Well I went in (stupidly, I mean c'mon it's Spielberg doing an alien movie for gods sake!) expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised. I wish it had been about twenty minutes longer though. The ending was a little too abrupt. I gave it an 8/10 at IMDB. Quality Spielberg.

I thought it was a pretty good movie too, however it is *nothing* like the book, apart from the opening line and the ultimate demise of the martians. But I guess this is to be expected, no? If you consider it as a completely seperate entity from the book, then it was an outstanding movie, very suspensful. Did it remind you of half life 2 at all? (The final scene seemed to be almost straight out of HL2, taking down the tripod/strider in the middle of an old city/industrial plant.)
I would recommend it wholeheartedly if it weren't for the pure insanity of Tom Cruise, even though he still does a decent job.
*SPOILER*
The river of people was WAY overdone.
Plus, how in the san hell did the boy make it back home alive? You litreally see him ingulfed in flames about half way through the movie? And how would he have made it back first if he went to fight with the army?

I haven't seen the movie yet but it does look aweseome.
I saw Ebert and Ropert bitching about it though and i guess guy got daughter back by climbing in the alien tripod kicking some ass stealing her back and running away like a pansy.
Alright maybe he didn't kick ass but he stole the girl back out of the tripod.
O ya and you could tel just from the trailer of the movie that it was going to be nothing like the book. Knownig what we know today i don't think people would have enjoyed it as much if they left it the way the book was.
Because we would have nuked the shit out of the alien no problem. That and people wouldn't have been near the ships that landed in the book.
Just ALOT of stuff would have been totally differnt in todays times. And i still don't think it woulda worked very well filmed in the past.

With Tom Cruise in the movie, I couldn't help myself from laughing. My mental plot for this movie was that the warriors of Xenu had invaded Earth and Tom Cruise and the rest of the Scientologists were going to try to save themselves. It made for a much more humorous movie.
Tom Cruise being in this movie definitely in my opinion pulled down the movie. He is too attached to Scientology to be taken seriously anymore.
PS- If anyone here is a scientologist then I think the religion is a perfectly great religion and that I would join it if I was not already Catholic. But believe me scientologists, I have failed your stress test and I do need to release some stress.

Maybe mild SPOILERS
I did not like this movie. I would give it a 5 out of 10 and most of those points would come from the special effects. First of all I wished Dakota Fannings character would die about 5 minutes into the movie. For the rest of the movie I kept hoping that this stupid little girls screaming would get her stepped on by a tripod.
Secondly there was way too much scientology garbage in this movie, both Cruise and Spielberg practise that religion and it shows, in abundace.
The part with Tim Robbins was way too long.
Forget how the boy survived, I thought Tom Cruises character was so stupid he should have been killed in about every other scene because of his actions. He must have been one lucky dude...

Cincinnati, *berg,
Schlinder's List
,
Munich
, all these things would imply that he is Jewish, and indeed he is.
Apparently Spielberg's wife was a former scientologist.

...hmm, perhaps I am mistaken. I certainly am not an athority on Spielbergs life
. I did think I had heard somewhat reciently he was practicing Scientology though. And I think you are right about the Jewish thing, Its even referanced in an Adam Sandler song.

Cruise and Travolta are the only two celebs that I know of who are Scientologists.
I don't know why being from Cincinnati would imply that he is Jewish. Maybe if he was from NYC, but Cincy?

Cincinnati has a surprsingly large Jewish Population, and one of the few Hebrew Colleges in the Nation. In fact, Hebrew Union College was the first Jewish College in the New World, and its founder, Issac Wise, was a leader in the Reform Judaism movement, and is considered one of the people who helped bring reform Judaism into the mainstream.
