I guess I just don't get it. I did some research on the game"... I get the whole point of a MMO experience is interacting with people.  But this game doesn't have an objective other than to live the life of your avatar character and spend real money on pointless in game stuff.  Can someone explain the appeal?

ugh don't get me started on Second Life, i hate the idea.
What makes it worse is that they're trying to implement it into my Multimedia design course at Art college, as they see it as a good form of advertising which should be studied... fair point, but i wanna be focusing on design, not some CG world.....
All ive seen of it seems boring, dull and pointless... Buy shoes for your avatar, why not go buy some real shoes!?

[/end rant]

Reminds me of an article Shin Evil Leon showed me. I'll try and find it later.

P.S. Someone next to me in the library is playing 2nd life.

That article is from PWOT and I think we've discussed it here before. Here's the link: http://www.pointlesswaste...e.com/games/wowworld.html

Look, minding what I said before about Second Life being incredibly gay, it is important to keep an eye on it. There is almost no doubt that the future of video gaming and the internet may lie with Second Life.

Linden labs has stated multiple times that they intend to make the Second Life code publicly available in the future and part of the plan is also to make modded areas and servers available through the network they already have. I cannot possibly underline the importance of that devlopment boldly enough.

For those of you who know nothing about metaverses or technological singularity, i'll make it simple. Second Life is the primitive beginning of the Matrix (yeah, like the movie). It is already eerily similar to the metaverse described in Snow Crash, a book which heavily influenced the movie The Matrix.

Even though it's really queer now, it is history in the making and it could get better later.

I honestly don't see a future for Second Life, not in a massive scale way as just described anyway. In terms of people captured by it, it's dwarfed be WOW. Once it starts ranking up game related deaths like WOW then we know it's getting somewhere.
