In the spirit of my "The Best System Ever" series, we, as a community, will choose the BEST video game character... EVER!!! "But, there are so many," one might say... Well, this is where the blog comes in.

YOU! The reader! You will submit 2 Nominations via the Comment box for the "Best of the Best" Poll/Tournament. You will say the character's name, the game or games that they are in (or the series, ie Final Fantasy), and submit. Done! Hopefully, everyone's nomination can get in, provided that we have at least a few duplicates (hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge). Then, rounds will consist of 2 or 4 characters each, depending on the number originally submitted. The poll will progress to the next round after 5 days. Each character that is in a specific poll on a specific day will also be paired with a bio. This bio will have information on the character, as well as a picture, etc.

Now, the clincher; I'm giving you, the reader, the ability to submit a bio to be included in the polls. Granted, it will probably be cut down and reformatted, but you will receive credit, and lot's of it. I do this to cut down on time out of my studies. Tongue Not all bios will need to be submitted, but if people are in a writing mood, then you can shoot me a PM with a bio in it on a specific character that is in any given poll. This will make the poll run a lot smoother, and it gets your name put out there! What a snazzy idea, right?! nod

So, to push the snowball down the hill, my two picks are... (drumroll):

-Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog series)

and

-Mario (Mario series).

Let's see those Nominations people, and may the best man (or rather, character) win!

Oh, you took my nominations. Oh well, I guess there are other characters out there I can choose.
I'll nominate Conker from Conker's Bad Fur Day and Funky Kong from the Donkey Kong Country series and Donkey Kong 64.

Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero
:-P

Godot (Phoenix Wright 3)
Joshua (The World Ends With You)

Elvis (Perfect Dark)
Olimar (Pikmin series)

Link (Zelda Series)

Pitfall Harry (Pitfall Series)

Pokey (Mother series)
The Prince (Katamari series)

These are some great ones!! Keep 'em commin'!

Link (Zelda)
Albert Wesker (Resident Evil)

Locke Cole (& Celes Chere) from Final Fantasy 6 - I know you said character, but allow me to explain as I'll explain my other nomination. All of the Final Fantasy VI cast really deserves a nomination but I feel these two (one) really deserve a nomination for their story in a time when video games were still considered "For kids." Locke in particular deserves particular mention because his past is so tragic. Again - I really want people to keep in mind that Final Fantasy VI has one of the best stories ever, but it was out at a time when Sonic and Mario were the most popular and really rose the bar of the medium. Locke is a character forced to know that through his lifestyle that the love of his life not only lost her memory which caused Locke to leave, but through his absence was killed by the Empire and regained her memory only at that point.  Stuff that powerful and poignant didn't really exist at that time.

More importantly, he shares one of the most touching scenes in all video game history between himself and Celes, who also was the first video game character I remember that explored suicide as a theme which in itself makes her a compelling character (Hence why I included her as apart of the choice.) I know many people list Aeris' death as the most touching scene in video game history, but I honestly think this romance scene is even better and if you weren't moved by it, you just might be inhuman. It accomplishes  more for a believable and true romance (without throwing it in your face) than any other game I've played and does it through text, sprites, and midi music. No voice overs, not super fancy graphics that show pores at 1005356346 bits, not a symphony hall soundtrack. That is power of character and why I nominate Locke as the best character ever.

Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Series - Solid Snake began his career on the NES as a pretty straight laced character without a super amount of characterization. He started as a man's man. A soldier. Someone we expect to see on any Saturday Night Action movie. However, Snake evolves. Throughout any video game series, I can't think of one character from the top of my head who has been through as many changes, through as much character development as Snake. He is betrayed by his mentor only to later find out it's his father. He's betrayed by one of his best friends, almost killing him in the process only to later have both of them find forgiveness in each other. He discovers a plot that places him almost as a mere pawn. He discovers he's not human like you or me and because of that he's sentenced to a premature death, but throughout it all, he does his duty because it's first and foremost to his character.  Snake is one of the most paramount characters within the industry because he's no mere character, he's an icon for all the RIGHT reasons and it isn't because of "huge boobs" or "super marine armor and guns" that make him great. It's because he's endearing and feels human.

Mega Man and Samus Aran.

Can't believe nobody nominated them.

Solid Snake

Gene, God Hand

Ryu from the Street fighter series and

Ms. Pac-man

Niko Bellic
&
Link

Solid Snake (Metal Gear series)
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider series)

Solid Snake, for all the reasons Wolfman Walt mentioned

Sonic the Hedgehog, for the fact he's not Mario

Max Payne (Max Payne series)
The Prince (Katamari series)

Firebrand (Gargoyle's Quest series, Demon's Crest, Ghosts 'n Goblins series)

Raziel (Legacy of Kain series)

Its so hard to pick only 2

Vivi (Final Fantasy IX)
KOS-MOS (Xenosaga I,II,III)

I'd just like to mention
The Wanderer (Shadow of the Colussus)
as an honorable mention and hope it reminds someone to add him to the poll.

@BadEnoughDude: I think a lot of us would rather see our personal favorites in the contest rather than super popular (but still good) characters.

On a side note I wish I could nominate more so I could nominate Vyse and Ramirez.

@ga5ket:

@BadEnoughDude:
My cuz would have nominated Samus and Link probably. Then again i could be wrong about link. Megaman though? Whats he done thats so great Pffffttt :-P

@Shimra:

I'm going to put a final deadline on this: 2 hours, 5 minutes to get your final nominations in.

And Voting is CLOSED! Thanks for everyone who voted!!! You'll see a blog post with all the pairing appear within a few days.

Sonic the Hedgehog. Remember his impact on the gaming industry. If you don't, you need to buy a pair of Sonic underwear.

Sparkster. I can't believe no one nominated him at all. He would've been awesome on brawl with his jetpack and sword. If only I voted before it closed. Oh well, at least I got my two cents down. Smiley

@Sirgin:Oops, of course my first nominee was Solid Snake, not Solid Sname. Tongue

Sonic (sonic the hedgehog)-More Kids knew who he was in the early 90's than Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Thats hard to top

Vectorman (vectorman series)- Great games, cool dude sounds like a winner to me

@Sirgin: too late! you spelled it wrong :p
