Early this year I decided to take on the (perhaps foolish) task of cataloging the variety of space sim games and the myriad of space adventure-RPG games (think StarFlight and Star Control 2) with the purpose of starting a blog centered on those games. Three months into it and I find that I need to step back a bit and breathe.  I need a palette cleanser. I thought I would take a look at what the NES and Famicom had to offer in the space sim/space adventure-RPG genres, but after three solid weeks of research and I decided to let it drift free.  Perhaps another week.  Instead I decided to focus on something fun, challenging, and space-themed...enter Solar Jetman: The Hunt for the Golden Warship.  It contains shield management, simulated gravity, and the ability to escape the destruction of your spacecraft as a tiny spaceman to fight another day. The game was also an important title that helped transition me from Star Voyager on the NES to StarFlight on Genesis, which I also rediscovered during my earlier mentioned research cataloging task.  Please join me while I take a retrospective look at Solar Jetman and I hope the game fairs better than Star Voyager did.

It's back! Another instalment of People of RF Gen. This time I thought I might take the time to get to know bombatomba. He's been an active member here for quite some time, was recently recruited last year as a staff writer, and has contributed to my interest in indie games. Did you hack and slash your way to victory as Sir Daniel Fortesque? Did the Dark Knight restore order to Gotham City? Thank you everyone who joined us in March and played MediEvil and Batman: Arkham Origins.

Now it's time to unveil our next adventures to the RF Generation community.

For the April Retro Playthrough, we journey through the Mushroom Kingdom to once again rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser in the classic Nintendo 64 title Paper Mario.  Bowser has stolen the Star Rod, which grants the wishes of its user and renders Bowser invincible, and it is up to Mario to locate the seven Star Spirits, defeat Bowser, and restore peace to the Mushroom Kingdom.  In what began as a sequel to Super Mario RPG for the SNES, Paper Mario is a unique blend of familiar Mario platforming and turn-based RPG mechanics.  Do you have what it takes to foil Bowser's latest scheme and save the Mushroom Kingdom from turmoil?  Join us in playing Paper Mario and find out!

Back to work and to my usual routines

Been back to work for a couple of weeks now and wow is life ever busy. Been working lots of overtime and busy with the little guy every evening. Been trying to rearrange the house so its more convent for him to play and hang out while i move all my video game stuff to one of the spare bedrooms downstairs. Ive been trying to figure out an easy and nice way to "show off " or display all my video games. Haven't found a shelf so i think I'm going to test my carpenter skills out and trying building some custom shelving units to house my collection. Everything i find the shelves are too deep and not enough shelves to actually hold everything.
But in building shelves it requires time , which something that i don't have much at all to work with. Right now the little guy is having a nap and then the wife is working so it give me some time to browse the classifieds and surf Facebook for some deals to be found which are few and far in between. How does your significant other deal with your video game collecting hobby. Its funny because since we've had the kid I've sold my toys like my sled and dirt bikes and live a pretty quiet lifestyle. Lately especially since I've been back from school my collection has gained some traction and has grown quite a bit? Do they embrace your collection or hate it? Did pick up a few games last week though like

     - TMNT Tournament Fighters
     - Zelda, Link to the past
     - Biker Mice From Mars
     - Mega Man 5
     - and a bunch of other ones that i don't feel like typing out.....

All in all I've got a lot of work cut out to do like the shelving and the room in general. Its been coming together really well so far. i'm still trying to figure out all this forum and script and trying to insert pictures so bear with me on that. Haven't done much of it since high school .  Another thing that makes it hard up here in good ole Fort St John is that there isn't much of a gaming community like in PG and other areas that I've seen. Theres a lot of competition and a lot of reselling going on so for someone to find a deal is next to impossible. So if anyone actually reads these blogs and is from the Fort St John area then hit me up. Little guys waking so back to daddy duty. Take Care  , few pics of my game room for now .

Now that tickets are on sale for the RetroWorld Expo (https://retroworldexpo.com/tickets/) we need to focus on booking the best selection of Exhibitors that we can.  It sounds easy, right?  Get together a great big list of all of the best video game, comic, tabletop etc, stores in the area and let them know what we are all about.  But, as a group of retro enthusiasts who attend these kinds of events, we wanted to broaden the scope a bit.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is the fourth game in the series of cooperative RPGs starring Nintendo's two main plumber brothers. It was released around the world in July and August of 2013. Dream Team was developed by longtime series developer AlphaDream, which has made every Mario & Luigi game. I have not played any games in this series since Superstar Saga, the first one, but I've heard about how great the two DS games are. So when I picked up my 3DS, I wanted to jump back into the series with the newest entry.

The story of Dream Team is about the team from the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toadsworth, and random Toads, all going on a vacation to Pi'illo Island.  The island was once inhabited by talking pillow people and has now become a wonderful, tourist trap. It turns out that the Pi'illo people have actually been trapped in the Dream World by the evil Antasma. After freeing the Pi'illo Prince, Dreambert, Mario & Luigi go on an adventure around the island to help wake the Pi'illo and stop Antasma and his familiar allies.

As many of you on the site know, I'm an avid collector of Atari 2600 and NES titles. While I'm going for a complete, licensed collection of the later, I am very realistic about my collecting goals for the 2600. For those of you who love and collect for this system like I do, you know that this goal is impossible for the Average Joe. During the days of the 2600, licensing laws were quite more lackadaisical and it seems like anyone and everyone with programming skills tried their hand at developing games for the 2600. Many of these games saw small production numbers, and this has resulted in astronomical prices in today's market due to the high demand of serious Atari collectors. And let's face it, I'm not one of those guys who can justify paying ridiculous amounts just to have a game in my possession. On the other hand, I'm not the kind of guy who wants to play an emulated version of a game on his PC. So what's a guy like me to do?

I have a few games in my collection on this site however when searching for a few of them they did not come back as the right game or region. If you check my collection you will see. One of them is not even on this site: "Powerdrome" for original X-Box. Please can someone see to this because it is annoying and is a pain to see that some of my games are put down incorrectly. Is it just because of region or what?

We all have about a billion games in our collection.  I hesitate to call it a backlog because it makes it sound like work.  Though, if you are playing games just to get through them, checking them off a list (proverbial or otherwise) it CAN feel like work instead of fun.  How do we decide what to play next?  A better question would be: How SHOULD we decide what to play next?

This is a topic that's been on my mind for quite some time now, and with the release of the PS4 exclusive The Order: 1886 and the fiasco surrounding its length I'm going to chime in with my opinion concerning the matter of a game's length.

I probably think about game length every day. As a Community Playthrough leader, I can't nominate a game that is too long; similarly if it's too short, we won't play a game unless it's part of a competition. Consequently, I spend a lot of time browsing a website called How Long to Beat. This site has become an extremely valuable resource in selecting games not only for the community, but also for my personal gaming. While this may seem trivial to many, some people get really bent out of shape if a new video game turns out to be too short.

Why does this exist? I understand educational games, but throwing in a huge, well-established character just seems like a lazy cash grab. A good educational game should be able to stand up on its own by mixing good teaching tools with fun. Mario's Time Machine fails as a teaching tool.

Mario's Time Machine was developed and published by The Software Toolworks for the Super Nintendo and MS-DOS. Radical Entertainment developed the NES port with Nintendo publishing this version themselves. When this game was released in the early 90s, it was not the first Mario themed educational game; it was preceded by Mario is Missing! (which had the same developer). As you might be able to discern from the title, Mario's Time Machine is a game meant to teach history. However, I find that as a teaching tool the game fails. As an adult who understands and knows the basic historical content presented in this game, it is extremely easy to get through and beat quickly. The basic gameplay involves you having historical artifacts with an attached document with information on it; this document has blanks in it that you must fill. As an adult, you'll likely know most, if not all, of the answers without thinking too much. However, if you're a kid, you may have trouble filling in these blanks. Other than context clues in the document, the game does little to actually teach history beyond blind guesswork and memorization.

Posted under game room, collecting nes ones game room master system gameboy everything

Well back home from college. My little guy is getting so big and with that comes changes. Just moved all my gaming paraphernalia out of my recreation room and into a bedroom in my house. Decided it was time to let the little guy have free run without me hovering over his back protecting all the carts from being hurled across the room. So let the moving begin, spent the better part of two days moving arranging furniture, mini fridge  bar shelf, and countless other things including my ever growing game collection.
It just dawned on me that during my 7 weeks going to college I've accumulated a tonne of gaming stuff. Ive found things that i didn't realize even existed and bought other things in better condition to replace what I've already accumulated. I'am no infinite book of knowledge when it comes to gaming I'm just a guy getting his feet wet in the huge world of collecting. It always amazes me how much some people know/ One of these guys is Crabmaster2000. Got to talk little to him the other day when i visited the store one last time before i headed north back home. But anyways back to the subject matter.
Wow, theres a lot . stacks of games , systems , accessories and everything else and i don't have enough room to store everything the way i want. Been to Walmart and Canadian tire and can't find a decent media shelf to help display / store all my stuff. Everything is in complete chaos right now but hopefully it will be sorted soon. Wondering if it is worth building something custom or keep looking around and see what i can find but signing off and happy collecting
