Title: Moniker Mania: RF Generation User Name Origins
Post by: Zagnorch on April 12, 2012, 12:56:29 AM
Hey now!

I figured I'd restart a thread that was wiped out in the Great Outage, and once again ask...

...how did you come by your RF Generation user name?

Is it based on a fave hobby? A tribute to a hero of yours? The humiliating result of a lost bet? Be it painfully obvious or painstakingly esoteric, feel free to give us the lowdown.

My handle comes from a name my father's former coworker gave his dog. (Actually, Zagnorch was the dog's first name; her full name was Zagnorch Welinskivich)

Sad but true: I didn't even come up with my own user name. But then, I've considered originality to be overrated anyway. None the less, it's the nom-de-web I've gone by since I established my Hotmail account fifteen years ago.

So, what's your story? Don't be shy, now...

Bildtstar is actually the name of a potato race. It's developed by farmers in the area where I live, the municipality Het Bildt. They wanted to name it 'The star from Het Bildt' and so Bildtstar was born.

Like Zagnorch I didn't come up with my name too, but I like the name and I'm a proud citizen of Het Bildt! So next time you eat potatoes, it could be me lying on your plate  :o

mumboking comes from "Mumbo Jumbo" from Banjo Kazooie.
For some reason I decided to add "king" on the end.
The first time I used that name was on ROBLOX (http://www.roblox.com/) in 2007.

I've used this username ever since...

I've been Izret since i first got online in '99. It is my last name backwards.
I ended up having to use various numbers do to lost passwords and what not. I have used 101(longest running/most common), 102(on 360/AIM), 103(360/netflix/AIM), 159(AIM only),369(360/AIM).

I did use the tag Toizy at an adult site/forum. It was during that time when not everyone realized i was still a minor and i didn't want to get the member who invited me in trouble should someone decide to google me.

My username on eBay was originally my mothers account. Since i was not old enough to have an eBay account i used hers all the time and just kept it when i got older so i could keep the feedback. Never changed the handle since i always thought that was sketchy of people.

Originally, I went by the handle of Wolfbaine002. The name came about because I was playing MechWarrior with a friend, and I'm horrible with names. I wanted to play with Clan Wolf (I like wolves), and ironically he came up with the name Wolfsbane. However, because of the connotation of the name and because it's a commonly used name, I modified it a little and added my favorite number to further prevent it being confused with another person's name.

Later, when playing a PvP modified World of Darkness MUD, I convinced an Admin to allow me to use an abandoned class - Shadow Dragon. I had to come up with a name, so I came up with Shadowclaw. After a while, when I transitioned to another MUD, I made a ninja character and wanted a Japanese-sounding name. Taking inspiration from Japanese mythos and also from my favorite anime character (Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell), I again modified the name a little bit and came up with Shadow Kisuragi.

My name is a corruption of the drunk Russian stereotype DJ, Bumbatumba from Grand Theft Auto 2.  The name of the station was WKTBH "In Fantastic Medium Wave."  Man it's been a while since I thought about that.

I can't remember. :(

It doesn't really mean anything, nor is it a part of my name or something like that. I guess it could be "Sir Gin" (as in Gin, the liquor) but I don't think I thought of that when typing in the name way back when.

My username is the name of the hero in the book series Warriors (well, the first series, before the authors decided they needed to make a million spin-offs), which is about tribal feral cats, that use the powers of their ancestors or something like that. I used it on the first two forums I joined and it stuck.
Of course, it wasn't until after I quit reading the series that people started to recognize my username.

There's actually a music genre called Super Ponybeat I've brought up previously. It's not that bad. It's music from the show, remixed with Eurobeat:

There are other genres of Pony music too, including metal.

Also, from an email I just received, apparently it's not just my studio:

just heard from a friend that is into it that it is because the show is happy and the music is excellent. (The music isn't terrible)

Still don't get it, I was wanting to cut off my ears and stab my eyes out after 5 minutes of watching the show.

Maybe deep down that is how I came up with my profile name..... (see ON topic)

Zag, I've been lost in the Eurobeat forest ever since I originally heard Dave Rodgers, wandering through an arcade. It brought me to an Initial D arcade cabinet, where two people were racing each other in a downhill race. Ever since, I've been fascinated in Industrial/Techno/Trance/Eurobeat and, as a sidenote, street/road racing and tuning. I swear, there are some nights where I want to toss some Eurobeat on the stereo and drift down certain portions of the highway around here. ;D

blklblskt

Never heard of him.

So, the way I stumbled upon blcklblskt was when I was thinking of what I should use for my email address.  I was really into skateboarding and was riding a Black Label board, so I took out the vowels and got blcklblskt.  I hated having to give my email address to other people (not that anyone emails anymore) because of all the WTF? looks I got.

My friend once asked if I just punched the keyboard and got my user name.  I think that is a better story.

You'd probably be up to first class by now if you didn't annoy Crabby at his workplace so often.

Then again, Crabby needs to be annoyed. Dude's just way too mellow on the CollectorCast; someone needs to dial up his intensity a bit. Maybe turn him into the next Billy Mays... only without the heart condition or the coke habit.

And since I'm waaay too far away to do the job, it falls on you pick up the slack. Do us proud, good sir.

I can just imagine the dreams of a steam engineer. Is it constant steam punk?

I rarely dream. I wonder if Steam Punks dream of Boiler systems?

Sounds like the tag line to an Inception sequel/spinoff. Or a new take on the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

Anybody want to help me with the story treatment I'll be pitching to the Hollywood producers?

Have I not told it here before? I know I've not made a secret of it, must have said in chat and pm's and the like....

Back in the 90's a friend and I (ironically I just emailed him not 5 minutes before I saw this) needed a user name for something. He literally just mashed his hand on the keyboard and "nupoile" appeared. We both were like, "Hey! That actually looks like a word." So we used it.

I like it because it has no meaning, isn't related to anything, only uses letters and no one else has it. That's also why there's no capitalization.

I'm not really a stickler for pronunciation either (because it's not a word) normally I say it like, "new poil ee" though.

When I first saw it, I thought it might have been French, and pronounced, "new-pwahl."

Dodged a bullet there, that's for sure.

My real first name is Erik, and 'ErGII' is the result of my attempt to spell out my name in the original Dragon Warrior...with the Power Glove. It had already been a half hour, and that seemed close enough.

Adding 'Invader' was meant to make it sound like an Invader Zim character, I think. I'm not very clever.

While it would seem mine is pretty obvious, like anything to do with me it has a long-winded story...

Back in my college days, due to some interesting developments concerning an engagement, homelessness, medical issues, and close friends, I ended up paying $150 each month for rent to live in a walk-in closet at a 3-bedroom house shared amongst 24-hour-partying twenty-somethings.  There was a constant presence of anywhere between a dozen to fifty anything-goes people hanging out everyday, and the place was colloquially if not universally coined "The Slacker House."

Years after its inevitable collapse, I was setting up my Xbox Live account, and despite getting in early, 'slacker' was taken.  'slackur' was the first derivative that worked.

I've actually been working on writing 'The Slackurhouse Memoirs' off and on for a few years now.

I briefly did some backyard wrestling back when I was in high school, and The Saint Of Pain was my "ring name."  I didn't do it very long, but the name just stuck with me, and I've used it and variations thereof for various email accounts, my XBox Live handle, here of course, and a variation (Saint Pain) is the codename of a superhero character I created for a comic book idea I've been developing off and on for a few years now.

My name comes from my days when I worked at Tattoo shop. I was mostly a customer service and clean-up person but I also did piercings. So, the boss at this place starts calling me Fokakis because there is a guy with that last name who runs an Amusement Arcade Distribution company. My boss says he always is busy and gets shit done no matter what, so he thought the same about me. The nickname stuck and soon everyone that I knew started calling me this.

I have since used the name for any username, character names on video games. D&D characters.

I suppose I've been here long enough, I should explain mine. It's not that complicated. "FRO" was a high school nickname I had, because of my hair. I hated it at first, but it stuck, and eventually I embraced it. I'm still "FRO" on the shmups forums. Most other forums either wouldn't allow a username that short, or it had already been taken by someone, or by a bot. So I added "Metal" to the front because, well, I love heavy metal. Thus, MetalFRO was born.

I don't think I explained this yet. I am too lazy to look back through this.

My real name is William but my family and friends call me Willie. In high school one of my friends starting calling me this one day and I hated it. Soon some other started to, thankfully it was only a few people. He explained he thought I talked like a robot, in a kind of monotone voice. I disagree but maybe when I was younger I was more like that. I think the older me speaks with more emotion. But I don't think I ever agreed with this assessment. However even though I hated it I realized soon after it gave me a unique nickname I could embrace and use on social media platforms such as this. I always had trouble thinking of usernames before and now I had a good one to use. An example of a username I used on the music sites LastFM and Rate Your Music were CantDecideAName and ThisDesiredName. I literally just used the fact I couldn't think of one as the username. I loved the wittiness of those but RobotWillie is more personal and has more to do with me. I also used the name of the city I live in, its a good sized city and there isn't really any other cities with the name so it was often not taken when signing up for services such as the main Shenmue fansite which a member there showd me this place (Ryudo) as he went by then. If it was used I would put Will on the end, another shortened version of my real name. I did this on MySpace. It is dangerous to use the name of where you live in retrospect but its large enough that I don't fret about being picked out of the haystack somehow and my first name is common enough, and I never told anyone my address unless I trusted them (such as a guy who exchanged games with me).

The bottom line is I finally had a name that was more unique and personal and ironically I hated it at the start. I do like being called Bill less for some reason. Its because I have been given the nickname Willie and calling me Bill sounds wrong to me.

I've actually had quite a few over the years, but to save you guys trouble here's the two that I use on RFGen:

MerryGoRoundGaming (barely use it anymore but you can still see it in the url of my blog) was something I came up after going on a merry-go-round when I was like 8. It's that simple lol

The one I use nowadays is koola. koola comes from my old email koolaidman@tocomail.com, which has its own backstory. I was looking through the Windows file directories about 2 years ago, and came across koola as my user folder (abbreviation of koolaidman from the afformentioned email address). I really liked it and it's the moniker I've used ever since.
