First off, is it Halo 1 or Halo 2?

For Halo 1, the standard pistol is the best weapon in the game. It's got long range (be sure to use the scope) and can take out someone with just a few shots.

On smaller or close-quarters maps, be sure to grab the Shotgun and as many grenades as you can find.

There is also no dual-wielding in Halo 1.

Look fast shoot faster.

I've never had a problem being at least moderately on par to people who never stop playing these games. As long as you are good with duel joysticks and can find the trigger button you should do fine.

I was in the house of the supposedly 5th best Halo 2 player in the world while in Florida. He had indeed been sponsored to go to a convention by MD and yet, while impressive with the sniper rifle, he could still be killed like all the rest.

like Phoenix said, use the pistol, aim for the head.  don't be too stingy with grenades.  The plasma pistol isn't too bad if you don't have anything better, but do try and find something useful.  BTW, a headshot with the sniper is a one-hit kill.  Headshots with the pistol take two.  Unlike other shooters, so know when to charge in and when to duck and cover.

Otherwise, practice up with a friend or sibling, as multiplayer is much different than single.  If you lack either of these you're a loser go to http://www.xbconnect.com and download their program.  It simulates LAN play over the internet.  Its a great (free) alternative to Xbox Live but can lag.
