Aren't people who write fan fiction almost as low at the nerd ladder as furries end cosplayers?

I'd say they're one notch above treckies.

Well, maybe a notch above the trekkies that dress up like data and go to conventions, but not the regular trekky that only watches the show.

this site has a lot of crappy fanfics, and weeding out the good ones is a large pain in the ass.
If anyone likes Metroid check out this site and look at its fan fiction section, its great: www.classicgaming.com/mdb I highly suggest the series titled "The Best There Was", although it isnt finished yet.

I've read a few fanfics here and there. To my experience the best ones aren't on a fanfic site. Just random people write them and post them on boards or on their own site.
