Just unrelated thoughts.

I was searching ebay earlier and found a few Mortal Kombat games that looked EXACTLY the same as Killer Instinct carts.
Like Mortal Combat Gold for N64 that said Killer Instinct Gold. Maybe the poor sod thought he was holding a Dreamcast GD-Rom.
