Bought my first one for top dollar when it game out, with Doom, couldn't see the screen too well, took it back within 6 hours for my money back.
Anyway, a few years on, I am playing an original GBA again. With an angle poised reading lamp, with a small halogen bulb in, I can sit in my reclining armchair and I can see the screen very well.
Picked one up very cheap in a job lot on eBay, sold the games, except for Advance Wars, which isn't too bad at all! Finished it in a week, playing it through again, I have yet to do the training missions and the extra maps that I've bought in the shop etc etc
For a simple turn based war game, it's pretty good.

The screen on the DS is even better than the SP. The SP is frontlit, and that makes the picture a little blurry, but the DS is backlit, so the picture is perfect. But I don't think a $150 system is worth buying just for the screen.

Advance Wars is such a great game, You might want to try the Fire Emblem games.
