I was in Staples today with my friend looking for RAM so we could beef his computer up enough to play Warcraft 3, when the Staples clerk started talking to us about World of Warcraft. He claimed that he played the game for a while, and that his character eventually became so powerful that he was able to single handedly kill everything in the main Orc city of Orgrimmar. He said he "leveled the whole city". I don't know how many of you have played WoW (I'm level 60), but anyone who has knows that the Staples clerk's claim is absolutely RIDICULOUS. I've seen 40-man groups of level 60 players try to do what he was talking about and all of them got killed. Being the asshole that I am, I called the Staples guy a liar right there in the store, at which time he started to spew more ridiculous bull in an attempt to make us believe his story. My friend asked him to show us his ridiculously powerful character. He told us (of course) that he got bored with the game and deleted it. He was fuming angry too. The other Staples guys were laughing at him. They must have known what a delusional nut he was.
The whole event got me thinking though. That wasn't the only time I've met a guy like that.
Another time a guy told me that he could beat Tekken in 2 seconds (seriously, he really said "2 seconds") because he had special codes that made the game go faster.
In grade school a lot of kids claimed they had done the mythical "nude-ality" in Mortal Kombat 2, or the legendary naked code for Tomb Raider (there is sorta kinda a naked code for Tomb Raider, but it's not anything like the kids used to talk about). If you inquired any more they would tell you they forgot how they did it.
A guy I knew in high school told me that he had Star Wars 3 downloaded on his computer. This was like 2002 or 2001. Star Wars 2 wasn't even out yet. I don't think 3 had even been filmed at the time.
I've tried and tried and tried and tried to analyze these people. Why do they say these things? Do they think they're impressing people with stories they clearly made up about things so trivial as video game achievements? Many of them seem to believe the stories themselves. It's like they're not just lying. They're delusional. Some of these guys really freak me out.
Have any of you had encounters with delusional wacko gamers? Tell me about it. Tell me about them. I want to know.

Yes, I've met you....
But other than that, I've also met the other Mike, and there is Frank, the delusional WoW player. It consumes his soul...

You talking about me with the Star Wars 3 thing?  If so, I never claimed to have it, but I did have a folder for it on my computer, which I created when I got the Episode 2 rip.  (Just checked, folder was created July 30th, 2002 at 21:41:33.) ÂÂÂ
The Tomb Raider nude one is huge, I knew of at least three people who said they found the cheat code to do that, but somehow it was reset whenever I saw them play the game. ;-)
edit: I also think it would be much more interesting to hear about your "stupid people in media play" stories. Those are always hilarious.

I have met people like that ALOT.
Kid across the street, few kids at school, friend of mine random morons. Store personel (Most memorable also being at Staples LOL)
In fact my step bro is one of those people.
He will stick to and defend his rediculous lies no matter what truth is thrown at him.
Funny example He tried to impress me way back by asying that he got a Pennsylvania quarter specially from the mint as an early release and only his school (300 kids tops) got them.
Was over his house a few days later and he didn't have one. He had lent it to someone or something stupid and similair.
Then there was the time he would completely dissasemble and clean all the computers in the school because noone there was smart enough.
But to do some gaming ones since that was the question he had a burned copy of i believe WoW3 that NEVER WORKED yet he said he had been able to get online and play it a few times. He asked my to try loading it. Gave it a try and got a copyright protection warning. He never got past installation....
Then when i started colecting games seriously he told me that he ad TONS of Genesis and NES games at his house i had never seen when i was there. To this day i still haven't seen them. Neither has anyone but him apparently.
Such sad sad creatures these people are....

I wasn't talking about you with the Star Wars 3 thing. I really knew a guy who claimed he had the whole movie, in it's entirety.
And Traderjake doesn't even seem to know what I mean by "delusional gamer". I don't even think he read the original post. Yeah, Frank might be obsessed with WoW, but obsessed and delusional are two completely different things.

Actually, his interest is waning. Over lunch today he even mentioned getting back into star wars galaxies. What he really wants is something like World of Starcraft. Same gameplay, but with a futuristic theme. (I would actually much prefer this.)
Have I just gotten lucky, or have you all been very unlucky, as I can't remember any delusional gamer stories.

I've tried and tried and tried and tried to analyze these people. Why do they say these things?
Simple, there's the average person with an IQ of 100, then there are people with much higher IQs like most of us, and then there's those that are necessary to balance the average IQ at 100, those with such a low IQ that they lack the logic and analytical skills to realize that their stupidity is a
bad
thing.
Sure, there are other personality traits associated with such behavior as well as lack of social skills, but nevertheless I believe that IQ plays a large role in their behavior. After all, simpleminded people live the most relaxed lives, because, well, they are simple and don't know any better.
In other words, they are not always concerned about the repercussion of their actions (and lies).
There are, of course, always those that live in denial. It's just like building a relationship on lies, it expands exponentionally. As soon as the first lie is told, many more will follow. I personally show no interest to those who make up stories - I'll only waste time on them if I have the opportunity to literally prove them wrong with substantiated evidence. Having a "my word against your word" discussion will never solve anything anyway

Well, delusional is the act of being deluded, and it would appear that Frank has recently been deluded into thinking the game is more important than real life, therefore, he would be delusional.
I thought it would be mean just to attack you Mike....
So here I expound...
Someone I know claims that it is possible to do a reverse boss run in Super Metroid. "I heard it on board 8 on GameFAQs." My response to that is ha! There is no way that could happen, you need the gravity suit to get into lower Norfair right? Wrong! He showed me personally how to get in, and it involves wall jumps. So I guess if you were God you could do a reverse boss run. But no one is God, right. Therefore; I propose that this person is delusional.

Unfortunately, the abundance of gamers that choose to lie and/or exaggerate their gamer skills are the ones that give the overall gaming population a bad name and cause the non-gaming public to roll their eyes when conversation even starts to go in a gaming direction.
However, with gaming becoming more and more mainstream, hopefully this will lessen this occurence because it would mean gaming would be more "socially acceptable" and possibly weed out those that lie/exaggerate because the more people that know of something not to be true, the less likely the liars will be able to do or say something to gain attention or make themselves seem more elevated in status than they really are.
The easiest way to deal with liars/exaggerators (or any annoying person) is to just nod politely to what they're saying and slowly walk away from them.
