i love my NES.  i hate the term oldskool nintendo though.  a few months ago at school i was wearing a pac-man shirt and some random queer walks up to me and says "hey i remember that pac-man game.  i had it for the old-skool nintendo."  the next day, the same person (i had no idea who this kid was)  goes up to me and started talking about "oldskool nintendo" some more.  i finnally got pissed and told him to screw off. does anybody else notice that the more people that start collecting, the more media attention it gets, and alot of those people suck?  there a few other kids at my school that have no idea what the difference between an atari 5200, virtual boy, and turbografx-16 is but claim to love classic gaming.

I just hate people that think they know more about it than I do when they know nothing.  Granted, there's people with more NES knowledge than me, but don't act like you know more unless you can back it up.  Shit...

I agree that i hate when people try to act like they know what they are talking about and really know nothing.

But at the same time i will try to carry a convo with them and educate the ignorant should they allow me.

You guys have to remember you don't hear the old school BS because your not hanging out with kids.
Hot Topic isn't helping that any either though.

As for media exposure, sure it is going to pull in more ignorant fools but it might bring in more rich ignorant fools.
For those who had pretty good collections before it becomes a fad they can possibly make a pretty good profit Wink

i could not agree more.  there is actually someone else i know that claims to be a retro gamer when in reality he knows nothing.  he could only name 4 NES games(mario 1,2,3 and tetris) and claimed that xbox 360 was better than NES.  sounds like a "retrogamer" to me.

EDIT:  yes, hot topic isnt helping neither.  i have also heard classic gaming called "emo"  a couple of times now.  thats just fine and dandy.  classic gaming is associated with kids that cut themselves.  i guess mortal kombat made them do it.

Yea alot of classic gaming or popculture stuff has been picked up by emo fags(sorry emo's  it is true though).
I was very pissed to see an eBay auction for a Rayden Mortal kombat T-shirt with emo plastered all over it.

In anycase being a retro/classic/old "skool"(as you put it) gamer is not effected by your personal favorite system either. That is all just a matter of preference.
If you want to get technical NES isn't even anything special there was plenty of gaming goodness that started in the decade preceding it.

It is all just a matter of preception. Depending on how old you are and what you were exposed to different things are classics, different things are ancient, etc. I know plenty of people who reminisce about growing up on there SNES, Genesis, PSOnes even Dreamcasts.

Hell my girlfriends daughter will grow up and talk about her SP being her first system and being oldschool or retro in a decade.

I think your just being a little hot headed about some things though.
Why let people get you so riled up about something so trivial?

well, i dont know really.  i guess i just dont want to see something i love so much being exposed as something bad. (already happened to dungeons and dragons once or twice).  i can already see it being on my local news station (my local news station lets parents email them about things that are "bad"  and does stories about it.  i already see mario kart and mega man can give seizures.)

In reference to the original post, the term "old school" is being very overused these days with reference to just about anything from more than 5 years ago...so I agree with your annoyance with that. Personally, I prefer the term "throwback" when describing something from years past which is still respected today.

As far as being riled up by what others think, I agree with Izret in that it's not worth getting upset over it. And it's not worth arguing about with the idiots you may have to deal with. A motto I live by is: "Never argue with an idiot because they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.". I don't know who said it, but it makes a lot of sense.

Good luck.

The term old school is miles better than old skool at least.

When i think throwback i think of team jerseys.

I hear that completely.  I knew a guy in high school who decided to tell me he knew more about games and gaming than I did.  So we pushed questions back and forth (mines were about things like "first handheld system with carts" and the like, which he was absolutely lost on), and he stumped me on a few questions... all of which were about the first Resident Evil game.  So I asked him...

"What's the name of the PRODUCER of the Resident Evil series?"

He went dead silent.  And didn't claim to know ANYthing about games (to me anyway) after that.  I turned back to him after a few seconds and told him...

"By the way, it's Shinji Mikami, ass."

He decided to stay away from me. :-D

But yeah.  I hate it when people call things "the Sega" or "the Nintendo" or any of that.  I make a point to inform them of just which system they're probably talking about.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much, if your getting grief at school over being a gamer wait until you get a job and the rest of the staff find out. 9 hour days of make believe stories of past achievements, which have obviously never occured, games which never existed and then there's of course the constant question of "why do you buy stuff for 20 year old computers, I have a 360, I therefore must obviously be better than you".

You try and educate, but there's only so much you can do.

Now, I don't claim to be a hardcore retro gamer. I just like playing old games. I'm the same way with music. I enjoy certain songs but don't usually care about the background or story behind the artist. I have ten Pink Floyd Albums but don't know much about the band. I'd feel stupid wearing a T-Shirt showing an inflatable pig saying "Blow Me".

Things like "old school Nintendo" or "THE Sega" really annoy me.

When I saw this post, I was amused but annoyed. I only got into collecting old games about a year and a half ago but I don't like how anything older than the PS2 is seen as cool because it's "different" and seen as rebelious to modern games.

In another post, someone posted a picture of themselves and said something like "I didn't buy the Dreamcast in the background in a pawn shop, I've had it since it was current." Uhhh. Ok? Why does that matter? As long as they enjoy it, it doesn't matter where or when they got it.

Hey, Duck Hunt! I remember that on old school Nintendo! Shooting the dog was the shizz. Did anyone else try doing that? [/unique individuality]

I don't collect games to be different. I buy them because I like the variety you get from ten different consoles, instead of the current three (or four if you count the 360 (Then there are handhelds)). That, and it's become a habit.

Edit: Bleh. I go off on non-sensical and possibly contradictory rants when it's late.

It doesn't bother me one bit. I like to talk video games with anyone who even seems slightly interested. =) I seem like a weirdo at many pawns and thrifts...they all know me as the Nintendo Guy. lol.
