My post in the media forum that I was listening to Mega Man 2 got me thinking about great video game soundtracks in general.  Mega Man 2 definitely had some classics, but it's still not my all-time favorite.  I do however have that soundtrack as well thanks to NSF, and am listening to it now.  It is for none other than Castlevania II.  This soundtrack eats hand grenades for breakfast because it is so awesome.

Other games with soundtracks that really stood out to me a lot include most of the Castlevania games, several Mega Man games, Chrono Cross, Ocarina of Time, Vice City, and to some extent even Super Metroid.

So, what are your favorite game soundtracks?

I liked the Super Metroid soundtrack.
Need for Speed Underground had a good soundtrack.
I like Mortal Kombat, II, 3 and 3 Ultimate soundtracks.
Top Gear for SNES had some good music.
Lufia 2 had alot of great music, it really set the mood same goes for ChronoTrigger and FF3.

Vice City i have to agree had some great songs on it
Halo and Halo  both have great music. The opening theme for Halo 2 is great if you have ever heard the whole thing (i don't remember if Halo's was as long)

I lliked the music from both Tetris and Columns. It just seemed to work perfectly for some reason.

The Donkey Kong Country series had great music as well. It was very well orchastrated the same goes for Super Smash Brothers. Some songs on ther are goofy but others are good listening.

And as for games like Donkey Konga and the DDRs and games that fall into this gaminbg category alot of the music that they license is some top notch stuff.

Super Mario RPG had a pretty god soundtrack too. Actually that could be said for most if not all of the Mario games.
Sonic is the same same i like the technoish beat in many of the songs.

There is probably alot more gaming soundtracks i like to put in herew but that is good for now.

Tetris and Tetris 2 did indeed have perfect music for what they were.  Pretty catchy by itself, too.

You're also right about the Donkey Kong Country (and Land) series.  Great stuff that worked perfectly in the game.  That's one that I can't listen to as much of by itself though.

When I made my post above, I knew I was forgetting one that was really good and really obvious, and I finally thought of what it was: Tempest 2000.  You could give it to the average person to listen to and they'd have no idea it came from a video game.  It's just darn good techno.

I need to get my hands on that soundtrack.

I think al 3 songs in Crazy Taxi were ok too.
Tha same goes for the song or 2 from Marvel vs Capcom 2.
Although that could get very repetative after hours of play.

Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2 have some of the best soundtracks of all time.  The Metal Gear Solid 2 intro music was excellent, but there isnt much other great music in the game.  Donkey Kong Country 2 is also one of my absolute favorites.  As for music from a more recent game,  Minish Cap had some very nostalgic zelda remakes.  Oops, almost forgot Earthbound.  On a side topic, has anyone ever played a certain part of a game just to hear the music?  (back before downloadable sound files were available) (I played the DKC2 boss and bramble levels countless times)

Some of my faves:

Chrono Trigger
Sonic Series
Zelda 64: OoT
Streets Of Rage 2
Soleil (Crusader of Centy)

I'd say my overall favourite has to go to Ristar though.  It's a very underrated game in the first place, but the musical score is simply great.  A nice touch is that on one level, you only get the whole of the background theme by progressing through the stage and successfully transporting metronomes to a number of birds you meet on the way.
