I saw that, and as a Catholic, I in no way find it appalling.

It's funny, but it does suggest arrogance on the part of Sony, as lots of things can be construed from the ad.

I think everyone needs to chill out and stop being offended by symbology of this nature, and a whole bunch of other silly things.  And I mean everyone.

-You won't find a Sun in Canada or US with topless Sunshine girls, whereas other parts of the world you can.
-Swearing and occasionally nudity is not always censored on Canadian prime-time TV
-Video game violence is not real violence.  Get over it.
-If Jesus were alive today I'm sure he'd own a PS2
-Alcohol and pornography are against the law in some parts.  Thankfully not here Smiley
-Marijuana is legal in some parts, but not others

The entire world is not Chrsitian.  How many Hindu's do you think get offended by an American cartoon (Simpsons) portraying a recurring character voiced by an actor who probably ins't Hindu as such (Apu)?  The answer could be alot, yet nothing has changed.

This is just stupidity.

This is it. It doesn't look that offending to me. The guy doesn't like like the way people nowadays like to portray Jesus. It's just some dude with a crown of thorns.

Hey Arr, is that the full ad? It looks like it may be cropped.

If you could please post the full ad, that would be great. Doing so would keep everything in context for purposes of the discussion.

No that's not the whole thing.  The bottom of the ad says "Dieci anni di passione" which translates "10 years of passion".  Passion being a play on the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ to Christians.

Taking the whole thing in context, I can see how it's offensive to Catholics/Christians, I can see why they're upset.  There would be bombs exploding right now if the PS3 ad was a depiction of Mohammad with an equal play on words regarding Islam and the PS3.

But as an outsider, I do not understand the ad or what Sony is trying to say by it.  Pretty strange.

I tried several times to get the image to show in my post, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but I think you can click on the link to see the full ad.

As far as marketing ploys go, this was a smart move by Sony. By running the ad in Italy (with Rome being the HQ of the Roman Catholic Church) they assure themselves visibility with the crown of thorns ad. Which in turn would lead to the outrage over the imagery. Essentially, Sony now has obtained significant information regarding the Italy demographic and who will notice their advertizing in the future (note to Sony advertizing agency:. Insert new ad *here*, it will get noticed).

So it comes down to:
1. Place cheaply produced and potentially offensive ad *here*.
2. See what happens.
3. If response is significant and negative, apologize.
4. Place expensively produced ad in the exact same place since you know it will succeed at getting a significant audience.
