They were drinking Malt liquor.  It is basically beer (lager) with a more malty flavor to it and a higher alcohol content, and I do believe that it was Old English (or Old E).  Malt Liqour is usually verrrry cheap.

And yeah, your right about most Americans not liking ale.  We drink it, but it usually has to be ice cold like a lager.

5 to 6% is what I generally drink.

Altough I do like Tennets Super which is 9%.

I'm really not American bashing here, but your mainstream beers suck.
Budwieser, Coors, Miller - I don't like it. Could be becuase you have rice as an ingredient?

Anyway, us Brits are complict cos it's brewed here under licence. And I have had some imported brewed in the USA beer which was very nice.

Original Czeck Budweiser is nice. Smiley

Mind you, I don't mind a drop of Jack Daniels whiskey.

I've been to Germany, I really liked it. Smiley Went camping in Belgium and followed the Mossel river along to Koblenz in Germany where it meets the Rhine.

feel free to bash American beer. they do suck. most notably the major labels, Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Michelob.

It's all about marketing and not taste. the thought is that a bland generic taste is going to appeal to a wider audience. It must be true because all those labels are hugely popular and all taste about the same. It's for getting drunk and nothing else, certainly not flavor. How else would you explain Light beer? It's virtually unpalatable yet sells like nobody's business.

I don't drink often but when I do I enjoy a nice craft beer or import. something with some flavor and variety. I prefer the darker beers too, porters and stouts.

no Bud Light for me thank you.

For all of you out there looking for a decent import (from Germany), look into Lowenbrau.   It is the best beer I have ever had, and it isn't too hard on the wallet either, like most imports.
