In short, it's a pain the neck to get running and locks up after ten minutes even when you do get it going.

Have you cleaned the games and cart slot?

You'll want to clean them better than that. A little rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip on the contacts will go a long way toward getting them more reliable. Better yet, if you can, open up the carts and really clean the contacts. Its amazing how much gunk accumulates after ~20 years.

One of my friends left me a bit that fits the carts, so I'll have to try that.

If cleaning it doesn't work and the system stops working you can always just turn the SNES into a table lamp like I did, looks great in a room surrounded by games. But a little cleaning goes a long way so id try that first.

You can clean the system's pins by rubbing alcohol all over the cart's contacts, popping it in, then popping it out really quick and rubbing more alcohol on it. Do that until the Q-tips look perfectly clear and then you're done with that part.
If it still has problems after a good cleaning you might want to try some different cords, I have an extra power cord and like 5 spare RF adapters laying around.
If it STILL has problems then you probably need to resolder or replace the powerjack at the back of the system (its the part where you plug everything in).
