Just kind of curious. Lots of options, I included Tactics because some people claim it is the greatest game ever. Anyway, my favorite Final Fantasy is 4 (2 in America). The game was awe-inspiring. I can't seem to put my finger on it. The fact that Cecil kills like thousands of innocent people and then becomes a good guy is fairly awesome, and Kane is easily the most badass Final Fantasy character. The only downfall was the bad plot twist towards the end.

I've got to go with 6. Huge cast of memorable characters, cool attacks, a great storyline, and unique enemies help to make it the best.
I loved the little touches, fom the opera house, to the auction house, to the fighting game style blitz techniques. I used to absolutely love RPGs, and this and Chrono Trigger take the cake as the best of all time in my book.
[Edit] - But I must admit that FFT did indeed kick much ass!

7 was the first one I ever played, so that one immediately got my vote, but I think all of the PS and PS2 ones are terrific. I still have yet to fully explore the earlier ones (I'm working on 3 for DS right now).
EDIT: btw post 100 w00t!

FF Tactics wins my vote. This is one of the better strategy games I have played, and the story is pretty deep with surprising twists. Having heard that FF XII is also set in Ivalice, I'm really looking forward to picking that one up sometime.

Gotta go with VII. It's the reason I switched from Nintendo to Playstation, and resulted in the complete loss of the summer between 9th and 10th grade.
The materia system was simple and brilliant, the Weapon battles were epic and the soundtrack was enthralling. My only beef with the game was the sub-par ending which, if I remember correctly, was all about fantastic CG and not so much about closure with the characters. They've remedied that a bit lately with the release of 'Advent Children' but it was still annoying at the time.

My favorite final fantasy would be sharing a weekend of carnal lust with Charlize Theron and Scarlet Johannsen. I would then die a happy man.

4 is easily my favorite.

I'd have to go with 6 also. The opera house and all of that was the shiznit. Plus you can build your dudes up with different effects.

I've played all but 3 and 11 but went with 6. Everything after 7 (including) got more over dramatic and annyong to me. I've got 12 but was so bored with it I just gave up. So much to do yet none of it feels that rewarding. The story looks nice and all the extra stuff you can do looks nice but there's so much to do just to get the whole picture that even with a strategy guide it's overwhelming.

I put in probably 40 hours of FFXII over the course of about a month, and haven't played a second of it since. I never really knew why, but what you said really makes sense. It is a HUGE game, and even after the time I had put in there was seemingly an infinite number of things that still needed to be done. If I was still 16 with nothing else to do this would be great, but as a 25 year old I just don't have time for a 200 hour game.
