Are you sure you have to add it manually? I got a little program with my router that installs a printer port for me.

Upgrade to XP.
Problem solved.

I'm not sure you can actually do what you are trying to do with 98, you may have to use an NT version of Microsoft's Windows.

Easiest solution would prolly be to connect the printer to one computer directly and then share it through that computer.

You can't do it from the OS but there are programs that will let you do it for you.  I had to set that up on around 50 Win 95/98 PC several years back, and it worked like a charm.  I believe the one I used was freeware, if you want I can email you a copy (it's very small) on Monday when I am at work.

that would be great if you could. my e-mail is in my profile.

yeah, upgrading would be the simple solution. the problem is the PC in question runs our embroidery software. it won't run in anything higher than Win98. the software does not have an upgrade for current op systems. they have a complete new version and it costs about 15 grand. not an investment we want to make at the moment.

okay here's a stupid question. is there a way to run a current op system and emulate an older one in order to run older software?

If you have a Macintosh, yes.

Windows does have a "compatibility mode" that helps with running some Win95 and Win98 programs on XP.  I'm not sure how it does this exactly (hydrobond could tell you more), but you might try installing the program on a system with XP already on it and see if the compatibility mode will do anything for you.  Right click on the exe, go to properties, and you'll find it under the "Compatibility" tab.  Whatever you do, just don't reformat and install XP on that Win98 system before you get it working on another PC first.  I wouldn't want to give you bad advice and have you go to that much trouble.

Microsoft does have a product called Virtual PC that runs under XP and allows you to run another OS on that XP box.  I used it to run Win Server 2003 and have a virtual server running right on my desktop, it's great for development.  No clue if it support running Win 98 but I can check that out to and let you know.

The Microsoft product does support Win 98 and there is also a product called Workstation by VMWare that would do the trick.  In either case you would still need to fix the printing to TCP/IP problem if you need to do that from 98.  The printing would be fine from XP.  And like Nep said all of this needs to be tested to verify it works with everything you are dealing with.  The VMWare site offers a free trial download http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/ so you can start playing.

would dual booting work for you?  Set up 98 on the primary partition, and install XP on separate partition.

the only downside to dual-booting is that 98 uses FAT32 while  XP uses NTFS.  If you're in 98, you won't be able to see any files saved on the NTFS partition.  you could install XP on a FAT32 file system, but you lose the file security and compression benefits in NTFS.

For your printer problem, 98 and NT use NETBIOS instead of Host Names (which 2000 and XP use).  The NETBIOS name of an XP computer is almost always the first 16 letters of the host name.
