Posted under sculptors cut clayfighter n64 nintendo rare blockbuster

Been a while since I've posted but figured I'd throw out my recent find. All my days off from work I'm taking care of our two year old while mom works. We have this routine of checking out local thrift stores and pawn shops to see if i can find some more gems to add to my ever growing video game collection. I usually hit up the same stores at least once a week sometimes more. This one day i figured i go check out the local sports cards and collectables store.

I usually don't go to this store because anytime i ever go in there she has either next to nothing or very overpriced games. Such an example would be her cheapest game being 15.95 plus TAX! Mario Partys for the N64 were priced at $79.99Cdn and Golden Eye 007 was priced at $49.95Cdn. Yeah this place is pricey but hey never knows maybe ill catch her slipping as the Game Chasers would say. So i walk into this little store which is mainly older sports cards and memorabilia with the exception of a small corner of video games consisting of nes, snes and N64 games. I browse through them and then I see a clayfighter sitting on the shelf with no price tag on it. I figured it was just the 63 1/3 one but looking a little closer i noticed it was a sculptors cut! I picked it up and had a look. Still had the blockbuster sticker on the back. I picked it off the shelf and asked the owner what she wanted for it. I was expecting a stupid price looking at what some of the other games were listed for. She asked if there was a price on it and there wasn't. She said well same as the rest than $15.95. I was like ok and put it on the table by the register. i had a quick glance over the rest  just to make sure there wasn't any more gems sitting on the shelf. So ended up getting sculptors cut for just over $17. Definitely made it worth the time to go check out the store.

I've found a few great titles lately such as Clay Fighter, Earthbound, Panic Restaurant and a Complete in the box copy of Snow Board Kids 2. Heading to Edmonton and the end of the month so hopefully can find some more good quality titles or the boxes and manuals for some of my games i have already. Take it easy

I have recently returned from a much needed retreat. We trekked halfway across the continent of North America to visit the fabled land of Oregon. Its good to be home, but at the same time, I wish I did not have to leave so quickly. I got the chance to visit two arcades on my trip, some nice places to game that are severely lacking where I live. Close to where I stayed is a fairly big tourist town near the beach, and there's a pizza place that has a big arcade attached to it. Sounds just like the pizza place on the corner we all grew up with doesn't it? The difference is that this one had a lot of cabinets, with a lot of newer games! The second arcade I visited was the well-known downtown Portland locale called Ground Kontrol.

As Hobbes' young companion once noted, mothers are the necessity of invention.  And in the gaming industry (and by industry I of course mean business), innovation means something fresh for the gamer and risk for the publisher.  We gamers are known to clamor for something new, different, interesting, and creative.  Ours is a tech-driven hobby, so naturally we want the newest, shiniest, most feature-packed thingee that's plowing ahead, breaking new ground, and showing us something we've never quite seen before.  Right?

And it's all those suit-and-ties in board meetings that are stifling and ruining our business (and by business, I of course mean industry.)  Their money-grubbing, tight-fisted pea-brains keep them from seeing the vision of artists, and instead they play it safe with brown-colored shooter release #57.  So, we just keep getting rehashes and sequels, with the occasional off-chance (often from our here-to-save-the-industry/business from itself indie sector) of shaking things up and giving us a much needed breakthrough in a Minecraft or Angry Birds.

That's our reality, yes?

Oh to be young again. Remember "school vacation?" That magical time where you could sit and play video games for several months straight, and because you still had a working metabolism you wouldn't even gain any weight. But for some of us those days are long in the rearview. Now we have things like schedules, responsibilities and beer bellies to deal with. And so our downtime is more precious. Of course that doesn't mean we lose our hobby. Instead we find new ways in which the games fill these little cracks. Rather than gaming be all we do, we find that our schedules, responsibilities and beer bellies dictate how our lives flow and somehow the games themselves seem to figure out how they fit into our lives on their own.

If you're reading this article, there's a high degree of likelihood that you like video games and think they are fun.  There's a good chance you own one or more video game consoles or platforms, with more than a dozen games to play.  It's more than a little plausible that you've spent hours pouring over your favorite video games.  If you're in my age bracket, and grew up during the 1980's and early 1990's, you might have spent a lot of time reading Nintendo Power, Sega Visions, Electronic Gaming Monthly, or any number of other magazines dedicated to video games.  It's also possible that, now as an adult, you've spent a considerable amount of time and money on video games over the years.

But the question I want to ask you is this: Have you had fun?  Have your experiences, in total, added up to what you would call "fun"?  How does one quantify fun, and what does that look like?  Is fun simply a series of feelings, or is it more than that?  While I can't claim to have all the answers, they are important questions to ask, in light of one's experiences with gaming.

A couple years ago my wife and I were fortunate enough to attend our first ever Fan Convention in Calgary, Alberta. I was very excited and prior to the event, I had my wife watch through a plethora of nerdy movies so that she would be well-versed on many of the attending celebrity guests. I knew it was something I'd enjoy, but I wasn't sure my wife would find enough to keep her entertained for the entire three days. Much to my delight, she seemed to enjoy herself as much as I did. From checking out the amazing cosplay, to taking in the often hilarious speaking panels, to meeting strange new people while waiting in line for autographs, and even embarrassing herself while speaking with her childhood crush, Sean Patrick Flanery (she was a big fan of Young Indiana Jones), we both had one of the best weekends we have ever spent together.

Much to our delight, we learned that our own city was scheduled to host a fan convention, aptly named Northern FanCon! This time though we had the unique option of attending as a vendor as opposed to a typical guest.

I'm not going to sugar coat it, I'm really pumped about attending Retro World Expo this October. Sure, I'm looking forward to the possibility of snagging a few choice titles that I don't see in my area very often, but what I'm looking forward to the most is finally meeting some of the peeps (that's what the kids are saying these days right?) here at RF Generation.  I have no doubt that many of you have already heard about the epic Collectorcast meets Playcast pajama party at Estate de Bil where I'm sure we'll be making the most of our time playing some choice video games and board games together; however, I have also heard inklings of a possible game hunting adventure or two. Sure, I'm beyond jackt (I did it again kids) about hunting games with my buds, but I have to admit, I'm a little unsure about group protocol. You see, I'm the only game collector among my group of friends in the area, I'm a lone wolf without a sense of pack mentality.

After finishing work on Beyond the Beyond, Camelot continued working with Sega on more Shining games for their ill-fated Saturn console. Camelot gaining their independence is a unique story from Sega's history; they're the only internal Sega studio that gained independence (not even AM 2 could pull that off). Camelot, and Sakuraba, finished work on Shining The Holy Ark and Sega released it worldwide in 1996. Camelot followed this with an epic three part series, all under the Shining Force III name. Only the first part in this trilogy was released outside of Japan, since the Saturn just didn't have the audience for continued support by the time the games started releasing.

Last Summer I published an article here that chronicled the current state of sports games available on PC. I decided to revisit this concept for 2015 because there's actually been some interesting developments since last year. So I don't know... maybe this will be an annual thing? So grab your favorite game-time snacks and big foam finger and let's explore the world of PC sports games in 2015 together after the break! (Spoiler: Still no new Madden game.)

Nobody is saying that the game, system, or toy that you have isn't cool or that it isn't in decent shape.  All I'm saying is that it isn't "Rare" and it most certainly isn't "Mint".

It's summertime, RFGen!  Well, in North America anyway.  For many of us, the summer season holds a lot of nostalgia, be it the warmer weather, the vacations, or the increase of free time due to school being over.  Or all of the above!  For me, summer mostly reminds me of playing video games in some form, and something as simple as waves of cottonwood seeds drifting through the breeze triggers it.  Originally, I was going to focus on one game, but the other day when driving home from work, I got a strong whiff of green grass and the leaky lawn mower that cut it and I was instantly back in 1987 playing...  Well, we will see.  For now, let me welcome you again to summertime, whatever this may mean to you, and also to this little retrospective on my own summer memories.

Gamers who grew up with consoles have been lucky over the years as far as nostalgia goes. In the last decade or two, we've seen a rise in and have been stuffed-to-the-gills with compilations of old console games. We've seen celebrations of the Atari 2600 and it's been shouted out loud that "Intellivision Lives!" We've gotten collections of Genesis carts and plenty of various arcade era releases.

But what if you are nostalgic for early PC gaming? Certainly there's plenty out there to explore. Services like GOG and DotEmu do a great job of bringing old games to a newer generation of gamers. And heck, if you know your way around DOSBox or Windows compatability settings, there's usually very little stopping you from finding old CD-ROMs or even 3.5" floppy discs of your favorites titles of yesteryear. Yet having said all that, it's nice to see a publisher throwing a bunch of their classics together and offering them up in a nice bundle. And that's just what the 3D Realms Anthology is.
