I've made friends with my N64, which I've not really used much before.

It's always sat there, in the corner, it's purpose purely to test carts for swapping / trading. I've never, ever got on with the controller. I still think it sucks (please, recommend me an alternative, that does not involve modding).

The games I have for it are;

Mario Kart 64
Diddy Kong Racing
Wave Racer
Castlevania
Kobe Bryan NBA
wcw nwo revenge
Turok
Turok 2
Goldeneye
yoshis story
supersar soccer
wwf war zone
super mario 64
quake 2
world cup 98
rainbow six
f1 world grand prix 2
mortal kombat 4
vrally

Some questions. Why do my carts often not work, time and time again when In try, and then they do work another time?

On games like Mario Racing, is there a way to skip the tedious little films?

I was doing a torunament last night., and at the end there was an award ceremony, and no matter what button I pressed, I couldn't make the damn film end, is this usual?

How the hell aree you supposed to play Golden Eye with  that trigger where it is?

The only thing I can think of for the games sporadically working is dirty carts or a dirty or faulty pin connector.

I'm not a big fan of the N64 controller either. I don't like the fact that you need to hold it differently depending on which game you are playing.

You do seem to have most of the best games for the N64. Goldeneye, Super Mario 64, Mario Cart 64. Throw in the Zelda's, Perfect Dark and Super Smash Bros. and you're good to go.

There aer multiple control styles for Goldeneye.
I don't remember what the default setting is called but you move forwards and backwards and strafe with the thumbstick, shoot with Z, open doors with B and switch weapons with A (those 2 might be switched) R zooms hen zoomed C down crouches.

That IMO was the easiest setting to use.
But there are at least 2 other one controller settings and then there are 3 or 4 dual controller settnigs.

But if you don't like Z for shooting IMO the best placement for it you can always try one of those other ones.

I knew a about 10 people who all always played on Goodhead setting.
So whenever i played with them they would get pissed because i would waste their time changing my controller settings and then when i finally lost they would have to change it back.

Right, well then I won't play Mario Cart anymore. When I play a game, I play a game, for hours. I can't stand waiting for that damned film all the time. :-(

Maybe I'll give up with the N64 again soon, I'll see how I get on with Goldeneye

Nope, i;'ve given up. If it let me use the left directional pad to look, and the right to move, or if it had two analogue contollers, I could get on with it.

But, the only set up I could get on with, meant I was holding the controller in a very uncomfortable way, and part of me that playes Half-Life, Red Faction et al, the auto-pilot part of me, that takes over when I fire, run for cover, fire again, especially when retreating and firing, meant I kept looking up, and down, unexpectedly as I fumbled the controlls.

I had a concentration headache, far too early on.

So, whilst I will play some games on the N64, I won't play many. I shall be very selective.

I quite liked Pilot Wings, which I've now sold, but most of the games on the list are gonna be trade bait.

I can't see that I will ever be happy with the controller, and will always be complaining  for  a lot of the action games, which I mostly won't play.

You could look into an adapter.
That way you could use a controller more to your likings.

Or like you said you could just trade 'em all off.
