What is up with this resistor attached to it? It's an offical Nintendo brand I won off of Ebay for $14...and Im wondering what's the story behind it?

It's funny you mention this, as I noticed it a couple weeks back as well at a friend's place. I think it's simply the PAL version of the controller.

and it is! Thanks to some English folks at Digitpress.com, one replied with
"It's a ferrite core around the cable to prevent any electrical feedback to the pad. European regulations require it which meant any N64 controller sold here had to have it."
