Description
This reference work provides a comprehensive guide to popular and obscure video games of the 1970s and early 1980s, covering virtually every official U.S. release for programmable home game consoles of the pre–Nintendo NES era. Included are such systems as Arcadia 2001, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, ColecoVision, Fairchild Channel F, Intellivision, Odyssey, Odyssey2, and Vectrex, among seven others. Organized alphabetically by console brand, each chapter includes a history and description of the game system, followed by a complete listing of video games released for that console. Each video game entry includes publisher/developer information and the release year, along with a substantive description and, frequently, the author's critique. A glossary provides a helpful guide to the classic video game genres and terms referenced throughout the work. An appendix lists a number of “homebrew” titles that have been created by fans and amateur programmers and are available for download or purchase.

While this is obviously an attempt to sell something. There are no links, and the item being "pimped" is a video game related book.

Maybe the Author will decide to check back in on the forums and be kind enough to talk more about his book.

I read on another forum that he may send out a few review copies to those who may be in a position to spread the word. I think RFGen would certainly qualify as one of those types of sites. Few websites cover older systems and have community discussions of that nature as often as we do.

And If I may suggest, offer a chapter or a couple of pages for preview everywhere you go if not at the McFarland site itself. I realize there are expenses to be met but you can't expect people to blindly pay that much for a book without at least a preview.

$55.00 may seem like a lot for a book, but it is the first and only book of its type. Every game for every system of the pre-NES era (no matter how obscure) has an encyclopedia-type entry describing gameplay and other relevant information about that game. Most of the entries include review-type material as well, such as how good are the graphics, how fun is the game, etc. 16 different systems are covered in all, with hundreds of game entries. The book covers all the releases for all the classic systems no matter when those games were released, meaning those 2600 games produced in the late '80s and early '90s are included. Most entries are between 30-100 words or so in length.

There's not really a story in the book, it's more of a reference volume, but the entries are fun to read, contain tons of video game history, and are very informative.

Once the book is out, I'll check with the publisher and see if it's okay to post a couple of entries.
