kindly decided to part their F250 truck next to us, in our spot! I could not back out without scraping the side of their car (and my husband's car at the same time). I decided to drive forward since there was no one in the spot ahead of me - but there was one major malfunction - both my roommate and I had forgotten about the parking stall concrete barrier in front of us. I went right over the first one (there were two - one for each side). I could not get back off the first one (darn you front wheel drive). So, we decided the best course of action was to go over the second one. Worked like a charm for the front wheels....the back wheels got caught on the first barrier...I had to give up and call my husband for help and he pushed while I hit the gas. This worked for the first barrier, but not the second. He got in while my roommate pushed and was able to gun it over the second one - success! The car was free...
However, I am reminded, oddly enough of the Ghostbusters video game - the second one on the NES. If only my husband's car could hop like the Ecto1!!!

Lesson learned.

Having recently played through Gunbird 2 -- another vertical shmup published by Capcom -- I assumed that I knew what was in store with me when I popped in GigaWing. Apparently I had no idea about the punch-you-in-the-crotch difficult game that was ahead of me, though. I recently decided that I would approach shmups by playing through them on the easiest difficulty first, and then incrementally attempting to take on harder levels of difficulty. But what I found was that even on the easiest difficulty (level 1 out of 5), GigaWing was amazingly tough.

Which is not to say I didn't like the game. I did. It's just that the challenge caught me off guard. But really it's a great looking game, with wonderful sprite-work and an onslaught of bullets that never slow the system down for a second. The music is fittingly good techno tunes, though strangely the boss battle music sounded very close to the Mortal Kombat theme song. (Remember? dun-nuh-dun-nuh-dun-NUH-dun-nuh-DUH-DUH!). I can't really comment on the story, as I own the Japanese version. But then again, I've never been one to pay close attention to storylines in shmups.

I am curious though -- is GigaWing as hard as I think it is? I mean, I'm no shmup expert, but I do pretty well and I've played quite a few. Was I just having an off day? Have any of you freaks actually 1CC'd this thing? Seems impossible to me.

Tried staring the night with some Ninja Gaiden II and wasnt able to see my secondary weapons. If I picked up the powerup that give you an orange clone ninja thing though I could see that guy only when I took damage and dissapeared from the screen. It was interesting. I figured NGIII would have a similar issue so I just jumped to another game. Any ideas on how to get around this problem? I can use my VCR, but I'd much rather do my playing on the computer since it saves me a step and has better quality results.

Spent a lot of time playing Dr. Mario after that. I know the game loops at stage 24 so my goal is to conquer stage 24 on medium. Made it to stage 23 a few times, but couldnt quite get by. Sucks since if you lose your back to stage 20.

Took a break and played a couple hours (yes hours) of Where's Waldo?. I'm quite happy to say that, like Jaws, I'll never have to play it again!! I noticed I was getting better and better at finding him so I didnt want to quit playing and have to get used to looking for his blurry, pixelated, little ass again. Luckily the hardest stage by far to find him was the second one so whenever I screwed up it was easy to reset. There were 3 mini-games that broke up the 5 searching areas. The first mini-game in the cave was super easy, but the clock you pick up randomly adds or subtracts 1 minute from the 7 minutes I had to complete the game. If it subtracted it basically meant game-over. The second mini-game was the most interesting and most frustrating. You have to navigate a small maze and collect, Waldo and his Glasses and then escape. If you touch the Evil Waldo-ish thing your time plummets so fast that there is no hope for recovery even if you only graze it for a second. It was fun figuring out how to navigate the maze, but losing time to your Evil self was much to harsh. I'm sure you'll agree that its the most exciting video I'll ever post though!

Hey now!

Ever since Shadow Kisuragi started posting the GameCenter CX series on RFG, I've been absolutely captivated by the Kacho and his valiant efforts to conquer the most maddeningly difficult old school retro games ever produced. So much so, in fact, that I've started watching the later shows on YouTube.

However, if you think I'm gonna horn in on Shadz's action by posting GameCenter CX episodes on my blog, you've got another thing comin'. As far as I'm concerned, that's Shadz's prerogative, and I'm not gonna play a fellow 'Generator like that. More importantly, however, the dude's part of the site admin, which means he most likely has access to the dreaded RFG banhammer. So it's a really good idea for me--and all of you as well--to stay on his good side. Ya dig? Wink

Well, actually I am horning in on the action, albeit in a roundabout way: by posting a few of the 3DS commercials Arino has starred in. Much like GameCenter CX itself, the commercials show the beloved Kacho failing hard, yet taking it all in stride with that happy-go-lucky demeanor his fans have come to know and love.

Anyway, enjoy:

BTW am I the only one who'd like to see Arino try to play a retro game while drunk? Tell me that wouldn't be the greatest thing ever...

Started the night off right by killing Jaws. It still took me several tries to stab the big jerk, but I eventually did it. I think the trick was to wait for him to be moving away from you when you get him to jump out. Thats the only thing I can think of because I'm pretty sure all my previous attempts were with him charging me. Whatever the method was, I'll never have to use it again Smiley

Thought I'd sink my teeth into some Ninja Gaiden after that. Spent about 1 and a half hours playing and getting my ass handed to me by Jaquimo's (I dont remember if I spelt that correctly) second form. Took a break and did some work (I actually have to do that once and a while:P) Came back and had a much better run. Still took a few tries more than I would have liked, but I really cant complain to much.

While browsing my local Target Store the other day, I happened across this game. There was a whole section in the Store dedicated to this particular game. I quickly learned that you use little figurines to play the game, much like how you use cards to play The Eye of Judgement, also on PS3. Anyway, despite being targeted towards a younger audience, I won't lie and say I wasn't intrigued by this concept, because I was. Anyway, at the time, I didn't have the cash to buy it (70 US Dollars), so I just said "Meh.", and decided to wait. Well, fast forward to tonight, I got paid, and decided to head over to the Store right after work and pick it up.

I got home, unpacked it, started it up, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by this game. It was actually fun, and I enjoyed it. I also love the concept. You place the figurines on the base that comes with the game, and they are put into the game and you use the one placed on the base as your Character. You can switch them at will to overcome different obstacles in the game. Perhaps the coolest thing in this game is that it features a certain famous Dragon from the PlayStation 1 days.

That "famous Dragon" pictured above is Spyro. Although if you grew up in the 90's, you probably already knew that. He's one of the figurines you can use in the game, and his attacks remind me of the 90's in such a way that's just awesome. Although his appearance has changed some over the years, he still kicks ass.

Anyway, getting back to the game, Spyro is joined by many other Skylanders, including the two in the top picture. There are over 30 of them to collect, with more probably coming soon. As for how the game plays, it's kind of difficult for me to explain. Picture a top-down view similar to Sacred 2 or Diablo 2. You run around collecting items, fighting enemies, and generally just exploring the Skylands, which is the world this game takes place in. Each Skylander has two different attacks (as far as I know) for taking down enemies, a weak, rapid fire attack, and a stronger, single fire attack. I'd place this game in the genre of Action RPG.

Another cool feature of this game is that, when you equip hats (yes, hats) on your Skylander, the Data is stored on the figurine, so that if you play on a friend's console, your character will still be equipped with that hat.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, this game is geared towards a younger audience, but I still had fun with it, and it looks to be a pretty long game, so it should keep me busy for a while.

Alright, that's it for now. This is ReddMcKnight, signing off!

 • Face Training: Facial Exercises to Strengthen and Relax from Fumiko Inudo (European release only)

========================
====================

This list is not comprehensive. My understanding of how "DSi-enhanced"ness functions is a work-in-progress. Even if I understood it properly, the DS library is thousands strong, and I simply don't have access to information about every game.

Please add to this list! I don't own a DSi, so I can only compile information from others. Googling for DSi enhancements always seems to turn up frustratingly little information, game databases all seem to list DSi enhanced games in with DS games (with no way to sort them out separately if you want that information), and I generally just don't trust ROM sites to have correct information. If you can fill in a blank, hook me up with a database that has information RGF doesn't, give me some search tips, suggest a database (English language or otherwise) whose information is reliable --whatever could help-- please do!

===

IMPORTERS, PLEASE NOTE:
The DSi, DSi XL, and 3DS are region locked, and so is their exclusive software - DSi-enchanced cards, DSi-exclusive cards, and 3DS cards. If you are an import gamer, DO NOT IMPORT a DSi-enhanced game expecting to be able to play it on your DSi, DSi XL, or a 3DS.

But, just to make things confusing, you can play any DSi enhanced game on an original DS model or DS Lite. Don't worry, most DSi enhanced games aren't worth importing, even if you have a high tolerance to mediocrity and a wide range of interests like me.

===

SOURCES: I'm relying on online sources to compile this. Notably, I've used GameFAQs, RFGeneration, Amazon, and ebay all to a great extent. I have also used NintendoAge quite a bit.

===

ASSUMPTIONS: When compiling this list, I am working under these assumptions:

[Assumption 1] No DSi-enhanced games were released before June 2009.

[Assumption 2] Not all games with DSi enhancements advertise them.  If the box art of a game advertises DSi enhancements, the game is DSi-enhanced.

[Assumption 3] A DS game whose code has TWL instead of NTR is a DSi-enhanced. Exceptions to this rule are the 4 known DSi-only games (listed). Also, packaging for bundles of DS games with DSi units bear the TWL marking.

The best way to determine a game's code is from a SCAN of the game card itself, followed by a scan of the back of the game box's packaging.

When gamers err in transcribing the game code, they tend to err on the side of writing NTR for a TWL game.

===

METHODOLOGY: The bulk of this list relies on two sites: GameFAQs and Amazon.

I began by searching the GameFAQs archive. I narrowed the results to retail released DS games, showing only the first release per title, organized by release date. I then went through and checked each game's pictures and release data. I compiled a list of all games that were DSi-enhanced according to the assumptions laid out above.

For descriptions about the enhancements, I turned to descriptions from nintendo.com and Amazon (both product descriptions and reviews). As some games are exclusive to different regions, I go to different Amazon websites (.com, .co.uk, etc.). I also look at the descriptions on boxes. In a few cases I've used descriptions from gamers in web forums and review sites. Many descriptions of enhancements are missing because I cannot find adequate descriptions.

I have also googled for DSi-enchancements, using various terms and problems related to the issue, with limited success. I found a list of DS games on NintendoAge that would sort titles by product code, but it was slightly unreliable. I checked images on RFGeneration; games exclusive to non-English-speaking regions are particularly difficult to find information about, but seem to be more prone to TWL-ization, perhaps due to piracy concerns.

Lots of game playing tonight. More than usual if you can believe that.

Sarted it off with one of my childhood favorites, World Games. This one isnt exactly hard playing to beat since its mainly a versus game. My goal was to get the first place record in each event. I expected to have a little trouble with the Log Rolling and Sumo Wrestling, but to my surprise I got both of those records on my first attempt. Also to my surprise 3 events that I thought I'd ace right away took me several attempts each: Barrel Jumping, Slalom Skiing and Caber Toss. Barrel Jumping and Caber Toss used to be my best events so that was very unusual. Got it done though and even scored my first 99 (I think that is a perfect score!) on the cliff diving.

Followed up with some Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular. This was another one I played a bit as a kid. My goal was to get a medal. I ended up with a bronze medal, which for this challenge was good enough for me. The Pizza Walk and River Jump are both really annoying events so I basically had to do very well on every other event. If I could figure out how to score some points on either of those 2, I dont think a Gold Medal would be to hard.

Caveman Games! It just dawned on me that I must have really liked these ridiculous sports compilations since I played this one as a kid also. The events in this one are really goofy. Mate-Toss is probably my favorite, although Fire Making and Saber Race are also a lot of fun. Like World Games my goal was to get first in each event. Unfortunately there is no way to view all the records at once like on WG so you'll just have to take me word for it until the video goes up.

Followed up with some DK Classics. Just ran through one loop each of DK and DK Jr. That was enough to beat the default score and see all the levels. Quick and easy.

Next I tried to play some Dr.Mario and was doing very well, but then the game suddenly froze and gave me a little trouble when I went to start it again. I'll have to clean the contacts again before I give it another go.

Tried some Where's Waldo expecting another super quick victory. Turns out this game is hard as hell. I keep running out of time on the second level (of 8 I think). I did make it to the fourth area once, but that was only once. The graphics are so bad its really hard to find that jerk. Anyone have any tips for this gem?

Finished up with a lovely session of Jaws. I hate it. After finally figuring out what to do I had 4 chances to finish him off in the final battle and blew every time. You get 3 tries at it each time you get to him so I couldnt hit the damn giant shark even once out of 12 tries. It'll be a really short video when I finally figure out where exactly I'm supposed to stab him.

Started off the night with some Sky Shark and after exploding randomly several times it became quite obvious that I wasnt seeing many of the enemy bullets. I'll be resorting to my trusty VCR once again. I really need to pick up a better quality tape though, because my run of Metal Storm which I recorded the same way was pretty crappy quality.

Luckily I brought a few extra games along with me. Tried out some BreakThru on Tynstars advice. And what good advice it was. I would have been pissed had I payed full price for it when it was new. You are seeing my first play through of the game on the recording (aside from the 2 minutes I tested it after cleaning). Took me 30 minutes to complete, and part way through the game I realized how to use the jump more efficiently and could have dropped the time even more had I discovered that earlier.

Next up to bat was Commando. Unlimited continues meant it was just a matter of time and patience. It was a little rough at times, but I was able to finish it off it just under an hour. Stage 3 and 4 were both a bit of a pain, but with as many tries as I wanted I eventually eked my way through.

Last up tonight was Guerrilla War. Because of how the continue system was setup, start exactly were you dropped, this one was also a cake walk. After a bit I just started zooming through and taking full advantage of that system. Its probably one of the least interesting videos to watch since its just me running in a straight line and dying a lot.

So, I had a broken headset around episode 12, but didn't get around to getting a new headset until after I recorded this one. But this is now fixed ($25 later...)! Unfortunately, there are also some other glitches happening that we're ironing out, but I hope none of them made it in to the episode.

But there is good news! We did get another episode out and we're calling it our anniversary episode! We have our thoughts on the passing of Steve Jobs, a new segment called "While You Were Broke", our Game Shout-Outs!, the latest contest with details, and, of course, the Top 5.

BIG EDIT ABOUT THE CONTEST! After you solve the first clue, you need to find that game in the database. In the Game Trivia section, you will find the next clue. Find that game for the next one and so on. Find all 10 games and call or e-mail us your list first to win! Probably should have clarified that, but it's my first time trying this, so I expected some glitches.

Tried to slate my thirst for shooting tonight with some Legendary Wings. I thought it would be a quick 2-3 tries, hour and a half tops, kind of game. Turns out it wasnt Sad I forgot about the stupid glitch where you can get stuck in the walls and die (happens when you pick up a weapon upgrade or get hit by an enemy). That happened to me on two very promising runs. After way to many resets I was finally able to land a video of me finishing the game. Apparently all that practice payed off though since I was able to finish with a no death run. The game had very little dialogue, yet they managed to have a spelling error in nearly every single screen with words. Very amusing.

As suggested previously I spent my last few gaming sessions attacking Krang, Shredder and their gang. First attempt at TMNT 2 lead to an honorable defeat at the hands of Krang. The run helped me get familiar with the bosses, challenging areas and master Donatello's special attack. This made my next attempt much easier. I made a few mistakes, but still was almost able to beat the game without using a continue. I messed up very late in the game and had to use 1 though. The run seems very fluky since I beat about half the bosses with only 1 hit left (including Shredder), which was awesome since you start the next area with a full health bar! I've beaten this game before with my brother, but never by my self. Its a bit harder playing solo.

Next came TMNT 3. After playing 2 so recently I really had to adjust my play style. Spamming the special move and jump kick got me through 2 almost entirely. 3 however made the jump kick much weaker, and often got me punched for even trying to attempt it. And though the special moves were awesome, they cost a health, unlike 2 so I had to use them sparingly. The good news was that if you were on your last health you could spam your special as long as you wanted until you got hit again. It was also nice to be able to swap turtles with each death, instead of each continue. They each have a different special that comes in handy on certain bosses. While Donatello is my favorite and I wanted to use him, Leonardo's special was much better on most bosses, so most of the run is with him. It was a nail biter and I beat Super Shredder with about 2 hits left on my last continue, but this also marks the first time I've ever finished this game too.

I've officially caught up on my uploading backlog so now I just have to keep up with games as I finish them. Anyone know what the maximum length or size is that I can upload to youtube? I put a 2 hour Blaster Master video on there and didnt seem to have an issue. Wondering if I can hit the 5-6 hour mark for some future titles.
