Current version is v2.7, released on February 17th, 2016.

Android? What's that?
Android is a plucky little mobile operating system available only on the T-Mobile G1... Wait, we didn't actually go back in time to March 2009? Oh, right. Android is the most popular smartphone operating system and this is an application to make accessing the site easier on it.

What does the app do?
- Syncs your entire collection to your Android device in seconds.
- Searches the site's massive game database as well as your own collection.
- Views basic game information and images
- Add and delete games to/from your collection

What will it do in the future?
Now that 2.0 is out, I'm planning on adding lots of features at a much quicker pace. My next priority is an overhaul of the game detail pages, including the ability to add games to your collection from within the app.

Here are some general concepts that are on my roadmap for future releases:
- Collection statistics, like on your profile page
- Advanced search options
- Collection filtering options
- Ability to view more game information fields
- Blog reader
- Tablet support

Please let me know if you've got a request for a feature I haven't thought of, or if you want me to give a higher priority to a specific feature I've got listed.

Are there any known issues?
Not really! Report em if you got em.
- Having a decimal place in a game/box/manual quantity will crash the app. Fixed in 2.1!
- Using different capitalization on your username may cause things to act funky. Fixed in 2.4!

If you're having an issue, please post in the thread or send an e-mail and let me know.

Any plans for Android tablets?
It's far off on the roadmap, but yes, tablet support should be doable. I don't have an Android tablet myself, but by the time I get to it, there should be a decent build out for my HP Touchpad that I could install to test it with.

This looks awesome, but I don't have an Android phone! Can you make this for iOS?
Sorry, I don't have any iStuff, so at the moment I cannot. I won't say never, as mobile application development is clearly an interest of mine, and maybe someday I'll get a cute little Mac Mini to run xcode on, but that'd be quite a ways off in the horizon. If you'd like to make one, go right ahead!

As for other platforms, Shadow Kisuragi has expressed some interest in making a WP7 app, but he may be the only one that actually owns a Windows Phone.

Finally, what's this thread for?
A little bit of everything, really. Report bugs, request features, whatever. I'll try to bump it with a development update whenever I make some significant progress, as well as to announce official releases. Major releases will also get an announcement post in my blog, in the case that the site admins want to bump them to the front page. ;D

With the site being back, the app works again.

How do I feel about this?

Ha, thanks bickman!

So I pushed out an update last week and never really made a post about it! Version 2.0 is taking a bit longer than I expected, I'm amazed at how much more there still is out there that I've had to learn. So I re-visited the 1.0 branch to make some improvements here and there. The "Now Loading" screens that keep you from hitting the back button are gone, a progress spinner appears in the header instead. I also made paging through the collection a bit quicker, the Prev/Next buttons no longer wait until loading's completed in order to show up. Finally, I enabled the "fast scroll" feature on all the lists, so when you start scrolling, a little bar you can grab appears and you can scroll faster. You've probably seen it in other apps already.

As far as 2.0 goes, I'm working on the last major hurdle: a service that runs in the background that handles downloading updates to your collection. Since I know some users like the guy above me have enormous collections, I need it to be able to run in the background for a long time to process everything, and a background service is the way to achieve that. I got most of it done today, hopefully I can finish it up tomorrow. After that, the only thing I think I have left to port over are the filtering options and game detail pages. I'm not planning any major overhauls to those (yet), so that should hopefully be quick. Thanks for being patient, everybody!

This is becoming a simply amazing app.

Will you be implementing the rating logos (images for the ratings) that have recently been added? They do look cool.

I'll certainly have to look in to it! Now that I'm a "programmer" on the site, I'm hoping to be able to put a few invisible "hooks" into the game detail pages to make it so the app can parse the detail more easily. Once that's in place, the game detail view will be in for a total overhaul to bring it up to the level of those on the site.

Great work, screenshots look great!

I vote for a Windows Phone 7 version too. Would be great to have this handy tool on the flea markets.

There are multiple people on the site here with a Windows Phone 7. Besides myself, there's Izret101 and Tynstar that I know of. It's something that's on the backburner for me though, considering some of the site changes I need to do.

So given the theme of the site today, how about an update?

Version 2.0 is almost ready! Yaaay!

I posted some teaser screens a long time ago before the forums got warped back in time, so let's run through the key differences again:

[img width=180 height=300]http://i.imgur.com/ktWeQ.png[/img] (http://imgur.com/ktWeQ)[img width=180 height=300]http://i.imgur.com/7Zkb0.png[/img] (http://imgur.com/7Zkb0)[img width=180 height=300]http://i.imgur.com/9cddG.png[/img] (http://imgur.com/9cddG)[img width=180 height=300]http://i.imgur.com/Nho4x.png[/img] (http://imgur.com/Nho4x)

First off, you'll be greeted with a new login screen. Don't worry, I'm not saving your password, just using it to get to your login cookie! Once I've got that, I can perform any function in the app that would require you to be logged in to the website, such as downloading your entire collection rather than browsing through it page by page.

On your first login, the "My Folders" section will be blank for a second, but then you should see the information start to trickle in very quickly. My folder names showed up within seconds, then each one started to get populated with games. I'll admit I was on WiFi, but the time from logging in to loading all ~800 games in my collection was... 8 seconds! Hopefully that scales well to our users with even bigger collections. :)

From here, you can click on any folder, including the "All" and "Owned" parent folders. The third screenshot shows the "All Folders" view in action, mid-scroll. Grabbing the fast scroll bar on the right will use alphabetical "hints" to help you drill down into your collection quickly. And as you can see in the background, most of these are games from my Collection folder, but an occasional game from my Wishlist shows up as well. If you have a game in multiple folders, each one will be listed underneath the game while you are in the "All" or "Owned" folders. If you open up a single folder, then you won't see the third line with the folder name as it would be quite repetitive, and the game/box/manual totals just move up a line to where they are in the current app.

Finally, searching for games has changed a bit since the last version. Since I've got your collection loaded, why not search that too? And since all that information is on the phone, I can search your collection first, then get the site's search results second. Even though it's now way easier than before to pinpoint a game in your collection because the paging is gone, Quick Search goes and makes it even easier.

All I have left to program is the ability to filter results down within a folder, the current app can do that with console and hardware/software type, and I don't want to take away any functionality. Hopefully I can find the time to get it done early this week, then get it out to my beta testers later in the week, then perhaps the market on the weekend.

Happy Easter everybody! I pushed 2.0 out to the market last night, then found a couple bugs this afternoon and replaced it with 2.0.1. Check it out and please let me know how it performs for your collection. Since it now requires your login information, I can't test it with any other collections than my own, so I can only cross my fingers that it works as well for everyone else as it does for me.

When I sync the only folder that shows anything is Wishlist, and the "Last synced" message only shows up under "For Sale/Trade" (which is empty) ans "Wishlist."

Any suggestions?

Interesting, are you hitting the refresh button next to "All Folders", or the individual ones next to the folders? Or do both behave the same?

When I refresh on "All Folders" or "Owned Folders," the progress circle twirls for a few seconds and only "Wishlist" and "For Sale/Trade" show the "Last Synced on" message. When I refresh on "Collection" or either of my custom folders, the progress circle goes forever, including sleep mode or returning to the home menu, but it does stop when I tilt my phone and change the aspect ratio.

I've already tried WiFi/3G, rebooting, uninstalling/re-installing. Thanks so much for your help! I'm a big fan!

Hmm, there's got to be some game in your collection that the loader thread is choking on... Sent you a PM so that we can try to drill down on this further.

Strangely, this issue also seems to be preventing me from replying to your last PM. When I click Send, your username switches from "Brianstorm99" to "brianstorm99", then throws the error that it is "Unable to find member 'brianstorm99'."

Anyway, thanks for the detective work! I'll have to bring this up to the site staff as it seems that it may affect more than just my app.

Hey, I noticed someone submitted a crash report... Apparently, the collection quantities (qty/box/man) on the site here support decimal places! I didn't even realize that was possible, so it crashed while trying to parse "1.5" to an integer. I'll have to revise my data model to support decimal places, sorry about that!

Title: Re: RFG App for Android: The official thread!

I will remove the 1.5 :) i just did that because I was missing disc 2 on the 2nd set

So there's been a few bumps in the road, but I think things have been pretty successful with 2.0. How about an upgrade to 2.1?

[img width=180 height=300]http://i.imgur.com/dMEXa.png[/img] (http://imgur.com/dMEXa)[img width=180 height=300]http://i.imgur.com/DVX71.png[/img] (http://imgur.com/DVX71)

I re-did the game detail pages and changed out the old image viewer for a new, multi-touch enabled one! It also should work a lot better than the old one did, especially when it comes to hardware information. The tabbed layout was a bit of a hassle to deal with, so I went and just put everything on a single page... We've all got pretty big screens now, right? I may tweak around with it further in the future, but for now I wanted something that matched the rest of the app a little better.

I also put in fixes for a number of bugs, including the decimals in collection quantities issue that hit quite a few of you guys. There are also some miscellaneous fixes to Quick Search and multi-region flags not appearing correctly on certain Android versions. As always the thread is a great place to bring up any issues you might run in to, there's just one of me working on this and I don't always catch everything. :)

Still can't download my collection it just sits there loading. If I dl my xls of my collection can I add it to my android?

Hey, sorry I missed this earlier! Your collection is waaay huger than anything else I've ever tested, so I guess I'm not surprised it might cause some issues. Let me know how this update works out for you, if you're still having problems I'll see what else I can do to get you up and running.

So my crashes was in my wishlist because I just 0 in all fields, fix it and now I can see my collection :-) btw love the search with the folders under the name, one thing that would be cool is if when we view our folders it would have the other folders that game is in, would make it easy to find thing I forgot to delete from  other folders

Ps can't wait until I can add new games with app

Well wouldn't know know it...

[img width=180 height=300]http://i.imgur.com/8evxN.png[/img] (http://imgur.com/8evxN)

That's exactly what I was working on! Still deciding on how to deal with adding/editing/deleting, maybe I put some icons in next to each folder, like on the home screen? I'm still playing around with it.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately guys, I feel like I haven't had a free weekend in quite some time, or I'm just too busy out going to yard sales and flea markets when I do. :) I think my plan is to get adding/editing/deleting games done for 2.2, then add an advanced search feature for 2.3. I have really been missing the ability to look up which games I don't have, that's for sure.

Oh my god I haven't posted since May? Sorry guys, I guess this is just what summer does to me. I've realized that a lot of the free time I would have for working on the app gets eaten up by going to yard sales, cleaning finds up, listing them on eBay, plus my friends wanting to do things more often... I don't have as many Friday nights to program on like I would in the winter, that's for sure.

But there has been progress since I last posted! Everything is a go with adding/deleting games from your collection as far as with talking to the website... It's keeping everything in sync with the database on the phone that has been a little trickier. You can check if I've actually done anything recently at https://github.com/theGrue/RFGeneration/commits/master, there's been some progress there, but I'll admit it's slow. I guess my brain's just used to going into summer vacation mode, despite having had a full time job for the past few years.

Just wanted to let you guys know I haven't abandoned things! In fact, I just picked up a Nexus 7...

Just tried out the app on my new Android phone. It works great! :D

EDIT: theGrue, could you change one thing? When I click on an image, say a Box Front, it shows me the image in full resolution, which means I only see a small part of the scan and not the whole image. Could you set it to show the entire image, regardless of my phone's resolution? People who want to see more detail can of course still zoom in.

I'm having the same problem as douglie007 was having - my collection just won't populate. It seems to be trying, but it just never shows up. My wishlist shows up fine (and is super handy!), but I'd really like to be able to check my collection on the go as well.

edit: I got it to work! The fix mentioned previously worked fine for me too. Today's lesson - read the whole thread next time. :)

Huh, you should be able to double tap it to zoom out or pinch to zoom. Did you try those things?

By the way, summer's over and I'm back to working on updates. Deleting games from folders is done, but adding new games to folders is taking a bit more work.

I didn't know about double tapping (haven't had the phone for long) but yes I can zoom in and out by pinching.

Regardless, I think it's preferable to see a zoomed-out full image immediately instead of defaulting to a 100% zoomed-in image that needs to be zoomed-out to make use of. As it is now, I only see the top left-hand corner of each image when I click on an image link. Surely you could change that?

Believe it or not, I think this was something that Android did not make very easy without totally re-inventing the wheel. But, I'll take another look at it.

Hey, sorry about ignoring Kickstarter talk, but I don't think I'd ever do one. I like doing this as a hobby project outside of my normal job, but I also like to have time for going out, playing games, or even just being lazy. I'm not sure how taking money would make me feel about the balance of all that.

Anyways, I've been working on the app off and on again lately, I just have a couple bugs to squash and then I can put an update out. After that I might either add in some smaller features or switch my focus to the website itself, building an easy to call API backend to eliminate some pain points with getting all the data, plus making it easier to implement on other platforms. I'll probably end up picking up a Mac to do some development on around Christmas. :)

An iOS developer account is $99/year. This lets you post apps to the official App Store. You could develop it and put it on Cydia (jailbroken app store) for nothing, but if you want it to be available on non-jailbroken devices, you have to pay annually.

ya why not just do a small kickstarter to cover basic costs like that developer account? i know what you mean about feeling bad accepting money for something you consider a hobby, but i don't see why not if it's just to cover costs.

Oh my god it's been six months since I pushed an update, I'm terrible.

An update should be out shortly that will allow you to add and remove games within the app! There are a couple minor display bugs here and there, but I felt like I had to get it out in order to keep things going with the project. If I get hung up on a single task like this for too long, development slows to a crawl. I'm hoping that finally releasing it gets it out of my brain, freeing said brain up to implement cool new features quickly. Next thing you know, there'll be a barcode reader. :)

Aiding with that, it's a little known fact that the ID# field for the Database search does RFG ID, Part # and UPC...

I downloaded the RF Gen app for my Samsung Prevail, and haven't been able to get it to sync my collection.  I hit the little green arrow sync button and it shows a loading circle in the corner, but it never syncs properly.  I've left it for several hours before and no luck.

anyone have any experience with this problem, or have advice?

If it's anything like the issues I had, it's because the username when you set it up is case sensitive. For instance, if you logged in as 'sideshowsam' instead of 'SideshowSam', it will log you in but some features just won't work. You may need to use the 'Applications' settings to clear the app's data and then log back in.

Happy 12/12/12 everybody! Celebrate with BAR CODE SCANNING! Oh my god it is so quick to add games to your collection now. I'm going to go add my GameCube collection that I've been dragging my feet on, RIGHT NOW!

Next I'm going to get that capitalization bug, I swear.

It uses the search on the Add Variant page instead of the normal search set to ID mode, which seems to be a little more permissive. I originally wired up to the normal search, but that one would fail when there was extra information after the barcode (like "(00100)"), while the Add Variant page would work. I did run into a few games that didn't come up though, I'll have to see if there was an error in the information or what.

I should really look into fixing most of our searches and at least make them standardized. The non-staff search does a lazy match for edits on countries (e.g. Europe (Regionwide) includes UK-only) while the staff search does a strict match (e.g. Europe (Regionwide) only matches Europe (Regionwide).

Please, please don't remove the option to search for ALL Euro games, whether they are marked as regionwide or country-specific. I constantly use the non-staff DB search to get a complete listing of all European PS1 games, regionwide and otherwise.

Never said I'd remove the ability - I'd just fix it so they would behave similarly. I'd still have the ability for the strict search vs. lazy search.

Can there be some sort of advanced search? Or Filtered search? When I search Pac-Man, a huge list comes up, and its hard to find the particular one I'm looking for. If I could filter the search for console, country, or even better search the ID as I can on the site (NES-PQ-USA).

The ID search should be the same as the Bar Code Scanner, so I don't see it being a problem. Grue's the only one working on the app though in his free time.

Not sure about the app, but we have sortable columns on the site. Just click on the column title in your collection and it'll sort by ascending/descending order.

I have been having trouble similar to Brianstorm99's issues.  Anytime I click the refresh icon next to the "All Folder" the app only updates the "Wishlist" and "For Sale/Trade" (which happen to both have nothing in them).  If the "Collection" category is selected for refresh the app will sit there spinning forever.   I have tried logging with different capitalization combinations, but nothing seems works.  Any ideas on what might be wrong given that I am logging in with the correct capitalization?

EDIT:
Just to give a little more information, I am able to add games to my collection through the app.  These additions stay even when I do an update of the collection.

Hey, Shadow just paged me to the thread because some folks were having issues related to games from newer consoles, I'm going to try giving myself the same PS4 games you've got and I'll see if I can recreate the issue.

I've been using the app to add some games to my collection and have a couple suggestions. When on a game page, the RFG logo should take you back to the main screen, its just a bit annoying to use the back arrow multiple times.
And this one may not even be something you can change, but even when you're in portrait mode, the UPC reader always goes to landscape mode.

Yeah, I need to make the app use a proper, modern Action Bar. I'm trying to get back in to the Android swing of things lately and make some improvements to fit a more modern look and feel. I tried to do some R&D last weekend, but ended up getting distracted with, you know, actual site problems. The app's not too useful when RFG is down! :P

As for the second thing, I think that's just how the barcode scanner is.

Just released an update that does this, by moving to the now standardized Android Action Bar instead of the one I hand-rolled. Hope everyone digs the new look! I'm gonna have to remember to update some screenshots, too. It's the first step on a path to make things more modern Android-y.

I have a slight problem with the app...
If a game's title gets edited, the change won't show in my collection. (Maybe even variation titles do the same?)
The only way I've found to fix this is to clear the app's data, then sign in again.

Maybe a button to update that information could be added, or possibly update it when refreshing the collection?

I have all the stuff required except knowledge. Ive been debating learning but if memory serves there was a price tag associated which kept me from trying.

Apple there is a yearly development fee, $99, I think. Not sure with Android, Amazon, and Windows.

Yeah - Apple is a PITA. Amazon Store would be a separate deployment from Google Play, but possible:

Quote
Q: How much does Amazon charge for using its developer program?

The program is free. You pay nothing to create a developer account, use Amazon APIs, and submit apps.
Q: Can I list (or post) free apps?

Yes. You are welcome to give away free apps on Amazon.

Q: I sell an app on Google Play. Can I submit the same app to the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Program?

Yes. The Amazon program is non-exclusive.

It would be up to theGrue to publish it, since he technically owns the application.

With Windows 10 around the corner, we could do a universal app without too much fuss. A developer account is $19/yr for a basic account, which I'd be willing to eat out of my own pocket for other uses. If we would want a desktop application though with additional capabilities (like accessing your Documents folder), it's a company account is which about the same as an Apple developer account.

I guess I could look at the Amazon store, I'm not too active on the Android front these days though. Is it possible to sideload onto your Amazon device instead?

So, with Google Play Services 7.8 coming out, there is now a native barcode reader function without the need for an external app. Any way that could be implemented?

I've tried to use the app before but can only use it as a search tool. The app doesn't sync with my collection. I seem to recall at one point a few years ago this function worked. Does it just not work with newer versions of android?

I am in the same situation as Project Nintendo.  The app has never worked properly in the 2 years that I have tried to used it.  You can add games to your account from the app, but you can't sync your online collection onto the phone.  It just gets stuck in an endless loop of syncing.

The only thing I can think of is the fact that you both have spaces in your usernames. Not sure if that's what's causing it though.

I have had the syncing issues on a several Samsung Galaxy S2s, S4s, and and an S5.  I have always figured that the issue had to do something with my account or an unusual game in my list rather than the phone.

Yeah... I tried to sync it last night. The rotating icon shows up and disappears, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.
Just tried again, same thing.
I last successfully synced on the 7th.

EDIT: I noticed the site responding faster temporarily so I tried syncing again. It worked!

In your case, I believe it was due to our slow server issues we were having recently.

Just noticed the update.  After being use to the sync never finishing, I didn't expect syncing to only take a fraction of second.  Anyways thanks for pounding out that bug.

EDIT:

On a minor visual note, I noticed the scroll on my collection page seems to jump several times before working continuously about 2/5's down the page.  I think this as something to do with the non-alphanumeric characters as I have a Ōkami with the macron over the O along with several .Hack titles that start with a period before hitting the typical numbers and letters.  Functionally everything works, but it seems there is something a little wonky happening with scroll for non-alphanumeric characters.

The app is great, i especially like the EAN scan option. Is almost perfect for me.

For me i would like to have 2 features:
- view and add comments for my games
-possibility to set a default folder when adding games. For example when i'm adding new ames i would like to go a folder "new adds" or similar, and i have always to change the folder for each game. If the app use the last folder used insted of always pre-select as default the collection folder will be great.

(UPDATE) Or it could be pre-selected in the first menu here are all folders visible.

I was trying to add hardware to my collection with the scan UPC code tool, but it always says it cannot find any result.

Here an example, http://www.rfgeneration.com/PHP/gethwinfo.php?ID=E-040-H-00020-A

The UPC in database is correct and the same that i have, but always get me no results.

Does the app only checks for games?

Title: Re: RFG App for Android: The official thread!

Hardware itself on the site is problematic - just ran into a new bug with it today with Variation Tie-Ins. However, I do not know the answer to your question about the app.
I can tell you that using the Search on the website, by entering the EAN into the ID# field (which also supports Part # and RFG ID#, for reference), pulls up the item in question, so it's not an issue with the database not recognizing the EAN: http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/search.pl

I can try to pull the app up on my wife's Android phone to see what's going on.

Title: Re: RFG App for Android: The official thread!
Post by: toze3 on April 06, 2016, 04:27:21 PM
I can find this item in normal search (by name) but not if i use the bar code mode that i use normally for the games.

It seems strange to fail the search by bar code in hardware, maybe a bug or not implemented function in the app.

Just to let you guys know about it.

The consoles will come from the data on the website here. Comments would have to be added separately to the app. I'll talk to Bickman, as I believe he forked the source over.

Ah ok, for some reason I thought there were issues with the app the last time a new console came out.  Like when you added a game / hardware from it it just showed up under "unknown console" or something like that in the app.

I know there's been some uncertainty with the app here recently but it looks like the Switch entries are doing strange things. If you search for a switch title, it's coming up as "SNES" for the console in the listed results. After adding it to your collection, it's showing as unknown console. Is there plans to get the app back up on the store and hopefully fixed?

Title: Re: RFG App for Android: The official thread!

I have not much interest in getting a Switch at this time but I do want the app (I was going to get it when I discovered that it was taken down in fact) and if its doing that for one new console then its probably doing it for others too. But I have tried another game collecting thing on the store and its ok but its not RF Gen good. I think I tried downloading the link someone gave but I ran into some kind of trouble. Can't remember what it was. But I wasn't able to get it working. Maybe I will try again. But of course just as I was about to get it it went down. I have only had my new phone since June and was just getting back into updating my collection on here and I thought doing it on my phone sounded like fun,

+1
It was the app that make me came here, it's very simple and functional, both it have some bugs and it's missing advanced options. unfortunately I don't have experience for programming, but I can help with ideas ehehe.

I really enjoy the possibility to add to the collection using a barcode scanner, and the simply layout and filters really helps to quickly see wich games are complete, or missing manual. For me this is fantastic, but...

If you have to move a game from a folder to another you will loose the comments that you previous add in the website, because the lack of editing tools for colection and impossibility to see and edit/create comments.

In my opinion and wish list of what can be improved:
1-View, add and edit comments
2-Edit entries of the owned collection(nº of game, manuals or box) without having to remove one entry and add another.
3-Move/copy games from one folder to another
4-possibility to set a default folder for new entries
  For advanced users:
5-possibility to submit games/variation/edits/images
6-possibility to check the submission status of submited games/variation/edits

Also would be good to have a full refresh of the collection, for example if one entry get the name edited , will always show the previous name on the listing, if you click to see the details will be displayed correctly, but the list still be with wrong/previous name. This make me to delete the cache and make login again. I don't know if it's a bug or limitation...

Related with bugs I just found one, the APP with barcode scan don't find Hardware...(PS I don't have the SWITCH!)

Issue with the barcode reader, its not the app its the sites search engine.  when you search a barcode it wants the exact barcode number that's in with the game. The fix would need to be in the search on the site to find partial barcodes, the phone reader does not get the end of some of the codes when they have 2 set  like most gamecube games with the 001001.

I don't know if Grue looked anymore into it or not... looks like he hasn't been around much.

Not trying to call anyone out but I'm assuming Grue has the source code and built the app for free / to give back to the site?  Is anyone able to get in contact with him?  I'd love to see some of the updates people mentioned added to it and get the Switch entries fixed.  If he's doing it for free, I'd be willing to kick some money towards him for his time.  Maybe do a donations thing like the site does?

Not trying to stir up any trouble or anything.  I just really like having the app and it's one of the primary reasons I chose this site to track my collection and I would hate to see it die.

hope it can be re-released and keep growing like this database!!

It's already a great tool, simple and easy to track the collection. It bring me to here, and also otherpeople.

Hope it don't loose this simplicity, but also hoping that others features can be added or improved.

It's this git : https://github.com/bickman2k/RFGeneration (a clone of the original )

I don't know about programming but for adding the nitendo switch maybe it´s only adding the following line, in the file app/src/main/java/com/jgrue/rfgeneration/data/RFGenerationData.java:
Code:
ih.prepareForInsert(); ih.bind(id, 231); ih.bind(name, "Nintendo Switch"); ih.bind(abbv, "NS"); ih.execute();
NS is just an option for abreviature it could be other, about the code is this correct?

I just submited this change on github, but I don't have means to build the app and test it, if you can build i can test if it works

Yeah, the code on Github is actually out of date compared to what's on my machine. I did find that line of code is where it sits, but I plan on attempting to get the fix in there and test possibly this weekend. Still have to get the Developer account set up on Google Play as well. But I may tap you to have you test out the new apk if you don't mind.

You could tap into the console list to automatically support new systems.
List of consoles and IDs: http://api.rfgeneration.com/v1/consoles/
Abbreviations (Replace the number on the end with the requested system ID): http://api.rfgeneration.com/v1/consoles/040
Perhaps just add a button somewhere to update the list.

I used those to make this ages ago: http://mumboking.byethost24.com/RFGen/ConsoleInfo/
Everything is updated automatically. :P

Sure, no problem!

And the Abrev should be SW and not NS as i did.

I think part of the reason why it's not done that way is because of the way it will sync locally. It doesn't require Internet access unless you search or manually sync your collection.

I'm working on it. Hit an issue with the newly compiled one. Going to see if I can get just the new console stuff added and pushed back to the store until I can get some more work done on other fixes in the app.

Well, it appears that I at least have the latest consoles added to the app. To install my copy would require a full uninstall/reinstall and then another when it hit the Play Store. I'll do some digging in to what we would need to get this back listed again so we can hopefully get this going again.

It was removed due to new Google policies, potentially around fake 3rd party applications.
Bickman's working on getting it posted to the Google Play store under our own account, along with a couple bug fixes that he posted here before (including addition of Nintendo Switch console).

For now, the old version can be found on various APK sites, such as the following:

Great news!

Just installed, I saw there is some characters that's not displaying correctly, p e. Alien 3 in one is correct and the other not, and both with same name.

In attachment is a printscreen with example.

In Google play I think you could have more images showing the lists, maybe blurry ones to avoid copyright rejection, to show how it display the lists.

The changes is just the new consoles? Not more functions for now, correct?[img width=576 height=1024]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171013/f79a04f103f607197d05fb510c9a65cf.jpg[/img]

That's probably a character encoding issue. I noticed it last night on mine as well. I mostly wanted to add the new consoles in and get it back up on the store. Bug fixes can start now that I have it back on the store.

I still think this is a good idea. Have a button that when pressed, grabs the current console list and updates the app's internal database.
Doesn't require internet access unless you tell it to update it.

Less time manually adding consoles to the source code, more time adding features and fixing bugs. :)

Title: Re: RFG App for Android: The official thread!
Post by: bickman2k on October 17, 2017, 10:28:53 AM
Regarding the images in the Play Store, I was required to have 2 images to create the listing. I was trying to get the app back on the store ahead of RWX so we could have it as something to talk about at the show, so I grabbed the main screen and the about screen. I'd love to add some more screenshots now that it's back up. It was also 11pm when I was working on it after a trip to NYC, so I was a bit beat at the time. :)

As for the console list portion, that's a great point. Maybe I could make it pull down the current list each time you perform a sync. Will have to do some more looking in to it.

The sort of counter to that is that there really aren't a ton of new consoles that get added. There were maybe 10-15 or so between the last time the app was updated when it was on the store and this release. So, until it gets to that point, it's not a huge deal for me to add new ones now that it is back in the store. Pushing updates with just consoles would be a piece of cake.

So, I need to fix the text encoding issue (black diamond with ?) for certain text.

I have one feature that I would like to add, but I'm going to hold off on any announcements at this time. I also think that if I can get one of the features, the other one in mind may fall in to place as well.

One other thing I would like to get working is integrating the Google Play Services option to use a barcode scanner instead of relying on a third party application to do so.

Still no luck for me. I even reinstalled the scanner so it should be the latest version. And I am doing a standard code on the PS4 game I just got. There is a slight chance we don't have the game in the  yet I will look now.

Edit: We didn't for this region so I added it. But it didn't work with the original Xbox game either I tried and it was a different kind of code. The kind where the first and last number are separate from the rest and have a bar code line dividing them from the body. The PS4 game is the one with all the numbers together and not divided by a barcode line.

It could have to do with differences in phone cameras. But my phone isn't that old (2016) so it has a decent one.

Make sure the game has the upc added, there is a lot of games that don't have it. And if it's not there the scan has nothing to go on

Some of the ones I checked were for Switch games, so I don't think that would apply, but possible.

Also, just a heads up, after moving and being swamped with a huge work project for months now, I'm finally going to be able to make some time to be able to do some more development with this. Part of the fun will come with attempting to modernize the code and add a couple of features, but also cleaning up some deprecated functions to help use modern Android API calls and remove legacy code out.

There are a couple of features that I want to add to it while also giving it a more modern and clean interface. This is going to take some time to implement, but I hope it works out. Also, due to some of the OS versions I'm seeing installed, it may affect being able to set up some of the look and features I would ultimately like to have, but eventually we'll get there.

Yeah, it's the 4.x stuff that doesn't have Material Design starting with 5.0. Trying to see what I can do to properly set that up so it would work with either, but I think it's going to be a little more complex than I have thought the last couple of times I looked at it.

My phone is a few years old now so I figured it wouldn't be 5, but I guess it has allowed mine to still update or something, its 5.1. I likely will have it at least another year since I replaced the battery this summer. It is not one of the huge brand names and wasn't bought from a plan/carrier, its a brand called BLU (Bold Like Us). So I guess they are likely to allow me updates for a while longer since they are not pulling my arm to get a new one like some of the bigger names or plans would be.

EDIT: This seems to have cleared itself up so IDK what was going on...

Now that the PS5 / Xbox Series X/S are out, the app needs to be fixed to recognize these.  They are showing up as ?? for the console.  No rush as they are working but just something to get fixed.

I have to do some additional updates to what platforms it's compiled and supported for per Google Play terms, but hoping to get there soon.

Anyone using the App on Android 11 or 12 now?
I upgraded to Android 11 a bit back and the rfgen app does not actually sync folders, it stays at 0 for entries.

I know file permissions stuff changed in 11 so maybe its related.

I'm on 12 and it has been working fine for me.

RF Gen app version is 2.8

app could use a few minor updates though.  Like PS5 / XSX still have not been properly added to it.

I'm on 12 as well, and it generally works, though I have found that I can't rely on it when I'm out game hunting, because the game list doesn't show everything I have, so I still have to use the website. But I use the app a lot for adding new games because I can use the barcode scan feature to scan new games and add them to my account.
