Splatterhouse was the sole reason I USED to own one, and I loved it...wish I had never gotten rid of it...and I bought it new from Babage's just before they switched over to Babbage's Ect., or whatever they call themselves now.

I also liked JJ & Jeff (I'm probably in the minority).  My brother and I would play that forever, but it never seemed like we got anywhere with it.

Just to confirm, was the TG16 part of the same console generation as the SNES and Genesis?

yes... but it came just a bit before the genesis, and has an 8 bit processor.  it had a second processor that the marketing department decided to add 8+8 to make it a 16 bit machine

So it wasn't a true 16-bit system?
Well that was a pretty rocken SplatterHouse conversion in that case.

Sega should of used the same marketing strategy and said the Saturn was 64-bit Grin

I've been trying to get a cheap TG16 system for a LONG time, but I've only gotten 2 that were both broken.  Hopefully someone will help me out someday.

A lot of people still don't know what a TG16 is, so I think a week dedicated to it is a great idea.

NEC's first video game system looked 16-bit, sounded 16-bit, but in reality, it was 8-bit to the core. Though its main CPU was 8-bit, the chips that handled its graphics and sounds instructions were 16-bit, making the system look like a 16-bit system at first glance. One neat feature this unit had was that all it game cartridges, (or HuCards), were about the size of a credit card. This made the games extremely portable. This is reflected by the release of the "Turbo Express". It was a Gameboy looking device with a black case and a colour LCD screen. But unlike the Gameboy, where you had to buy a separate Gameboy version of a NES game to play it on Gameboy, you could use the same HuCard for the main unit on the Turbo Express just like the Sega Nomad!

A CD-ROM unit was later released: the first CD unit for any console unit. Though a bit expensive, it never got a large following from the consumer. The Turbo Grafx 16 unit later faded out of the main stream market a year or two year later, but its imprint to the world wouldn't.

NEC is one of the few companies I truly trust, in fact my PC was made by NEC  Grin
Other electrical companies I trust to the same degree are Philips and Panasonic.

Something Dreamcaster will possibly find interesting is that the Dreamcast's graphic processor was made by NEC along with Videologic.

By the way, I think he meant a week dedicated to the actual system.

So why is the NEC Turbo Grafx 16 so unheard of?

It's simple really, much like the Sega Saturn it's true success story lies in Japan, a country that knows good technology when they see it.
But this is even more complicated in the case of the Turbo Grafx 16, as Turbo Grafx 16 was merely it's US name, yep it got renamed, but not just renamed, the entire thing got a new look. The slimmer sexier Japanese release was called the NEC PC-Engine.

Ahhh... so now it's all making more sense, no?
And then to top it all off, it never got a PAL release so all of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand all missed out.

7 million units were still sold nevertheless and it had around 650 games released for it.
Rated 5 stars by The encyclopedia of Game.Machines this is what they had to say, witch RF is more than welcome to reuse if they want in the event we have a NEC's great system week.

Quote
Rectangular, not much bigger than a handheld and with a slim slot instead of a fat cartridge flap: The PC-Engine was an achievement of diminishing electronics. Even 15 years after its launch, it still appears modern and practical. Games came on thin HuCards – to date the smallest media for stationary hardware.

The joint development by chip manufacturer NEC and games producer Hudson marked the transfer from the 8-Bit age to the 16-Bit era. Released in 1987 in Japan, the PC-Engine, with its 6502-related processor and 16-Bit custom graphics chip, stood between the best selling NES and the highly anticipated Mega Drive and Super Nintendo consoles. Although it was based on a CPU similar to that used by the Apple II, NES and C64, the PC-Engine hardware was totally superior graphically and acoustically. Tapped to the full potential by experienced programmers, the PC-Engine even left Amiga computers behind in comparison. In 1987 and beyond, the machine was second to none.
