HUMAN EVENTS asked a panel of 15 conservative scholars and public policy leaders to help us compile a list of the Ten Most Harmful Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries.  Each panelist nominated a number of titles and then voted on a ballot including all books nominated. A title received a score of 10 points for being listed No. 1 by one of our panelists, 9 points for being listed No. 2, etc. Appropriately, The Communist Manifesto, by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, earned the highest aggregate score and the No. 1 listing.

The title Das Kapital reminds me of a shirt I saw that some kid make.  It said capitalism in Russian (капитализм) with the K similar to the anarchy sign so many skater kids like to sport.  It made me smile.

I hate you internet.  Even more than you hate Russian characters.

I'm kind of surprised the Anarchist's Cookbook isn't a part of the list.

Yay for Mill and Darwin getting honorable mentions. I bet the Utilitarians of the world were extremely happy with seeing "On Liberty" getting an honorable mention, which really isn't that bad. I have a feeling that a bunch of fundamentalist Christian Bastards voted on the worst books of all time.

Books aren't harmful, just like games aren't harmful. The ideologies derived from books and the actions that they create are what is truly harmful. Books are only a means to the end.

The Holy Bible has caused way worse things than any of the books on that list.  Of course it wasn't written in the 19th or 20th centuries, but I still wanted to point it out as having horrible side-effects.

I'm not.  It was written by the CIA and is more of a joke than anything.

This is a pretty good quote.  I'm of the same opinion.

About the same way GTA causes kids to run out & have sex.

Alot of human acts have been attributed to misinterpreting the bible, or some crazy who's 'heard the voice of God' but honestly, these acts are not caused by the bible, or any book for that matter, they are the acts of humans.

The bible is the oldest, and it's been a topic of debate for centuries, so it's the scapegoat for alot of the casualties on this world, but it is no worse than any of those listed in the link above.

Really I can't think of any one instance where the bible is responsible for millions & millions of lives being lost, where by example, the first three books on that list were the inspiration for these three gents who ultimately killed an unfathomable amount of people on thier quest for power.

No, because it implies that socialism is to blame for all those murders.

YAY!  Almost there.  Now if someone would kindly draw the comparison between the bible and socialism being not responsible, we might all just grow a little bit inside.

*edit
come on everyone, group hug!

I agree with that but like Trader Jake said it is the ideologies derived from books and the actions that they create are what is truly harmful.
