As my collection has been growing, my acquisitions have been slowing. It makes sense that at some point, you will eventually reach a saturation point in your collecting in which it's harder to find titles that interest you than it used to be when you had less games. However, I still really enjoy gaming and collecting so I don't want it to stop quite yet. Over the last few weeks, one of my collecting goals has been to update my rfgen wishlist. Sounds simple enough. Yet, I found myself pouring well over 50 hours into this project. I wanted to make sure my list was comprehensive and accurate. This meant reaching out to trusted friends with expertise beyond mine for certain libraries, doing a fair bit of research, and watching a ton of YouTube playthroughs before assigning a coveted checkmark to the wishlist box.

As a kid growing up in the early to mid-90s, videogames were a huge part of my childhood.  Like many kids from that time, I had a Game Boy and played it most often while away from home.  However, there was one game I owned for the Game Boy that kept me playing whether I was at home or on the go:  The Legend of Zelda: Link's AwakeningLink's Awakening was an important game for me growing up, taking the formula of A Link to the Past, one of my all-time favorite games, and condensing it to Game Boy form meant it was an automatic hit in my book.  It also helped that a good friend of mine at that time was also playing the game, so we would often compare notes and help each other along throughout the game.

But wait!  This isn't an article about Link's Awakening, so why am I spending so much time talking about it?  Well, it has come to my attention recently that the topic of this article, a game by the name of For the Frog the Bell Tolls, and Link's Awakening have a lot in common.  Specifically, both games share the same engine, so the aesthetic as well as certain gameplay mechanics are nearly identical between these two games.  With Link's Awakening being a game that is so near and dear to me, I knew I had to check out For the Frog the Bell Tolls, so I bought an original Japanese Game Boy cartridge of the game and popped it into my Retron 5 complete with an English language translation patch so I could enjoy this adventure firsthand!

Video games have the ability to draw from the full range of emotions and reactions from the human mind, and can still be considered good even while focusing on drawing out such reactions as frustration and annoyance into its core design. It feels good for the mind to overcome a challenge, so the feeling of relief that comes after the period of high challenge feels all the more sweet. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this, whether building the game from the ground up to be in this way, or to give a robust set of free form tools that allow for a unique experience with each new map. Horror games and games designed to be tense, difficult experiences can easily feel like they're drawing from the natural curiosity of humans to see what lies behind the next door.

I'm not sure about you, but "you gotta believe" I'm a sucker for a good rhythm game. Game mechanics are usually boiled down to "hit this button at this time", but in reality all games are the same; rhythm games are just more explicit about it. Since I've moved my gaming stuff into the basement, I've been able to enjoy them a fair bit more than normal, and I figured it would be a good time to go through a few of my favorites (in no particular order).

I've been at this for about thirty hours now, and I'm not sure exactly about my goal.  I mean, I know what the next quest is that I should be going on (as far as the story is concerned), rather it's my personal goal that's in question. See, as I move around the landscape on my way to someplace, I find myself distracted by literally hundreds of various caves, grottoes, castles, outposts, bandits, camps, giants herding woolly mammoths, and dragons.  I've been doing this for thirty hours.  And here is another keep, which I (of course) have to clear, for no reason save to get a "clear" mark on my map.  Man, is that mountain pretty, bathed in the morning sun with the clouds partially concealing the peaks, yet clearly moving...

Oh, man.  Where the heck was I even going?

It seems Sega intended Fantasy Zone and Space Harrier to be interconnected, as both titles take place in the same universe ("the Fantasy Zone") and have crazy character designs. In 1991, NEC Avenue took the next step and combined both games into one Super CD game for the PC Engine CD/Turbo CD called, Space Fantasy Zone.

DISCLAIMER: I made this entry to direct people on my YouTube Channel who were curious about who I am and what I do. That's all.

That's me in front of the TARDIS at a Comic Book Convention.

Hi there. If you've made it to this Blog Entry, then you likely came from my YouTube Channel's "About" Section, here: https://www.youtube.com/user/ReddMcKnight/about

If you were looking for information about me, you've found it, so here it is.

Name & Basic Info
I am Stuart, but my YouTube Moniker is ReddMcKnight. As of this entry, I am 28 Years Old, and I'm an Advanced Level Gamer. (Yes, there is a difference between Advanced and Expert.)

What I Do
Officially, I'm a Freelancer. I don't keep a steady job, instead choosing to do odd jobs. Online, I'm just a Gamer.

The Point of my YouTube Channel
I am not here to collect views or make money. I play what I want, when I want, and when my friend developed an interest in watching me play something to find his own game to play, it just sort of went from there. That said, I guess I just want Gamers to discover other games they may like too.

Genres
I will play almost any genre of game. The main question is, is it fun? Good or Bad according to moronic Critics is irrelevant. However, my favorite genre will, without a doubt, always be RPG. Fighting is a distant second.

The Best Game Ever & The Worst Game Ever
My favorite game of all time, Chrono Cross, is the best game ever. Nothing is ever going to top it. Without a doubt, the worst game ever is Rise of the Robots. Never has a game made me rage as bad as that one did.

Rage
I generally keep calm when playing games on YouTube Videos, but it's a different story when I'm not recording. I have an extreme temper when I screw up at a game repeatedly. I have yet to break any controllers or anything else in my anger yet.

The Battle Begins
I was born in 1988, and began gaming in 1990, with Super Mario Bros. on the NES. My Grandmother taught me the Way of the Game, and there is no doubt in my mind that I will be playing games until the day I pass.

The First Success
The first game I ever beat was The Magical Quest for SNES, back in 1995. Amazingly, I have never forgotten the feeling that came with that victory.

The War I Fight
One thing I take kind of personally is long wait times between sequels. That said, you've likely noticed that I post quite a few videos of Killer Instinct, targeting the villains of the game. The reason for this is that I loved Killer Instinct 2, so when the new one was released in 2013, I went nuts. I bought it the moment I was able to, and haven't stopped since. Once it's Story Mode was released, it was quickly made public that a secret final boss was found. When I couldn't beat it, I was pretty upset. One year later, I came back to it, and finally overcame the boss. At that point, something woke up within that said "This game is YOUR forte. You will become the best Single-Player Fighter in the State.", and the rest is history.

Misc. Info
There's not much to me, really. As you can see, I'm just a Gamer. I love to play games, and that is never going to change. Ever.

I have never considered myself to be primarily a PC gamer, but there was a time back in the late '90s and early 2000s when I did a considerable amount of gaming on the PC.  During this time, I played such revered classics as Half-Life, Max Payne, and Deus Ex, all of which I would consider to be among my all-time favorites.  Many excellent games were being released exclusively on PC, and when these titles were later ported to consoles, the results were often lackluster.

One such game from this era that I have always remembered fondly is Mafia.  Releasing less than a year after the immensely popular Grand Theft Auto III, it may be easy to dismiss Mafia as a cheap knockoff.  While Mafia may resemble the Grand Theft Auto series at first glance, I have always felt that it was the "anti-GTA" game.  Although both games share similarities with their open-world environments, crime-based stories, and emphasis on driving and shooting gameplay mechanics, Mafia's more serious and less satirical tone, focus on realism, and larger emphasis on narrative rather than free roaming sandbox gameplay sets it apart from Rockstar's juggernaut.

I'm not a huge Pokemon fanatic. I have dabbled in the series on and off since Blue and Red though. I've beaten and enjoyed Pokemon Blue, Diamond, Y, Snap, Trozei, and Stadium. I've played several others like Gale of Darkness, Mystery Dungeon and the more recent Pokemon Go, and found myself satisfied with the experiences. Heck I've even occasionally enjoy a few games of the Pokemon TCG.

My son is now 8 years old and is in prime Pokemon territory. After hearing some good things, I decided to get us a joint Christmas present of the Pokemon Sun/Moon double pack (which has both versions of the game). It took a few weeks after Christmas to get some attention from either of us as we were pre-occupied with Lego, comic books, and life for a while. However, we finally decided to jump in and I've had a very interesting experience playing through this game alongside my son.

With the new year upon us, I thought I'd take a look at my Steam library. I wondered: going into 2017, what are the games that I've spent the most time playing? This is kind of easy to figure out, as I have been PC-only for years. But the tricky part is non-Steam games. I don't know about those as much. Though in fairness, the only ones that would end up here are Heroes Of The Storm and Hearthstone most likely.

So let's take a look at what I've played the most, according to Steam's hours logged anyway. And let's try to make some sense of me as a gamer. Maybe.

Nintendo is well known as the master of the platformer. Their style and characters have become ubiquitous throughout gaming. The company's own mascot Mario has inspired spinoffs on top of his own core platforming series, and Super Princess Peach is one such example. It was developed for Nintendo's DS by Tose, and feels like a crossover between regular Mario mechanics mixed with those of Yoshi's Island. The game also includes quite a few enemies from the Yoshi's Island spinoff series, which begs the question of how close this game's setting of Vibe Island is to the island that baby Mario and Luigi were dropped on as babies. The game was released in Japan in 2005, with international release the following year.

The original Doom that was released back in 1993 was an extremely important landmark title in gaming.  While not necessarily the first first-person-shooter to hit the market, it was definitely the game that popularized the genre.  I have fond memories of playing Doom sometime back in the mid-90s on PC when I was less than the age of 10, with its gameplay and (at the time) mature content being unlike anything I had ever experienced before.  Although the version I had only contained the first episode, I played through it multiple times, and it is still a game that I find myself going back to even today.  After the Wolfenstein series got a great new entry with MachineGames' excellent Wolfenstein: The New Order, I was confident that id's other classic franchise would receive the same treatment when a new game in the Doom series, simply titled Doom, was shown at E3 2015.  I was not disappointed.  In fact, even after playing other highly acclaimed games from 2016 such as Uncharted 4 and Final Fantasy XV, I still feel like I enjoyed Doom enough to call it my Game of the Year for 2016.

This is going to be a follow-up of sorts to my previous entry. Writing that post was quite cathartic, and putting into words feelings which I had trouble identifying over the past year or so. A month later I realize how down I really was about my fleeting passion for gaming and I knew I would need to bounce back, or my interest would fade further. I was hoping that hosting The Secret of Mana for the community playthrough and playing it on original hardware would light that spark, but to put it simply, it didn't happen that way. Instead, a combination of a few things happened concurrently. I soft-modded a secondhand Nintendo Wii and loaded it with emulators. I did the same thing to my phone. I started playing games wherever I could in an effort to add games to my post in the "Games Beaten" thread to get my count up in January for a big start to the year. So far I've played a lot of handheld games (because they are shorter), and I'll tell you a little about them in a bit. First I want to mention the other project I'm working on that has fired me up a bit when it comes to gaming.

I don't know about y'all, but in late December, the year 2016 didn't feel very memorable.  There were very few games I could even remember playing, so I scrapped the idea of a "Top" list of games and moved on.  However, as I reviewed my post on the "Beaten in 2016" thread, I couldn't help but reconsider this notion.  Pretty much all of the nine games on my list were awesome, and I was somehow able to finish them, despite my severe lack of time.  So, here is my end of year list, but re-written with a new angle - Top Four Games of 2016 I Didn't Blog About (Well, Mostly).
