Now its been overdue for a nice nostalgia trip. Playing Saturn games was nice for a spell. I remember seeing the games on a shelf as a wee lad, and had no idea what the system was but thinking the big cases were the coolest thing I had ever laid eyes on. I did not know anybody with a Saturn though. I did know multiple people with a Sega Genesis though, and one of them had our game today, General Chaos. General Chaos was developed by Game Refuge Inc. and published by Electronic Arts.

Are you tired of hearing opinions on E3 yet? Well too bad, because we're here to chime in as well. We talk about the major pressers, what we think about the upcoming games, and the things we are looking forward to. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, EA, and Ubisoft all get some time with us, and maybe some of the games we discuss will even come out this year.

Who do we think did the best job? Did we get it right or wrong? Let us know!

How has the summer been treating everyone? Sure, you can head to the beach and work on your tans, but why not join your friends here at RF Generation for some quality gaming?

Last month we had the special honour to play Suikoden on the PSX and Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2. All of the Playthrough hosts want to thank all of the participants to playing and completing two very heavy games.

July's retro side sees the RPG train steadily rolling on with the essential, and classic gamer favourite, Chrono Trigger. Considering the various platform supporting this game, how could we avoid this masterpiece?

Over on modern generation, if you're tired of the same old traditional gameplay and are looking for something that defies genre placement, then this month's Modern Community Playthrough is for you! We'll start off on our creative foot with an ongoing multiplayer experience in Minecraft where you can build anything you want on your own or with other RFGeneration members throughout the month, or just try to survive. Week 2 will be a mysterious game called Gone Home from The Fullbright Company. In week 3 we'll tackle the hilarious puzzle(?) game, The Stanley Parable. Dear Esther will finish it off, a very poetic and moving story told through a video game. Enjoy all these PC/Mac indie titles with the community this July!

There you have it! Classic JRPG greatness and current Indie Game hits. See you all in the discussions.

Posted under Site News, Birthday, Anniversary, 10 years, 10 freaking years, seriously that is a long time, Contest, Winners

Did you know our annual PAIN YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS contest ended already? Apparently, it ended almost two weeks ago. And I apologize its taken me so long to get this written up, but its just been hard to find the time to give this the full attention it deserves (more on that later).
Enough of my rambling, lets get down to business and announce those winners! We'll start off with the winner of the donation drive. And that winner is YOU! Because everyone wins when someone donates, without those crucial donations, we literally can not exist. Even though we are non-profit, our server host is most definitely not. But I did offer a prize to the individual donated the most during our donation drive, and the winner of that prize is none other than Razor Knuckles, who donated an astounding amount, more than anyone since I've been in charge of the finances around here at least. I won't disclose here how much exactly he donated, I'll let him do that if he so wishes.
And of course, there's the matter of who won the PAIN YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS contest. The winner of that contest is our very own Not-So-Secret Santa, Zagnorch! He not only won the submissions contest, he destroyed the contest, raking in more than twice as many points as the second place member, Flee. Who, in turn, got more than twice as many points as third place ae.tc. Good job guys, you kicked butt this year. And a big thanks to everyone who participated in the contest, you're all winners in my book.

As for the prizes, as it turns out, its a little harder to come by a pair of 1990 NWC carts than I thought, so I'll have to make a little substitution to the prizes for our two winners. Luckily, I never mentioned specifically which gold colored NES cart would be the prize, so no harm no foul, right? So Mr. Zagnorch and Mr. Knuckles, send me a PM with your address and your prizes will be on their way as soon as possible.

And finally, I have one more little announcement. After nearly 5 years, I will be stepping down as Site Director of RFGeneration. Now, it has nothing to do with an affair, scandal, or anything like that. My life has just become too busy for me to make this site a priority, and that's what it needs to be for a Director. So rather than just stick around making people wait on my response to things, I'm simply taking myself out of the equation so the remaining Directors can efficiently keep the site running. Now, I won't be leaving completely, I'll still be around on occasion, just on more of an unofficial capacity. In lieu of a retirement gift, you can make a donation to webmaster@rfgeneration.com

Magic Knight Rayearth is an action/adventure based on a popular manga and anime series of the same name. Come to the Sega Saturn where we get going back down the Working Designs road!

Working Designs and Sega had quite a close relationship at first. Sega could make some money by licensing the rights to a game out to Working Designs that they themselves did not want to localize and release. Looking at the lineup of Working Designs Saturn games a staggering 4 of their 6 games for the Saturn were actually developed by Sega (5 if you count Camelot's Shining Wisdom since the company was founded by Sega, but they had broken away from them the same year it was released in Japan) including our game this week.

Posted under Site News, RFG Thanks, Thank You, Thanks, 2014, May, Donation Drive Update, We are poor and need money

First off, I want to give a big "Thank You" to the 9 members who have taken the time to donate money to the site during our annual donation drive. So Thank You Tadpole13, Razor Knuckles, Raidou, Nupoile, Zagnorch, OatBob, and Wempster. Together you guys have raised over $600 to keep the site running. And unless someone tops your donation in the next couple days, you'll be receiving an ultra-rare gold colored NES game. If you're not one of these fine gentlemen, and want to help keep the site alive, you can send a PayPal donation to webmaster@rfgeneration.com or just click the little Donate icon at the bottom of this article. Either way, your contribution is only used for paying the hosting bill around here, which is around $100 each and every month. If you don't know how much to donate, donate whatever you can, whether its $5 or $5000, every little bit helps. But for reference, the average donation amount this year has been $77.21. I'm not saying you must donate that much, but if you want to conform to the standard, you probably should.

And of course, I must thank all of you out there that are PAINING YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS! In may, the most PAINED WITH SUBMISSIONS member was Zagnorch, with 2190 submissions. Next was ApolloBoy with over 1000 submissions, and each with over 500 submissions were Flee, MrMeek, Aeroc, and ae.tc. Thanks guys, you are obviously taking this competition seriously, and you should be. One of you is likely to walk away with another copy of that super-rare gold colored NES game.
If your name isn't listed here, don't worry, you can still win this thing. But you better get your butt moving, Zagnorch really wants that game, and you wouldn't want him to get it would you?

But don't forget about those poor souls who tirelessly sift through all those submissions to find the ones that are worthy of approving into the database. Without them, we'd have a database full of incorrect information and stolen images. May's biggest Approver was Shadow Kisuragi with an astounding 3468 approvals and who knows how many rejections. Next up was Tynstar with just shy of 1000, and ApolloBoy with 733. Thanks guys, you have been doing an awesome job at keeping that queue down this year, I only saw it above 100 once this year.

Thanks to everyone else who has contributed in May and during our annual contest so far. It really is true that every little bit helps. Whether its a page edit to fix a typo or a donation of $500, we truly appreciate it all.

Click the button, you know you want to.

In order to spice things up a little for summer, the playthrough teams have decided to switch hosting roles for the next two months and host games for their counterparts. This month GrayGhost81 will turn the wheel of time back a little further and host the Retro Playthrough, and I (singlebanana) will try my hand at hosting a more modern game (though of course, not TOO modern Wink ).  For June, we have picked two very exciting and revered titles on the Playstation and Playstation 2. So without further adieu, here are your playthrough titles for June:

This month, play as the son of famous general Teo McDeol,  and lead a ragtag rebel army against the evil empire in the original Suikoden on the Sony Playstation. Travel across a vast land while trying to recruit the 108 Stars of Destiny to your cause. Experience one of the deepest stories and meet some of the most interesting characters in video game history. What looks like a traditional turn-based JRPG at first is sure to surprise you with its depth and sweeping scope. So please, join us in playing Suikoden for the June retro playthrough. Suikoden is available on the PSX, as well as the PSN.

Link to Suikoden discussion thread: http://www.rfgeneration.c...m/index.php?topic=14016.0

In June's modern playthrough, you (Wander) make a deal with a mysterious being, known as Dormin, to travel across vast lands to slay 16 colossal monstrosities in hopes of resurrecting a deceased lady named Mono. Armed with only a legendary sword and your trusty bow, you must scale these giants and exploit their weaknesses to bring them crashing to their knees.....or wings, as the case may be. Shadow of the Colossus is not your typical action/adventure game, but also has strong puzzle elements. Each colossi requires a different strategy and means to defeat it; often times, you have to exploit parts of the environment to earn a victory. What fate befalls our hero after slaying all 16 colossi? Join us and find out. Shadow of the Colossus is available on the PS2 and on the PS3 as a combo pack with Ico.

We are very excited about this month's choices and hope that many of you will join in!

In this episode the collector talk gets serious, as Crabmaster returns to help us dig deep into collecting and completing sets and subsets. Why do people go for complete sets? Who decides what makes a set complete? Once a set is completed, what next? We go deep into the rabbit hole to explore what makes collecting sets appealing. Did we get it right? Be sure to chime in and let us know.

With the time constraints of a newborn for two of us and two jobs for the other, the small scores didn't make it in this show. We hope that we'll be able to get back to this piece that some of you enjoy so much as soon as we can. You've all be coming up with amazing items, and we wish we could highlight them all.

Posted under Thank you, Community, Fireside chat

Just over 5 years ago, I wrote a small blog post thanking the community. It may not have been seen by many that are here currently, but I was just thinking about it tonight. Here's the contents of that blog post.

"Over the years, gaming has gone from a sort of niche hobby to a full-blown, mainstream activity. I seen gaming go from an activity that only a few of my friends growing up did to dorm room gaming to my 1080p, 5.1 audio setup at home. The first community I was a fairly active member of was the GameFAQs forum. Did the collection on IGN, tried out Digital Press forums before finding my way here. I lurked for a while, primarily using only the Collection tools. I finally started posting more and more, and the people here are extremely nice and really my kind of people. Then came the chat.

I jumped in, and as the new guy, I sort of found it difficult to jump in. After 2-3 times (that I could tell), I felt like I was starting to feel as a part of the group. I am now on a first name basis with pretty much everyone in chat. This type of small community is what I need. I grew up in a small town, and that's the sort of vibe I get here. These people are RFGeneration, down to the roots.

I'm very thankful for this place. It's kind of hard for someone like me to put myself out there and jump into conversation, but when I did, I wish I would have sooner. I plan on sticking around for a long time and I really hope that the community grows while keeping the roots of the small site. I consider all of you my friends and hope to meet many more of you along the way.

Thank you."

I re-read that when I was thinking of it and I still feel it is relevant, even 5 years later.

It's been quite a ride since then. Personally, I have gone through ups and downs. Trouble at work. A minor bout with depression. A new job. And now my family is going to be getting bigger in a few months. I'm now selling and trading more of my collection off rather than hoarding every single thing. The site has gone through some issues and come through very strong after each of them.

This site has been a huge part of me. Despite the fact that I haven't been posting as much as of late, I still stop in to threads as I can. I've gained more and more friends. I started and gradually wound down a podcast only for another team to jump in and step in with their take in a huge way! We have an app!

I went from a user and the occasional (non-staff) contributor on the blogs and database to a director.

We had 3 years of forum posts that were gone... Thought the whole thing was going to be lost. But it's always come back. We had months of nagging server issues from speed to just plain failures. But we're back on a blazing server.

I know, it's not the standard "Thanks" blog post, but I really felt that I needed to let every single member know that as long as I'm here, I'll try everything I can to ensure that this site stays up and running. It's not for me (well, not all for me). It's for everyone that uses this site. It's for the community of RF Generation and for video games in general.

But I can't nor don't do it by myself. There is an excellent group of people on staff that take what they do seriously. There are plenty of users who submit data on new games and old, pictures and screenshots, to try to document everything that we can on a game or hardware.

So, this is to everyone. Thank you all for continuing to make RF Generation the best site on the web.

Just in case you missed the announcement on the playthrough forums, we wanted to ensure that all of our members here at RFGeneration were aware of a new and exciting feature we have added to our monthly playthroughs.

After some discussion amongst the playthrough hosts, we decided that it would be a lot of fun to create a podcast to discuss the games that we played the previous month. Our hope is that our discussion will further facilitate discussion on the forums and increase community participation. The four playthrough hosts will discuss the games we all played together in a casual group review, discuss some of your posts on the playthrough forums, and from time-to-time, may ask some of you to come onto the show and discuss these games with us. We anticipate that each episode will be released within 3-5 weeks after the monthly playthroughs are finished, so expect every episode to lag behind the current playthroughs by about a month or so.

Again, we are really looking forward to adding something fun and interactive to this community and hope that you will listen in and provide us with some constructive feedback to make our show better. Thank you.

April database submissions bring May congratulations!

Last month you guys made a total of 3279 updates to RF Generation's database which comprised of 3154 game submissions and 125 hardware submissions.

It's also clear how much RF Gen members love pictures because 769 images were added to our database.

In April six members surpassed 100 submissions. ae.tc made 284 database entries and Raidou contributed 111 additions. The other four to add over 100 submissions were staff members: ApolloBoy (966), Shadow Kisuragi (540), Flee (440), and CoinCollector (176). Honorable mentions last month go to Sauza12 with 93 entries and Zagnorch with 92 entries. Way to go!

The top 5 image submitters for April were: ae.tc (171), Raidou (98), Flee (93), Sauza12 (77), and Zagnorch (77).

Great work everyone!

Thanks again for continuing the improve the rapidly growing database and getting involved in this supportive community! Everyone deserve a round of applause!

Posted under Site News, Birthday, Anniversary, 10 years, 10 freaking years, seriously that is a long time

April 28th, 2004, do you remember where you were? I was a sophomore in High School, if you're just old enough to be a member of the site, you may have still been pooping your pants. But if you were Michael Collins, Mark Hartholt, Eddie Herrmann, Laurel Settee, Mike Leon, or Rick Kuethe, you were giving birth to the THE Classic and Modern Video Game Database, better known as RFGeneration. Yes, that's right, today marks the 10th anniversary of this wonderful little site.

A lot has happened in the last ten years here at RFGeneration, we've gone from a meager little database with a couple thousand entries to one with over 86,000 software entries alone (which means we're averaging about 25 new entries every day) and more than 150,000 images. Yes, you read that right, one-hundred and fifty-thousand images. If you printed all those images out at 4"x6", they'd stretch out over 85 miles. Unless my math is wrong, which it probably is, nobody double-check it. If that doesn't impress you, then think about this, between all the collectors on this site, we own over a million games and hardware pieces (though I think Slackur throws off the average since he owns about half of that).

As most of you know, we have a little tradition here at RFGeneration, one where instead of you giving us gifts, we give them to you! Yes, that's right, its time for the PAIN YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS contest, where you give us many, many submissions and you can win cool prizes. So I guess you do give us stuff after all, but those submissions are what sustain us. Without any new submissions, the gerbil running on the wheel that powers the site gets bored and starts to think too much about what his role in the universe is, and any time that happens, the site crashes and nobody wants that to happen again.

So, here's how it works. From the time this article posts (April 28th) until June 8th, you make as many submissions as humanly possible, maybe more if you want to hire a couple of immigrant workers to crop your scans for you. Our poor database staff reviews an absurd number of submissions 24 hours a day, and at the end of it all, one of you gets a sweet prize package. And we really do give you a good prize, not just a pencil eraser and a sticker like those fundraisers you did in Elementary school. You get your choice of $60 worth of gaming goodness, basically, you go on a shopping spree on GameGavel, eBay, or Amazon and we'll pick up the tab, as long as it doesn't exceed $60 and its gaming related. Maybe it that new PS4 game you want, or maybe 6 classic NES games, or 120 copies of Pac-Man on the Atari VCS, we won't judge you. And of course, so you can be coolest kid on the block, you also get an official RFGeneration Ringer T-shirt. And new for this year, you can win one of the rarest and most sought after NES games ever made. I can't tell you what the title is just yet, for if I told you, it will surely cause too many people to go crazy making submissions. But I will give you a hint that its shiny and gold colored and its not The Legend of Zelda.

That's the gist of it anyway, the details are a bit more complex.

Here's how the point breakdown will work:
  Title Addition: 5 Points
   Variation Addition: 6 Points
   Page Edit*: 2 Points
   Review*: 50 Points
   Overview*: 20 Points
   Image Upload: 10 Points
   Submission Review**: 1 Point
   Blog Post*: 30 Points
   Blog Comment: 1 Point
   Forum Post: 1 Point
   Forum Karma: See Explanation

*Regarding the asterisk: For page edits, if it is noticed that you are consistently only adding one field per edit multiple times for a single title just to up your points, you will be disqualified. Any review or overview completed will count as a page edit as well the points for an overview or review. To get the points for an overview or review you MUST contact me via Personal Message so that I can keep a tally. In addition, the review or overview must be on the actual game / hardware page. A review or overview of poor quality could result in less points than stated being granted. The same statement holds true for blog posts.

Regarding Forum Karma: Because we want the forum to be a lively place of fun and interesting posts, we're enabling Karma during this contest. Karma rewards members that make good posts and smites those who do not. Your Karma will play a wildcard role in posts. Positive Karma at the end of the contest will increase your point total by a factor, while negative karma will decrease it.

As with any contest, there is fine print. Any submission that you make must adhere to the RF Generation Policies and Guidelines. We wrote these policies and guidelines for a reason, and well, we'd like everyone to adhere to them. Failure to adhere to the guidelines could result in a disqualification.

Any point reduction or disqualification can be contested. In the event that you wish to contest, you must explain why the reduction or disqualification is unfair. If you win the contest, we'll restore your greatness, but if you lose, you shall be pelted with figurative rocks and garbage.

Everyone, except for the directors of this site, is in this contest. Because staff members get that extra point for each submission review, and those staff members will have thousands of submissions to review in addition to their own submissions, their total score will be halved to make things a bit more fair and lively.

Now before you go and warm that scanner up, I have one more thing to mention, and it also involves a prize, so you better read it, and I'll know if you don't. As most of you probably noticed, a couple months ago, our site performance was pretty bad, in fact it was slower than a turtle in a molasses factory. It took a lot of work from our awesome staff to get things not just working again but working better than ever before. You see, what happened is that our members over these past 10 years have been so awesome that we simply had more information than our host could handle. We were breaking hard drives left and right. They'd give us a new one and you guys had it filled up within a couple days. So we had to cut that host loose and find a new one, one that could handle our awesomeness. One that could keep up with our growth now and in the future. But of course, with all this power comes the downside, and that is that it costs money to keep the lights on. Luckily, it's not terribly more expensive than our old host, but we still need to call on our members to get those billed paid. Most of you know that we generally have an annual donation drive around Thanksgiving/Christmas, but I didn't feel right asking for any money while the site was running as poorly as it was during that time. So now that's running properly, I'm asking for money to keep the site alive.

We're not a greedy bunch here, we'll gladly accept any donation amount you wish to give, if you've never donated before and aren't sure, just donate $1, it really does help. Or if you're feeling more generous, a $5 donation is great too. And $20 is phenomenal, any more than that, and you're just being a show-off (which by the way, we love show-offs).

So what do you get for donating? Well, first and foremost, you become a part of the elite group that helps to keep this site alive financially, without donors, we would simply not exist. Secondly, you get access to the top secret section of the forum created just for donors. You'll also notice that we don't have any ads anywhere on the site, if you have AdBlocker, disable it for a moment and you'll notice nothing changes, that's because we really don't have ads, even little ones. And trust me, we get offers from companies that sell ads on a regular basis since we're probably the last site to not have any ads. Your donations are what keeps me deleting those emails and this site ad-free.

And lastly, if you donate from now until June 8th, you'll have the chance to win a prize. For the person who donates the largest total amount in that time period, you will get another copy of the same game the PAIN YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS contest winner will receive. That's right, we're not only giving away one copy of one of the rarest NES games ever made, but two. You can either win one by making a ton of submissions, or just give a bunch of money, or go for both and give one away for Christmas next year.
