You know, most RPGs are like 30 hours, so playing for a few hours doesn't really qualify as playing it.

I mean dude, that's almost enough time to discover Sephiroth's motif and Aeries' fate. almost

I will admit that I haven't had the pleasure of playing FF I-VI, so I can only base my opinion from VVII and beyond. 

FF VII IMHO is the best, followed by VIII and then IX.  All were great in their own way.  I remember that I was a bit turned off when I first fired up VIII - the characters graphics were more generic 'action' figures than in VII, and I was nervous that this big jump in character presentation would also be seen in the game.  Obviously, I was pleasantly surprised. 

Overall a great series.  I will have to get my hands on FF I-VI and give those a go.  FF X and beyond was too much FMV, not enough gameplay.
