Weather balloons are cheap. This stunt would likely only cost them maybe $2,000.

Oops, that's what happens when I barely read the article. Still, your game going into space, even by a balloon, still seems kinda far-fetched.
On another note, it's nice that the only thing that makes this different from the normal game is a tracking device. Something that gamers normally don't want in their games.

it must have some sort of protective case around it, the gps is most likely outside the game case if they kept it sealed

Yeah, and even if it lands on surface, it would be comical if they stop at a mountain peak like Everest or Mount Fuji, or maybe at the amazon jungle.
