I just had a really scary thought. The next Xbox is going to be all online, right? It is supposed to deliver "episodic" gaming, where developers can make their games in parts and just send new additions out over the net. It is going to allow for onine in-game purchases. The next Xbox will supposedly release later this year.
Then we have Phantom. Infinium Labs' president is the guy who created the Xbox and who was a manager on the team that developed DirextX. The Phantom reportedly is going to have
Microsoft Windows XP built in. I'm not sure when this was announced, but it is on
www.phantom.net, the official Phantom site. Of course, Phantom will have most if not all of the same specs as the next Xbox, and it too centers around online capabilities. Phantom supposedly will release later this year.
Seems to me like Microsoft has a lot invested in Phantom, so why would they do this if they are releasing a system at the same time that could potentially kill it off? They'd just stand to lose a lot of money for no reason. Either they are the Atari of this decade (see XEGS vs. 2600 jr. vs. 800 series vs. 7800 vs. 5200), or they are up to something here. If those two systems suddenly become one, or something happens to connect them in some way, I don't even know what I'll do. Hooray for conspiracy theories!
