We all know that the Australian PS3 was crippled as far as backwards compatibility goes, and then marked up grossly (this is not a currency difference issue as I can get a US one for cheaper including shipping).

But still, they keep advertising it everywhere as "compatible with most PS1&PS2 games"!
Their false advertisement of their Playstation line has long been one of the things that has fulled my hatred of them most for so many years but seriously..... isn't it time they just stop it?

Uhhhh..."The list shows that 1,782 PlayStation 2 and over 1,000 original Playstation games will be playable on the PAL PS3 at launch (though some have minor to major issues), accounting for about 72% of all PS2 games released in Europe"

I'd say that's most, wouldn't you?

And exactly how else has Sony falsely advertised Playstation in the past? Please "enlighten" me, because I can't think of anything.

I've still got dozens of Xbox games I wish they'd get off their god damned asses and make backwards compatible on the 360. I'm talking obvious ones like D&D Heroes, Morrowind, Mechassault, both Project Gothams, Colin McRae 2005 & 3, Rallisport 2, Obi-wan etc etc.

I can appreciate how hard it is to please everyone and that it is pretty much impossible to achieve 100% satisfaction but a greater effort should be made by both Sony and Microsoft. Of that 28% of PS2/PS1 and 60% of Xbox there are a lot of Triple A titles there being forgotten.

I haven't viewed first hand but i have been told by PS3 users and PS3 haters that PSX/2 games look like shit on PS3 anyways.

I obviously heard this from those who hate the PS3 first.

Any of the people on the site who own a PS3 confirm this?

Is their anyone on the site who owns a PS3?Huh

While, by those numbers, 'most' does constitute a simple majority, there is still great disparity when compared to the support recieved here in America.  The difference is attributed to their choice to use software emulation for most titles instead of using hardware components like the PS2 in the past.  Either way, 72% falls way short of the over 95% we enjoy over here.  We could slam on the 360's poorer record of b/c support; however, by paging though the Xbox website I could only find

"Play hundreds of original Xbox games"

as a feature.  While dissappointing, it is the truth.  Even then there are some emulation issues and they do proceed to list all issues on a game to game basis.  For the AU PS3 page, a quick peek yielded...

"you can play PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 software titles as well as your DVD and CD collection on PLAYSTATION®3"

in a FAQ.  The Product Details section continues on about all the technical specifications of the machine.     Another look at the their other specifications page shows no mention of backwards support.

now, I have no experience with the issue, but check this video out.  It shows the degraded graphic quality Izret101 mentioned.

I use my Xbox to play Xbox games, and my 360 to play 360 games.

'nuff said.

accounting for about 72% of all PS2 games released in Europe"
This wold mean Atomic Magazine had lied when stating only about 6% of all PS1&PS2 games are compatible with the PAL PS3. I mean a 66% difference is a huge difference. Don't suppose anyone else can shed some more light on this? Any one actually own a PAL PS3 and a lot of titles to put things into some kind of a prospective?

And exactly how else has Sony falsely advertised Playstation in the past? Please "enlighten" me, because I can't think of anything.
False system specs, claiming the PS & then PS2 were cable of a lot more than they actually could do once they did come out.
Also lying about competition specs, 1st stating the Saturn was incapable of 3D. Then later  downplaying the Saturn claiming a launch title like Daytona USA was already using the maximum number of Polygons the Saturn could produce so it was as good as the system could ever be. This really stuck with the public, and a lot of people still believed the Saturn was only a 2D system that struggled with 3D.
The more recent one was that there were meant to be two different versions of the PS3, the expensive full feature one, and a bare bones one just like with the 360 but would be just a slightly higher price than the full featured 360. Launch time comes, the cheaper, and more reasonably priced PS3 is non existent.

Non PS related but then you also had them claim that they weren't responsible for their exploding laptop batteries, it was Dell's fault. That was until other companies experience the same problem, then Sony quietly accepted responsibility.... kind of they then blamed laptop batteries, and how they store power but did a huge scale recall on their batteries.

Australia prices:
Playstation 3 = $999.95
Xbox 360 = $649.95  ($499.95 bare bones version)
Wii = $399.95
