For the past year or so, I've not had my radio on in my car at all, except for an occasional football game. This is due largely to the fact that 97X went off the air in Cincy (online only now), ClearChannel or other equally sucky corporations own nearly every sucky station that broadcasts here, and the other station I always liked - WMKV - has not been accessible to me because of the part of town I live in.
Since I recently moved and changed schools, I can once again get 89.3 in my car. They are a big band radio station run by seniors for seniors out of Maple Knoll Retirement Community. The residents run the station, do the programming, and are the on-air personalities. They also (if memory serves correctly) have the largest collection of big band music in the world.
If you like big band music, you will love WMKV. Luckily for any of you who are outside of Cincinnati (or who can't get 89.3 on the dial), they also broadcast online, 24/7. Yeah - seniors that know more about web audio than probably any of us tech geeks.
Of course as a station run by and for seniors, a lot of the pieces between music are about prescription drugs, retirement, medicaid, etc. If you ask me, it's a whole lot better than shock jocks, loud obnoxious advertisements, and stupid sound bytes.
