Being in a relatively small town and this being our first event, we decided that it would be best to make sure the operating costs were as low as possible so that our goals would be very obtainable. We wanted nothing more than to have a fun event that could be considered a success so that we could make it an annual event. With that in mind, we wanted to have at least 100 people attend the event at some point during the day and raise at least $2000 for the Child Development Center.
Long story short we exceed both of our goals. But you want the long story so click the link below........

The staff and administrators of RF Generation, would like to wish you all a safe and Happy New Year! Thank you so much for making 2015 such a great year for site contributions and we hope that you will continue to enjoy this service to the world-wide gaming community for years to come. Happy 2016 to all and let's make this upcoming year one to remember!
Though the season of giving is just behind us, don't pack away all of that joy just yet! Starting February 1, 2016, RF Generation will once again be conducting our annual donation drive in order to raise money for our site server. So you may ask yourself, why does RF Generation need money to continue and why should I donate? Well, as you know, RF Generation is a free, non-profit site for all members with no advertising or pop-ups. All database contributions come from our members and our staff (made up entirely of volunteers) works hard to provide user-friendly content and interesting articles and podcasts for everyone to enjoy. Unfortunately, the costs associated with running this site are not free (...or cheap) and we need YOUR help to keep our servers running through 2016. All donations go directly to our server account and our goal is to raise $1000 by February 29, 2016, which combined with donations from the previous year, will keep us going through 2016. In February, I will provide updates on the front page throughout the month to help monitor how close we are to obtaining our goal. We ask that you donate any amount you can, if you are able, since every dollar donated goes a long way in keeping us going. A link to our donation account will be provided closer to the beginning of the fundraiser start date.
Once again this year, our generous staff and friends will be donating some nice items to raffle off to donors. If you are interested in donating an item(s) to the raffle, send a PM to singlebanana. An explanation of the raffle rules and descriptions of the prize lots will be posted toward the end of January. Thank you for your consideration and let's do our best to give back to a site that has given many of us so much over the years.
Sincerely,
The Staff & Administrators at RF Generation

I am on record as proclaiming that Sin & Punishment: Star Successor on the Nintendo Wii to be an "objectively perfect" video game. The excitement and wonder of that game, as well as the motion and scale of the scenery, left me floored after playing it. I thought it would be a long time, if ever, before I found a game that combined the thrilling gameplay, amazing atmosphere, and grand scale of S&P in the same perfect mixture. I haven't had to search long, as I have just finished my first playthrough of Panzer Dragoon Orta for the original XBox.

As some of you may be aware, the first episode that we recorded for our podcast wasn't "Episode #1 - Phantasy Star & The Last of Us," but was instead, a pilot episode for February 2014's playthroughs of Parasite Eve and Kingdom Hearts. After coming up with the idea to do a podcast, we approached the "powers that be" about the idea and were asked to give them a sample of our proposed show. Since then, only the site administrators, a few friends who we got feedback from, and those of you who donated over $20 during the last fundraiser, have gotten to listen to the show. As a gift to all of our members here and listeners out there, we have decided to release this "Episode Zero" in full, with a new intro recorded by our very own GrayGhost81. I think you'll find it fun to go back and listen to how raw and inexperienced we were, and how much we have improved the show since our beginnings. I think you'll also enjoy the games discussion and maybe even decide to add one or both of them to your collection. Myself, Grayghost81, Fleach, and Disposed Hero would like to wish all of our members here at RF Generation a safe and happy holiday season! Thanks for listening and we hope you'll stick around for what promises to be an exciting 2016 of gaming.

We all have Christmas gaming stories. Many have two or three, some maybe more. Me, I have several, but the one that's been rolling around my noodle as of late happened back in good old 2001. Remember it? How about you and me sit for a bit, and we can exchange Christmas gaming stories, okay? Great.

Image source: imgarcade gallery for Frictional Games (SOMA) Lists. Everybody loves lists. And subjective numbers attached to opinions. Fun to read and argue over, sure. But here at RFGeneration, we're cooler than that. (And more humble!) So here I'm gonna list some games that aren't necessarily GOTY-type stuff (though some are, certainly.) But if you're like me, then I'm glad my beloved wife met me first, and also you like to dig through articles to find random gems you weren't aware of or some thoughts on a game that may make you give it a chance instead of otherwise dismissing it. So here goes, a slackur's suggestions from the last year of gaming good times.

Sorry guys, you won't be getting a Top Games of 2015 list from me. For one, I don't own a current generation console to play games released this year on, and secondly, my list of my favorite games I played it 2015 will be available early next year when you listen to the RF Generation Playcast (http://rfgenplaycast.podbean.com/) .....shameless plug!! Instead, I'll be focusing on a topic that has baffled and frustrated me (and probably you) for years and that is, "What import games can I play on my North American consoles without having to import systems?" I certainly won't be able to cover every system, but I'll try to cover the more well-known and most-owned consoles. I understand that some imported games can be burned or pirated for play on North American systems; however, since this method is frowned upon by a large majority of the community, I will not be covering or suggesting this method for any system here. I hope many of you will find this article useful and please think of it and my research as my holiday gift to you!
**DISCLAIMER: Please be advised that I have not tried several of these methods myself and that the great majority of the information that I have assembled here has been compiled through research. I have verified as much of the information as possible, but some of it may be incorrect. If you find that something is incorrect, please send me a PM and I can verify and edit this post. Thank you!**

Another year ends, and another Top 10 lists needs to be assembled. I have to admit that this was kind of a weird year for me as far as new games went. There were actually a lot of unexpected disappointments really. I loved Wolfenstein: The New Order last year, but couldn't enjoy The Old Blood this year. I loved Shovel Knight last year, but the Plague expansion did nothing for me. Ori and the Blind Forest and Mortal Kombat X come to mind as well as let-downs. I also played a lot of indie games that just didn't leave a lasting impression.
The other weird thing is that this was a huge year for independent Dreamcast releases and a bunch of them were released in the latter part of the year. While many of these are either on their way to me now or still on my want-list, I unfortunately didn't get to play all of them. So for all I know, this list could have or would have changed by the time the year officially rolls to an end. I guess you could say that about any list of favorites: it's always going to be in-flux. But as of right now, at this very moment, as the words pour out from my fingers, these were my favorite games of the year. The top half feels really solid to me - the best of the best, but strangely, the lower half feels like games that were 'just good enough' to make it onto the list.

When was the last time you had an impulse purchase completely surprise you? Our game today is one of those for me. Fairy Fencer F is a turn-based RPG developed for Sony's Playstation 3 and Microsoft Windows. I initially had some doubts, since I saw the game was developed by many of the same companies behind the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. To be fair, I've only played the first Neptunia game, and it was a real chore. You can check out my review of that game here: http://www.rfgeneration.c...mension-Neptunia-2957.php.
Once I started playing Fairy Fencer F, I noticed that some monster designs looked different from what I saw in Neptunia, but many looked quite familiar. In addition to Idea Factory's character designer, Tsunako, they managed to add an extremely familiar name to character design for classic RPG fans, Yoshitaka Amano. I'm sure he was brought in for the male characters and monsters, since the two leading ladies look like Neptunia rejects. Meanwhile, Fang looks like Squall and Sora's love child. He's not the only one who was added to Idea Factory's staff for this project, and he's not the only one from the series we all know him for. The original Final Fantasy composer also joined the team. That's right, Nobuo Uematsu composed some songs and had his band, the Earthbound Papas, record them and a few others for the soundtrack. Most of the music was done by the existing in house musicians, but its all good to listen to and fits with the game and characters quite well.

It's hard to believe that another year of awesome retro and modern playthroughs are in the books. Myself, Grayghost81, Fleach, and Disposed Hero would like to thank all of you who participated in the playthroughs this year for your time, effort, and wonderful comments in the threads. In 2016, we hope to increase participation for our playthroughs and offer the community many more exciting games to play along with us. If you have listened to the newest episode of the RF Generation Playcast, you already know about the upcoming changes to the playthroughs. However, for those of you who have not, we'd like to take this time to let you know about the new direction in which we are headed.
This upcoming year, we plan to do away with the retro and modern playthroughs and instead focus on one playthrough a month. This decision was made because (1) we felt like members were having to choose between the two games each month and it was spreading participation very thin, and (2) the four of us really missed playing games together and talking about them on the podcast. We think that this change will bring a better product to the community by increasing dialogue about these games in our thread, and make for a more enjoyable, in-depth, and shorter listen for our podcast followers. Going forward, we will also only announce one game at a time at the beginning of each prior month, instead of three games in advance. This should give members plenty of time to locate games if needed, prevent them from forgetting about upcoming playthroughs over time, and provide something for participants to look forward to each month. We are looking forward to these changes and we hope that all of you will continue to be a big part of it.
Now............what you're all here to read about, the January game announcement!
In January, we want to start things off BIG by playing two "blockbuster" games from a very familiar series. Next months playthrough includes what many consider the best and most iconic game on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Mario Bros. 3. We will also be playing the follow-up game in the series, Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System; this title is hands down, one of the Top 10 games released on the SNES and at the time, was successful in transitioning the series onto the modern system. Which game do you like better? Which one will we like better? Will time and nostalgia prevail, or will this playthrough open our minds to other possibilities? Join us as we foil the plans of and take down the sinister King Bowser, and rescue the beloved Princess Peach in these Super Mario classics!!

Image shamelessly linked from Adventure Amigos. "I choose" the realistic offensive strategies, but the defensive strategies are tough - does that mean they're not realistic? Or are they both tough AND realistic? Can the game possibly live up to this box art? I must begin this review with a bit of history, nostalgia, and a confession. As I write this, I'm reeling from the news that the Kansas City Royals, long the proverbial butt of many a baseball joke, have won the World Series against the New York Mets. Though I don't consider myself a sports fan, I got a little bit of whiplash with that announcement, and had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't 1985 again. I was a fan of baseball for many years, as a kid, until the player strike brought the ugly realization that athletes can often be petty, whining oafs that are just money hungry. Granted, they're not all like that, but the strike certainly gave me a new perspective on things. So while my love for baseball lasted a number of years, my interest in professional football was relatively short-lived. In 1985 and 1986, I fancied myself a pro football fan, if only to impress my classmates and the neighbor kids, who all thought I was a giant dork (spoiler alert: I was). I told people I was into the Dolphins and the Bengals, and that Dan Marino was pretty much the best quarterback on the planet. Of course, I never really watched any football games, because we had 1 TV in the house, my parents weren't into pro football, and none of my friends invited me over to watch with them. Subsequently, my neighborhood kids (and kids at school) saw through my petty charade. Yes, I was destined to be a nerd.
