We need a purpose as well, most of us have several members on our contact lists in IM already. We need a reason to make the chat more important, like maybe a weekly debate or brainstorming session for the site, something everyone will be interested in.

Absolutely, but we need a way to get them in the door. Often while the chat is up several members are on the forum but don't stop by.
