John Stockton would be the most famous basketball player from my city and that went to Gonzaga (who lost to Saint Mary's in the WCC sadly, but they will still be at least a #2 seed in the tournament I think). But the Jazz name is funny for Utah, its a unique name at least. It is Jazz because the team started in New Orleans which is indeed more famous for its jazz music scene. They never changed the name. For some reason NBA teams don't change the name as much when they move cities like in other sports. Like the Vancouver Grizzlies are still the Memphis Grizzlies, the LA Clippers were the San Diego Clippers, and funniest of all the LA Lakers being from Minneapolis, Minnesota being full of lakes and LA being famous for its warm weather and also not too many lakes as compared to Minnesota.

Several decades after the departure of the Jazz to SLC, The Charlotte Hornets skipped town for (hopefully) greener pastures in The Big Easy. A couple years after that, Charlotte got another NBA franchise, the Bobcats. After the passage of several more years, the New Orleans Hornets decided their mascot wasn't badass enough, so they renamed themselves after one of the most intimidating avians ever to take to the skies. The Bobcats then called dibs on the discarded team moniker, making themselves the new Charlotte Hornets.


BTW let's not forget San Diego's original NBA expansion franchise: the Rockets, probably the only NBA team that didn't need to be renamed to be a reference to its new host city. San Diego had some defense industry contractors developing ICBMs at the time of the team's establishment, and Houston is where NASA's Mission Control center is based.
