Is it necessary to spend $20 bucks on one or is just a standard RJ45 Network crossover cable?

Don't know. Never tried it.

Is Ray still thinking about doing the system link for our next Halo 2 session?

yea...just use any old crossover cable....before we learned the joys of just hooking the 'box into the schools network, we used a cheap $5 crossover b/t 2 consoles at college

I believe you can also connect systems thru a Hub with straight cables, if you don't have a cross-over.  That should also lets you connect more then two systems together!

I have used a hub and standard cables as well as a home made crossover cable. People that spend the money on the offical one are just foolish, even a generic crossover cable is 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the xbox one.
