I don't know if I'll buy the console at launch, but I'm excited. The price is appealing with two SKUs one at $449 and one at $549. So it will be somewhat affordable from day one.

I like that the new Playstation is more developer friendly. Apparently the PS3 was difficult to work with. This could attract new talented/under-the-radar development houses to produce games.

Did I miss the part of the conference where they discussed price? I thought that the price, the launch date and being able to see the darn thing weren't revealed.

You didn't miss anything. Price and launch dates weren't announced, but I sleuthed around the internets and learned this info. I think I got this from either Game Informer or Gamasutra. Launch is supposedly November.

If thats true I'm a bit surprised. After the PS3 and Vita launches I didn't think they would risk going over $399 at the most. I think that would really set Microsoft up to clean up in sales if it can launch for anywhere from $299-$399 around the same time.

That also means for me I'll definitely be holding off until the "slim" model launches after a couple years for cheaper Wink

What where the different features in the two skus? I'd assumed HDD size and maybe a subscription to PS+, but anything else?

The two SKUs probably relate to hard drive size options. PSN data from PS3 won't transfer over so that could mean that PSN/PS+ is getting revamped (I know it will be more "personal" by provided better suited recommendations). Maybe one SKU will have a PS+ subscription.

I think the price is reasonable (but I will wait for a price drop) considering the capabilities on the system. If Microsoft is able to launch below $400 I expect that to come at the expense of sacrificing something integral to wow factor or user experience.

I'm a Sony (not a fanboy.. I like everything Sony) so I'll jump on the bandwagon when I can afford to.

I don't understand why these companies won't just release their consoles for next to nothing. They already lose tons of money on them, might as well lose a little more and focus on blockbuster titles and secure a larger market share.

It was the same thing with those K-Cup coffee makers, the makers were too expensive for most mid to low income consumers to bother with, but the real profits from the industry is going to come from selling the cups, not the makers.

I guess if Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo owned the companies that make exclusive titles for their respective consoles then your idea could be plausible. But let's face it, capitalism is here to stay and everyone wants to make money.

Microsoft successfully ran a subscription based model of selling the 360 in some test areas not too long ago. They could very well put out a machine the is on par or even well beyond the PS4 and use a subcription based price point to sell it at a price that "seems" superior (like $99 and a year or two to Xbox live for low monthly payments) and I dont see the PS4 being preparred to deal with that kind of pricing option when its lowest SKU is $449.

I in no way find 450-550 reasonable.
I guess that is why I never have new consoles.

NO games interest me yet but the hardware does. Will likely get one when it has a robust library and way down in price. Like I did PS3

i'm excited for a lot of the games, but i like action and FPS games Wink. i don't plan on getting this at launch though, mainly because i did the same with the Wii U and i still only have 2 games for it...i have a lot of systems with very small libraries and i'd rather build those up while waiting for the PS4 price to drop.

That $99 Xbox 360 "deal" really upset me. If you did the math it worked out to something like paying for one and half 360 consoles by the end of the contract. I also didn't like having the online component forced on me. I'd rather fork over all the cash upfront or do layaway.

My Wii U situation is exactly the same. I agree with you 100%

Personally I agree with you, but you'll notice I put the word seems in quotes. Typical consumers love to pay installments though it seems even if it ends up costing them more in the long run. How many people do you that buy cell phones out right vs getting them cheaper through a contract? Like I said the test run for Microsoft was successful so why wouldn't they use it as an option. Even if it ends up being more expensive than the PS4 over a period of 1-3 years doing payments I could see it outselling the PS4 de to the short sightedness of many customers.

You're smart. I never considered consumer misinformation as a marketing tacting.

Join the club. I've barely had my PS3 a couple of years. I still don't even have a 360 and suddenly the new consoles are popping up.

On the other hand, I've been falling behind on the console curve because I'm becoming less and less interested in newer games. I only picked up the PS3 by virtue of the fact that it plays Blu-rays and a handful of exclusives I find enjoyable (Little Big Planet, Uncharted, etc.).

I suppose I'm curious about the PS4 but I need to see some games in action (and less gushing about specs) before I get excited.
