And she was in it at the time!!!!!  She's home and doing OK, pretty sore, shaken up and heavily medicated but all the tests at the hospital were negative so she should be OK.

She was driving on the main street in our little town and stopped because the car in front of her was turning left.  She looked in the rearview mirror and saw the truck coming up on her way to fast.  She turned to the right to attempt to go around the car that was turning but didn't have enough time and the truck hit her and pushed her van into a tree.  We are counting our blessings that she came out as well as she did and that none of our kids were in the van when it happened (she was on the way to their school when she was hit)

Good God, glad she's OK.  Wrecks suck, of course.  But when you're hit by a semi, that adds a whole new level of suck...and really glad the kids weren't with her!

Glad she's okay. I drive a semi, and I hate to think of what would happen if I hit someone.

What's a semi? It's a type of house in Britain.

I think that's what bum-man means. No wonder the car was written off...

Or a lorry.

I was once stopped on the motorway because the slip road was clogged. A lorry came speeding up behind me and had to swerve onto the hard shoulder. When they stopped, the front of it was a couple of cars ahead. That was quite worrying. The driver was using his mobile, of course. Roll Eyes

I got ran into on the motorway once, by a car not a lorry, but that was bad enough.

There was my mate Phil and myself in my car (a Saxo), going to Crystal Palace to watch the footy. We were on the M1 near Luton, in the fast lane, and all of the traffic stopped suddenly. I slammed on a was a midges dick away from crashing into a Jag in front of me. The next thing I know I look in the rear view mirror, hear a screeching of tires and a car slammed into the back of me. The force of it pushed me from the third lane, across the other lanes and on to the hard shoulder. We both got out of the car from the passenger side, and I saw the car which had crashed into me, which was a Renault Clio driven by a woman. Her car was a write off with smoke coming from the engine and was a real mess, behind her another three cars had also crashed.

I was really shitting it wondering what the back of my car was going to look like, when I looked all that was wrong was a cracked brake light and scuffed bumper. The police came took my details, looked at my car and told me to crack on. I drove the rest of the way in to London, watched the footy (which we won 2-0) and drove all the way back home to Accy, which would have been about 400 miles.

When I got home my Dad looked at my car and he said all of the rear end had crumpled and the wheel arches had moved to being about 1cm from touching my tires. If I'd have gone over a bump at some speed, which would have been possible with 400 miles of motorway travel, it would have shredded my back two tires. So in a way I was pretty lucky.

This is only part one of this story however, I may continue if the demand is out there...

A lorry is what you would call it there!!

Thanks for the well wishes.  Now that it appears she is going to be ok I am starting to get mad about the huge hassle this is going to be.  The truck driver was ticketed and totally at fault according to the cop I talked to but I still have to deal with the insurance and get her a new vehicle.  What a pain in the ass this is going to be just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A lorry:

A write off:

A write off is determined by your insurance company as to whether or not your car is deemed worthy enough to have it repaired or not. If they feel the car is beyond or not worth repairing it will be "written off".

Anyway expect all you Americans to begin using these slang terms I've been providing you all with today. There's more of them in SFS' pub crawl thread.

Now, when you say your wife was driving a van, do you mean one of these?
