So, it was bound to happen, after all, it happened in Japan recently. Starting Friday, you can get an Xbox 360 for less than a Wii. Granted, you're getting the 360 Arcade, and most of you will want the Pro or Elite, but yeah, they're all cheaper! Get that 360 for $199! Want the Pro or Elite? Those will set you back $299 and $399, respectively.

I bet some of you are happy about this development. C'mon! Something cheaper than what it was! It could convince you to invest in a new system, or... you could have already gotten a 360 years ago. Will it help 360 sales? Probably, but will it unseat the Wii? That will be a tougher cookie.

In a way, this development seems absolutely ridiculous and defies common sense...seriously, a GameCube 1.5 with half-baked motion controls and an absolutely atrocious library of games (after all, the PS2, the no. 1 of the last gen, got dozens of more interesting and polished games 1 and a half years after its release, including the likes of Ico, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Zone of the Enders, Gran Turismo 3...you get the idea. Compare that to the Wii and its handful of Nintendo franchises...kinda pathetic) is more expensive than a technically vastly superior system (that even saw a release one year prior to the Wii) with an excellent variety of good to totally awesome games in almost every single genre?
Every gamer in his or her right mind would and should get Microsoft's baby if given the choice between these two consoles, especially for such a terrific price.
It really feels strange for me, though...I used to hate Microsoft's first Xbox when it first hit stores in Europe, having been among the ones fearing a negative influence of Microsoft on the market...but now, years later, I appreciate the Xbox 360 as the current winner in the console war when it comes to pure, unadulterated quality of games, selection of games as well as upcoming titles. Nintendo, on the other hand, has been disappointing me beyond belief on the home console market ever since the Nintendo 64. Only the DS is keeping my affection for Nintendo at least on the handheld market alive...

I'm still not sold on the 360 even for that price. I would probably grab it if it was like the pro package but I doubt I'd play the damn thing. It's nice to see the prices becoming more reasonable. Now if the system reliability was just a bit higher.

To Darth Sidious:
It's been almost 2 years and you still want to rehash the "gamecube 1.5" argument. Grow up and just say "It doesn't appeal to me" and move on. One can easily 360 bash but there's no point since both consoles have different markets.

The Wii is fine, and it's proved itself to be more than a GC 1.5 as you claim. Sure there are a bunch of crap 3rd party games, but there are tons of fantastic 3rd party games as well. You just have to look or do any semblance of research. Also, the first party Nintendo games are always some of the best games you can find on any system.

This generation of games is definitely more about what type of games you want, because each system offers a drastically different variety of games. Wii is about something new and innovative and has the quality 1st party games you can always count on, 360 is a bit more casual with a wide variety of genres and fantastic online, and the PS3 is for hardcore gamers.  Pretty cool generation of systems if you ask me since all the systems have very different things they specialize in.

Wii vs Xbox 360 Arcade == tie
!neither has sufficient storage

Sweet now I can get an Arcade Edition to go with my Pro and Elite Editions.

Hmmm, I thought it was like that for quite some time in Europe. €199 for an Arcade and €239 (or something) for a Wii.

@Anyone: Is the Arcade 360 version suitable for normal non-online play or do you need to buy additional stuff?

@OatBob:
But the 360 arcade has better games by a long shot.

@Sirgin. The XBox 360 Arcade console is "acceptable" for non-online play. However, you will still need a storage device if you anticipate playing and saving most games. That means getting a hard drive. The memory unit's maximum storage is only 512mb.

I like the price drops. However, I think that the Wii has gotten so far ahead in its appeal to the casual (read: NEW) gamer that until these players become more savvy and hardcore in their TASTES for games, the price drops on the 360 versions won't likely be enough to motivate them to buy it as a 2nd console...no matter how good its library of games.

This news, I like.  is it enough for a "casual" gamer such as myself to go out and get one?  Not yet.  If either of the places I applied pan out and hire me, will it then?  Maybe not.  Lots of games to play catch up on for the 3 systems I do have that are still getting new releases.  Plus, it was never about it being cheaper then the wii for me, just that it be as reliable as the wii.

I want a 360 more than ever now.  I was an idiot and chose to get a Wii as my next-gen console (I was still a big Nintendo fanboy at the time...) and now nearly two years later I'm feeling the pain.  Unfortunately, even with these price drops, the 360 is still out of my financial reach.  I'd sell the Wii, but my family uses it and regardless I feel that I'll probably want it later... just like a couple of games I sold off years ago and have wanted to replace ever since.

I wish console prices started at $199 like they used to.  These huge numbers are ridiculous and keeps kids like me (one of their big markets) from getting their stuff.  If I want to have a decent 360 experience, I'll need $299 for the base console (getting the Arcade would be a stupid choice) + $120ish for two games to get me started + $50 or whatever it is for a year of Xbox Live + whatever the price of an extra controller is.  That's around $470, which is about $300 more than I have right now.  Sad

@Mr. Ksoft:I feel your pain. The consoles themselves aren't cheap and when counting everything else you need to get going properly, $470 isn't a surprise.

If money is limited for you, something you could consider is staying behind a generation (playing PS2-Xbox-Cube now) or atleast waiting another year or so to jump on board.

When you think about it: early adopters really spend loads of money for paying the latest and greatest compared to people waiting longer.

Decent price, don't think it will sell a significant amount of more units though.

If they could fix their reliability however...

Let me think.... I'm still not going to buy one. Cheesy

@Mr Ksoft: A lot of good games are dropping in price (under $30 ea)... Dead Rising, Crackdown, Forza 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Lost Planet, Assassin's Creed, the Orange Box, etc. So if you want a couple of games to start, unless they're brand new, you can get a couple for about $40-$60 (that saves you $60-$80). Also, controllers go on sale at $10 off from time to time at various retailers, you just need to check for their weekly sales.

So you're not as far off as you may think! Cool
