I'd like to start a discussion on this: what do yall think about carrying cases and the lot being in the DB?

This came up before when we were discussing NFC figures and it did make me wonder how this type of thing qualifies for tracking. The only accessories in the DB that don't directly interact with a game or enhance gameplay are carrying cases and portable system covers etc. I think drawing clear lines will only help keep the DB organized and set standards so it's worth discussing.

In my opinion, we should do away with cases. While some of these products are licensed, they fall more in line with merchandise. My thinking is, if the accessory does not
1)Transmit/Read data
2)Use direct power from system
3)Act as/Interpret input from player
4)Otherwise improve gameplay
then it shouldn't be added.

What do you think?

i second this and agree with your 4 standards for what should be added. a carrying case can always be added as extra media to the hardware it carries. if merchandise of any kind were allowed it would open a floodgate of crap into the database.

I like keeping track of them. Undecided
They are part of the collection.

Also to add more, I wouldn't be so opposed to keeping things like the N64 and TG16 1st party cases. But then there's a generic CD rack in the DB and tons upon tons of GB/DS cases with limited info. So exceptions might be plausible.

I would say 1st party home console cases only. But not everyone might agree with where I set the line because it's sort of arbitrarily decided.

Definitely arbitrary, because there are a lot of popular 3rd party cases. You may want to limit it to licensed cases, or cases that specifically target a game console.
